OT Puppy Mill

So, my wife and I are shopping for a new puppy. We both want an English Bulldog. We found a breeder locally, and went to pick our puppy. I have never seen a more disgusting sight in my life. There were hundreds of dogs, all breeds, and dog crap everywhere. The smell . . . ug. We did not buy a puppy.

I just wonder what, if anything, I can do. This woman is allegedly selling AKC pups, so I wonder what the AKC would say about her little project.

Thoughts?

Kung, I have three English Bulldogs. I've recently bought one from a breeder in Kentucky that i'm really happy with. Thats all they breed and there prices are pretty good. beautiful dogs.

I found somebody over by Dayton who looks good, and a lady in Malta who has beautiful dogs but I cannot figure out how she runs her operation. I just don't know anything about her deal, no website, etc. Just an ad, but the dogs are coooooool looking. I am afraid of another puppy mill, there

I will tag along with this one. If we can find an English Bulldog for a reasonable price we are going to go that route. If you don't mind, could you pm or post the information to the one particular breeder you went to visit.

I have a mastiff that I bought and found the parents in cages at a mill. I would not give up my dog. As far as I am concerned anyone can get AKC papers. I showed AKC the picks of the dog they dont give a hoot. Only thing I am upset about is the price I paid but I can and have gotten over that. My two dogs are well pampered.

Shady Acres in Athens is the puppy mill. Avoid.

I am looking at a few others. I'll let you know.

If Shady Acres is selling AKC dogs, AKC will want to know about these conditions. The last time I had a run in with a AKC breeder and having false papers, they got involved. If you contacted them, they will make a visit to the site and will check thebreeder out.The local Humane Seciety will want to know and the ASPCA will REALLY want to know. One of these will get something done and DONT let this go...let somebody know,do it for the dogs.

Hey, if you are looking at an English, check out the mini bulldogs...I almost bought one but they ended up being a bit to pricey (and my wife hates how they look...I know, she's crazy, lol). I bought a papillon (wasn't a fan at first, but he's grown on me) from an Amish "mill" south of Cleveland but he's been the best dog. He had a bit of kennel cough and the runs initially, but the vet cleared him (our choice of vet, not the breeder). They had 3 other dog breeds there, seemed like it was pretty clean...there was an odor, but nothing like the horror stories you hear about...I would have gone with a reputable breeder, but none would sell to me because I had kids.

Call channel 10 they will do a big story on it and then the place wont get any business.

Side note...papillions are awesome dogs I have had one for 8 years and love it.

My 2 cents: check out the pounds.. dogs that will die if no one takes them home. We got an adorable little pup that we now love..

I agree with Miami on this one. So many people get dogs because they look "cool" or are the "in thing" at the time but never really research the breed, there needs or there personality. There are so many problems with pure breds now days and you never know if you're getting one from a reputable dealer no matter how reputable they may seem. You can't go wrong at the pound, it's almost as if the dog knows you saved them and are eternally grateful for it! Not necessarily saying this is the case for you Kung, but English Bull Dogs are notorious for having problems so I hope you have done your research.

I have done my research, thanks.

That, and I worked at a pound long enough to know that a great may dogs there are permanently damaged due to neglect and too much time spent in a cage. A dog from the pound is a real gamble, in that you don't know what that dog had been through, whether it was abused, whether it hates kids, wets when it hears thunder, is afraid of a vacuum cleaner, etc. Puppies offer a cleaner slate. Fewer surprises when you research the breed and know a dogs history.

For some people, a rescue dog is the way to go. For me, at this time, I prefer not to roll the dice.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread.

Papillon .. (see avatar) .. I did not think anyone knew what they were and never expected anyone on the board to own one.

Being a small breeder I really despise puppy mills. Dogs need to be socialized and some of these POS breeders never let their dogs out of a cage. I have seen dogs that can barley walk on solid ground because they have always been on wire. Once the dog exceeds its breeding usefulness they are kicked to the curb like trash ....

Sorry to hi-jack, rant off.
