OT - RC Airplanes

Well guys. I decided to do a quick flight in my back yard with my 700E and was practicing piro flips (doing a flip while the heli is pirouetting) and I got disoriented. I hit upside down with the blades at full speed. Made a very loud boom :blown: and 3 nice divots in the ground. I haven't crashed one that hard in a long time. A lot of damage and broke the most expensive parts it seems. At first I was going to wait a while to get parts because I really don't need to be spending the money on that right now but I broke down and ordered them. I hope to be back in commission by next weekend but it depends on how quick the parts get here and how much time I have.

Dang dude, sorry to hear. That was a nice heli ... hope you get it back up and going soon :spin1: I don't know how you even start to keep things straight with the maneuvers you were doing!

Ouch, Mike! That sucks!

That's definitely one thing I don't like about the helicopters... you almost always break parts when you crash. :)

I'm considering getting the Phoenix sim... in fact, I probably will... if nothing else, it has a Mini Titan model in it and the multiplayer feature is pretty cool... people are offering online flying lessons... :) Its really neat.

I have parts on the way already. I ordered from a place in Hong Kong since some of the parts haven't made it into the US stores yet. And of course they were cheaper. :) They were in New York this morning so hopefully I will have it back together for this weekend.

The Phoenix sim is really nice for the price. If you get one we can fly online. Also they don't charge you for new planes and helis like realflight does.

Very cool. I try to buy online whenever I can - cheaper, less tax, don't have to drive anywhere, and don't have to deal with people. More variety too.

I'm going to tory and get out to the field this Saturday. Hopefully you have it back together by then :wavehand:

For me ordering is almost the only option. The nearest place that has any kind of selection of helicopter parts is in Cookeville. That is about 2 hours from me. Also that heli is so new that some of the parts haven't made it into the US yet.

Got the parts yesterday and have it mostly fixed. It should be ready to fly tomorrow unless I find something wrong I didn't see at first. One note though Zach, tomorrow they are having a fun fly so you have to pay $20 to fly. I think they provide lunch though. I will probably be there pretty early if I can get off my butt and get my heli done. :)

Very cool dude. That was a fast turnaround

$20 to fly though is kind of bogus. I'd bring my own lunch. I just paid my dues and don't really intend to pay more to fly for one day, so that sucks. I'm not quite experienced enough to fly during a fun fly, though. I'll get more practice in soon :hammer:

I went out tonight and tweaked the engine on mine a little more. It just didn't seem powerful last time and after playing with the servo end points and fuel mix it was pretty dang good. Was able to get a nice flight in and successful landing (that plane likes to stay in the air, it's scared of the ground I think) so that's probably the extent of my flying this weekend, as I fly out on Sunday to TX for work.

I got it done and got a quick test flight before dark. I took it easy but it seems like it is flying about the same as before the crash. I got a cool new canopy for it as well.

From what I have heard the funfly won't be much more busy than a normal day a the field. Most of what they have heard from other clubs in the area was that nobody was coming because of the economy. I hear you about paying to fly but I wouldn't let inexperience stop you.

Awesome! I'll see about getting out there tomorrow. They had a longer fence put up tonight. It would be cool if there was a larger turnout ... but we're some of the lucky ones sticking it through the economy... then again, if you are able to spend money on R/C aircraft I would think a simple fun fly wouldn't be a big deal to attend.

It'll be cool to see your "new and improved" chopper :smokin:

Exactly.

They had a big heli funfly a few years ago and it had a great turnout. Lots of people came from hundreds of miles away. They did it the next year and it happened to be on the same weekend as a huge heli fly in in Louisiana and the turnout was pretty small. They just decided to not do it again because of the poor turnout. If they would have had it on a different weekend I think it would have been a success.

I'm a Heliguy myself. Relativly new to it though.

I've been flying at the Edwin Warner park during the week when I can get away for a long lunch.

I've got a Trex 450 I've been flying, and getting better with. No Crazy stunts yet, but having fun with it regardless.

Picked up another plane today. Laser 200, it's a few years old but it's only been flown a few times - not a ding or scratch on it. Going to drop a DLE 30cc gas in there, so I have to rearrange the fuse a little bit to accommodate the rear carb and ignition system (fuel tank needs moved back, will be doing dual battery packs, etc.) But overall this is a very pretty and impressive plane.

Hopefully I can get out to the field this weekend too :)

Nice! I am pretty sure I'm going out tomorrow. I had to get another motor since mine was slightly damaged in the crash and eventually threw a magnet. I put a Scorpion in last night and it has even more power than the stock one.

Awesome! If your chopper has even more power, it should be even more awesome to watch:dance:

I'm going to try and get out there tomorrow. I need to tweak my engine a bit, the idle mix is too rich and I can't get it to idle stable enough, and it's a bit hard to land as a result - comes in a bit too fast.

Btw. Do you still want to look at the engine? I see you already got a gasser so you probably don't but I can bring it along if you do.

I flew Saturday at the Smyrna high school. There is a group of guys out there that fly helicopters at their sports field. Several of them are quite a bit more advanced than I am and I think I learned a lot from them. They all had nitro helis and smaller electric helis. They were really impressed with the power of mine and at least one of them is serious about getting one like it.

They invited me to come to a small funfly at Middle Point (Murfreesboro) on Sunday. I went for a while and had a great time there as well. I flew a couple of times and even did an inverted blade scrape on the runway. It was cool to get cheers from people who obviously flew better than I did.
