Our 40g Island waterfall

Your tank is awesome. I've seen a similar setup with a waterfall out of the water in different reptile/frog tanks/ but this is the first one I've seen for saltwater. It's just great. For the record, that crab 3 pics up looks vicious.

Hey guys :)

Update time it's def been a while and the tank has seen some changes we decided beginning of summer to go full zoanthid and mushroom dominant with some cloves mixed in so we sold or traded off most our lps and sps and added a bunch more zoas and shrooms :)

We had to shut the waterfall off on the left side it developed a pin hole size leak where the saltwater ate through the mortar and soaked into the foam I chased the leak for a while but eventually said I'll shut it off and fix it later so it's been dry all summer but our island is still running it's rivers and pools :)

Tank seen its summer lazys like all but last week I spent some time fixing it up so we took a little video now that summer is winding down we will update more often and get better pics as well I still have many more zoanthids and shrooms to add but I'm doing it slowly polyp by polyp lol

Enjoy a quick video I took yesterday on my phone :)

thanks everyone im glad you all like it:)

the crab is a porcelain crab or anemone crab ....harmless but lots of personality:)

more pics soon!!

Amazing tank!

thnx GT , this tank has been alot of fun and we will see what its like in another year with growth but so far we love it and the design is working great and seems to be a hit everywhere :) who knows maybe we will see more people thinking outside the box :)

thanks guys!!

Astonished!

Great looking and unique tank :)

thanks guys we will try to get a new video and some more epics up soon:) maybe ill do a little more info on whats below the tank as some have asked :)

we are going to be moving soon and are going to use that time to remove the waterfall on the left for now i will cap the line as we design something else in its place:)

if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask away:)

cheers:)

Looking at your coral growth...I'd say we all need to add a waterfall!

Well done!

thanks , yeah the stuff at the very top where rock meets water has literally blown out of control loving the light lol real estate is so slim between some they have started just breaking the waters surface and a few actually slightly stick out of the water and seem to be doing just fine lol

i don't show it often (probably ever?) in the pictures but a long time ago we stuck some pieces of egg crate say about 4"w x 6"h and glued them to the back wall of the tank and then glued some pink n gold palys and red mushrooms to them , they are now pretty much filled the eggcrates and fully covered and growing off in each direction in another year it will be cool to see the whole panel filled:)

cheers:)

time for an update i guess, we moved back in October and sadly the move did not fair to well we lost some fish as well as some corals but wasn't a total write off , since the move we haven't added anything just kind of been letting it heal as of now everything's healed up or at least what made it through the move but the tank needs a good cleaning and im currently battling a bad aiptasia outbreak in the display and am planning to add a small army or peppermint shrimp to deal with that , tanks not really picture worthy until the nems are gone but we have been working on our stand covering and will post some progress pics of that here today:)

ok so its been almost 2 years and we never did finish the stand its self , up until this point its just ben 2x4 and 2x6 painted black but we always wanted to do something different with it :)

keeping with the theme of staying out of the norm we came up with an idea to make this "stand" out lol

the idea is to finish the stands front and both side with white and cut a black centerpiece for the front , what we decided on is 1/2" white marble for the back ground and 1/2" gloss black granite for the centerpiece

we decided to keep with an ocean theme and the design were going with out of the granite is a black octopuss :)

enjoy some pics as we go ill post more:)

this is what me and ruth drew out for a rough template and for a starting design

once we came up with an idea and drew it out we had to cut the template out this part was the wifeys job and she did an awesome job of cutting it all out:)

we laid out a few pieces of granite and then laid out the octopus template that was cut out

then we traced it all out with silver and removed the template , added a little piece of white marble to showcase what's going behind

at this point now were pretty much ready for cutting , gonna have to attack this from a few weird angles but by separating it into more manageable pieces its possible with some time and patience

from this :

to this

once its all done we will smooth out all the edges and clean each piece up likely just before assembly

takes a while to cut but rinse and repeat until all pieces are cut

once we had it all cut out we laid out some marble to see how it looked and to start tracing a design down using the granite this will make cutting all the marble easier with less trial and error

and fit it all together and we can start to see where this is going
