2nd day in tank. We have witnessed Dharma bite Greg on his underside a couple times. I have since read that is normal dominance, submissiveness behavior. Also the hugging the sand during hte day and hugging the surface at night is normal? Day and night 2 they stopped doing that.

When I first added my pair in my tank, they seemed to be swimming toward the top of the tank corner after lights out. Later, when I added a GBTA for them, it took them about 3-4 wks b4 they started to host, now they never leave... LOL

Greg doesn't look very well. I would put them both in a QT as soon as possible and consider freshwater and formalin dips.

Brook is a possibility and if either have stringy white poop that's a symptom of internal parasites.

Phil,

What do you notice to be wrong with Greg? The fin damage, which is healing already today, is from Dharma taking a chomp out of him. What else do you notice about him. I haven't seen them poop really. What should it look like? They are the first fish in our tank. Our first fish period. We are new at this so any insight is appreciated.

We picked this pair up at one of our LFSs. Of course it is not that local, 60 miles or so. Aquairum Gallery in Hudson NH

I am not Phil, but your smaller clown does not look well. Percula whould have his fins fully extended almost all the time. Your fish dorsal and pelvic fins are fully close which is an indication of him not doing well. Check and make sure he does not look like this most of the time. If he does, you need to get him out and treat him.

In that pic he was kind of lunging foward. Almost all the time his fins are sticking up and/or out. I honestly don't know which fins are the dorsal and pelvic but all fins are extended except the on that has a bite taken out of it. But even it is healing and sticking out.

Dorsal = Back the top fin
Caudal = Tail fin
Anal = behind the anus bottom next to the tail fin
Pelvic = fin pair on the bottom mainly use to stear
Pectoralis = two side fins

they look fine to me, ive had a few small males get that way but only because the female bites them over and over, it'll heal up in a couple weeks if they get paired up, if she continues to bite him, she don't like him so that means he's gotta go in the fuge... continue to feed them regularly and watch for white clowdy film around the entire body@@@ my 2 cents

well it mean brook, and that crap is deadly to the max, and will infect other clowns in your system if not taken care of quickly by quartine... darn hate trying to spell that word, but you know what i mean!!!

Greg is doing his hugging the surface dance again, this his 3rd night. Dharma is staying just above the sand. Both in the front left corner. New tank no where to host I had read, not sick. Correct?

Hi ScubaD, when he is "hugging the surface" is he on his side? Mine did that twice and both times after a water change (done right before nighttime). It may have something to do with the pH levels changing. Both times I have put in an air bubbler and my little guy would swim away from the surface and do his bob. I have no good scientific explanation why this "worked" but my little guy is still alive today and eating like a pig!

What you suggest implies that he is at the surface because of a lack of sufficient dissolved oxygen in the water. Oxygen levels do drop in the dark as Algea is not photsyntesizing. Putting an air bubbler in would increase dissolved oxygen. I am testing for dissolved oxygen right now. Does newly mixed saltwater have a low dissolved oxygen level. That could explain what you describe as well, if in fact a low level of dissolved oxygen is the issue.

Hi scubaD;

I live in boston too but never been to this Aquarium Gallery in Huson NH. I never know this place until you mentioned it.
If you don't mind me asking,
Are there still any pretty Onyx clowns like your left?
How much for one of them?

I have been looking for a pair of true perc for awhile now but non of them looks as good as your. I wouldn't mind driving up there and pick up a pair this weekend, if there are still some left.

They had the pair I got for 2 months. I didn't see any others there. They did have a pair of picasso clowns. Also a pair of juvenile black ocellaris clowns. We had taken the NH LFS tour prior to buying these two. Seaworld and Aqua Addicts in Salem and then Aquarium Gallery in Hudson. That was our last stop as we found what we were looking for, even though we didn't know in advance what we were looking for.

ScubaD- Nice pair, I nearly picked that pair up myself, but I already am overstocked with clowns Although I wouldn't recommend skipping QT for any clownfish, they were alert and healthy when I looked at them.


The aquarium gallery was voted the best reef store within two hours of Boston by the Boston reefers, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment for such a new store. Worth a drive for anyone in the area. They also have been very supportive of the club and of educating their customers.
