Our tank's biology up close

Very cool. Is that cyano growing out of green algae?

Sample three was mostly green stuff.

Samples 1 and 2 are the black stuff... the real mystery organisms.

This is what I believe to be a type of cyano but haven't seen it in my system. A lot more of it in the other samples.

Sometimes the pictures look out of focus but if you look around you'll see what I was focusing on. :)
In this case it was the spirochete bacteria. They are pretty cool.

Here's the thick mass taken from the bag. Lots of cyano mixed with algae

Can we have a little webinar where you go through what's what?

So much visual input - so little knowledge in my tiny head to know what I'm looking at.

It's beautiful

:D

Video on flikr for now and will get up to youtube later. Click on the picture of link to see the video.

There is one more video but looks like it failed to upload. I'll work on that once the black mat pictures and videos are up.

It would be wrapping around it. I want to come back to those samples when I can but wont be for a couple weeks most likely.

Do you have any red algae like gracilaria

wait wait.. samples 1 and 2 are the black stuff.. sample 3 was mostly green hair
please do a sample 1... just some of it. I don't think it'll last a couple of weeks alive

here's where the black mat hair in the tank

Oh, I did those too. Still trying to get Sample 1 black mat uploaded. The overflow is uploaded and going to get those posted here soon.

I just can't believe that that black hair that tenaciously stands up to the water flow is actually bacteria... and why black?

it only grows as a mat by physically spreading on rock - so rocks that are close can get infected, but those on the opposite side of the tank don't have any.

it also comes off clean from the rock (no roots inside the rock) - come out in a solid section if I'm careful... not bacteria-like at all.

More like a fungus ...
