This build looks great. What are your plans for doing maintenance on such a deep tank? It seems like even the smallest thing (retrieving a fallen frag, etc.) will be more of a challenge. But I guess you're up to it. Good luck and I'm following along.
the question is FOWLER or Reef and if you go FOWLR or Reef your gonna have a hard time with some fish since its only 2ft wide. great tank btw, i cant wait for it to be done.
Well I have never had to clean the check valves on the old tank. I would of liked to have shut off valves on each return but I couldnt fit them under the stand, and the stand really couldnt be much higher due to the height of the tank and the center of gravity. I figured If I need to clean them or replace I will put a 4 foot piece of pipe in the tank and screw it onto the piece of pipe coming out of the bulkhead. Then I only have to worry about the little bit of water in the pipe. I would Like to add Just Fish only tank for sure! Sorry Reefers.
Was that a zx 14 in one of those pics? I know that was not an accident haha!! Do you have an equipment list? You stand looks pretty solid! I just made one out of 1 1/2 square steel and Im going to get it powder coated on monday.
Using the electric sander did not give you any issues on buffing the scratches out of the acrylic? I am currently sanding mine but decided to do it all by hand for fear that the DA or a jitterbug sander might bite too hard and/or make waves. It sure would be faster and easier on the arm to use one of those.
No Issues I would Just say to use a electrric sander that u can strap on your own sandpaper. I wouldnt use anything lower than 1500 and just move up to 2000 or 2500. Use the hose with spray nozzle to clean off the residue to see where your working. Just be gentle not alot of force and just finish with a nice light hand sand. The buffing is where people will have the most trouble . U need to have a spinning buffer with foam pad. You have to balance pressure and slow to medium speed rotation to Buff clear but not to scratch with the wheel. Keep everything real clean the tank the most. Remember when the water is in it it will also hide alot. I didnt do a final buff on mine yet but when I filled it with water it looked clear as could be.
Thanks Nyvp I have been reading some of your post since I first joined RC.
Poriferan. The only waves I got was where I got some DEEP gouges out by using the edge of the sander and after all the final sanding they didnt turn out that noticeable.I even rounded one edge complete because of a chip. If i was going to not have a canopy I would of done them all for a sleek look.
IF ANYONE NEEDS ANY UPCLOSE OR CERTAIN ANGLE SHOTS LET ME KNOW. I WOULD CONSIDER MY SELF A ROOKIE WOOD WORKER. BUT ALL THE PICS ON HERE REALLY HELPED ME OUT.
Thanks for the tip. I agree witht the water hiding most of them. I could see almost nothing with the water. I just wonder how much more will show with the lights and if any algae gets in there cleaning it out would be much more difficult.

Dude go buy a sander and strap on some 1500 and go to town. I though I was going to hand sand and realized it was two much real quick. I checked on your post those scratches arent that bad compared to some in my tank. U will be happy u did . Especially when It looks like a brand new tank.
seems hard to make it a reef with its depth and width but you couldnt keep that big of fish if its a FO/WLR cuase you need room to turn around. its looking even better tho cant wait for some water.
