owenspackmans 180 Reef upgrade build.

Thanks Wayne!

The 48x24x5 only holds about 30 gallons. Pretty rigid plastic, they're designed to fill and drain with water consistently throughout the day. I have no fear that I'll have a flood from it. Fingers crossed.

Crossing toes and ankles too. Its only 240 lbs of water after its all over with. It probably weighs more with the original idea of dirt and fertilizer.

So these trays aren't traditionally used for fertilizer from what I'm told. I don't know much about Hydroponics, but when In the store I asked. I was told plants are placed in the tray, at regular intervals during the day the sump below will pump the the flood tray full of water and work just like our tanks, the pump then shuts off and the sump fills back up with the water. It allows the plants to get their water and nutrients but not soaked all day long. Hence the term 'flood tray'.

Ahhhhh. Well I know I am going to borrow that idea from you so probably expect it in my update in the future.

SO you can make it a tidal tank??

That's not how I'm running it, it's only about 5" so I can't spare the loss of water. I guess in theory you could.

I need to keep a consistent turnover of water in it as it's plumbed to my system and the heat etc is coming from the sump, if it's not high enough turnover the temperature will lower in the frag tank and any supplements will not each the system.

I visited my local Petco today, this is a rare occurrence. I've never purchased a fish from them, but something drew me to the store today knowing my Quarantine was now empty and knowing Petco's habit of miss-labelling fish.

Well on my fish list currently is a trio of Bartletts Anthias. Low and behold Petco had an Anthias, it was labelled 'Red Anthias' for only $16.99.

Searching google, LiveAquaria and more I saw no 'Red Anthias' that looked anything like this guy. This guy looked like a juvenile Bartletts Anthias, but I don't have enough experience with them to know for sure.

What do you think? Did I get an absolute steal?

when my tank was running I added bartletts when I already had bimac's and lyretails with no problems.

Good to know, well the Dispar seems to have settled in pretty well!

Tomorrow my Aqua Illumination Hydra shows up. I purchased only one so far as i won't have enough frags to fill the tank. Then in a month or two i'll get the 2nd!

What tank are you putting the hydra on?

The frag tank. The frag tank will have the two Hyrdas and the Display the Vegas.

Depending on how i like them I might swap. I wanted to continue with AI as i've already invested in the Director and wanted to be able to keep acclimation mode for corals etc.

Nice, Anthia, those are on my list as well, not sure which though. Loving my Hydras as well, except for the mild dark area about 16 inches up between the tank brace on my 180. i was just staring at it tonight wondering how i could engineer bringing them closer.

The AI Hydra arrived today, so after work I immediately got busy setting it up and moving over corals. Connecting the Hydra to the Director was a breeze and I love the UV and Violet, they make the colors really POP! I most likely will upgrade my Vegas to include these, the Royal really is poor on the Vegas.

Anyway, here are some iPhone photos, I was surprised how well the iPhone captured the corals and the colors under the LED's, that normally doesn't happen for me.

There is a mix of recovery corals and happy frags for grow out within the SPS.

Here is a video tour of the tank, i'm amazed at how well the iPhone filmed it (remember to watch in 1080!!).

So, how are my colors on these guys? I know some of the recovery corals are brown, but i'm pretty pleased with the results i'm seeing from Reef Energy & Reef Colors on the rest. Especially since i'm new to SPS since April.

Anyway, enjoy!
