owenspackmans 180 Reef upgrade build.

I always know when my better half has messed with the air conditioning by studying the apex. If she leaves her hands off, all is well, if she starts freezing the house I can catch her because the heater kicks in waaaay more. I also know when she opens the windows because the PH increases from my usual 8.1 to 8.3.

Yup ... My boys turned on the HEAT Fri.. they were cold.. I called them and asked why it was on.. HUH???? lol... Yeah I know too.

Frag Tank

Frag Tank

So i'm planning an extension. I am going to copy the BulkReefSupply frag tank (Hydroponics Flood Tray/Stand) idea. But I plan the pieces elsewhere to reduce the cost.

I have been selling some of my Zoa's, Xenia, Duncan and Pipe Organ Corals to local reefers for really great prices. I actually had a couple drive 1 1/2 hours to visit my set up and get frags due to the low prices compared to their home town. I love the idea of the hobby helping fund itself via this process, along with testing my skills. I also love the idea of help local reefers and the opportunity of providing my LFS with a little more variety.

I had been considering setting up a separate system in the garage or doing the BRS set up connected to the current tank. I compared the PRO's & CON's. The pros of using my existing system far outweighed the pros of the separate set up in the garage.

I will only be small, 2 x 4 tray. But it will allow me to move my frags racks out of the display, increase my water volume and be a safe place for any injured, recovery corals/fish. I will not be using the sump portion of the BRS setup, instead drains will run with flex tubing, out of the tray, through my wall via flex tubing, into the sump. I will then have flex tubing run from a spare valve from the return pump back through the wall to the frag tank.

My only cost should be the stand, tray, plumbing parts, new jaebo powerhead and lighting. I'm going to search for a good deal on some lighting on craigslist.

Anyway, the stand is ordered, then next the tray.

I'm lucky to have a supporting Fiancé.

awesome updates. hope those corals pull thru. would be a def great addition. love when other hobbyist look out for one another with some great deals.

Owen that looks great!!!!! that set up just might be what I need to tie me over until my new tank is running!

Sweet. Spouse support does make the hobby that much greater.

It certainly does! Although with the recent sump leak and a issue with my RO/DI springing a leak, she has expressed that she wouldn't be upset if i got rid of the tank and started putting money back into my car! ha ha.

Thank you Matt! I ended up losing the Porites coral, but the others are doing well, the Birdsnest seems to be on the mend. I will take some photos of their progress in a week or so.

Looks like a plan Owen!Glad for you!When will u start shipping overseas?:crazy1:
Ha ha, it's unlikely I will ever start shipping other than to some friends!

How are you curing that itch? Feb/March is still a long way away and ReefCentral can only go so far for a cure. Maybe this is an option? ;) At least to get a head start on some frags!

The stand arrived today, built and assembled, much larger than I had anticipated. Yikes, doesn't leave much room around the tank! I'll have the tray next week, I'm taking back the black one I got as it doesn't fit correctly.

Ordered plumbing supplies and another Jaebo WP40. That'll go into my display and I'll movie a tunze into the frag tank as I think the Jaebo would be way too powerful for the shallow tank.

Only big purchase is going to be lighting.....I had thought about finding a used T5 or MH setup, but I think I'm going to continue with Aqua Illumination. I love my Vegas & now I have the Director for complete control I figure I'll look for some used Sols or get the new Hydra's.

I'll post photos of the stand soon.

I have had a small battle with hair algae since the Moorish Idol has been in the display. The the time my weekly water change arrived, I would see clumps in certain areas, i'd remove it, do my water change and by the following week it was appearing in other places.

I wanted to get a handle on it before it became a bad outbreak. I replaced the first two filters in my R/O, even though i tested 0 phosphates. I removed the carbon from my dual reactor and placed GFO in both compartments, put carbon in a bag in the sump. I reduced feedings, stopped dosing Reef Energy and Reef Colors as overdosing in all of the above can lead to algae outbreaks.

I completed a water change on Friday with the help of my better half and we slowly/methodically scrubbed and syphoned any hair algae we could find. I reduced my light cycle and intensity over the past 3 days and will slowly increase over the next 5.

My aim was the starve the hair algae in the display.

Today i decided to add an ATF. I have two spare outlets on my manifold and decided to use one for this, it was already perfectly positioned and the work to build took about 30 minutes along with $5 in cost. I just need to add another lamp to the backside.

Let's see if it works!!

Mine (an acrylic enclosed version) DOES work wonders.

See the last few video's I took? It shows the changing of the ATS and how much it had grown in 1 week.

The ATS is a good idea. It helped keep nuisance algae out of my 50g. I think I'm going to retrofit it for the new build.

RO unit is my greatest concern for leaks and floods. I hate those connectors. I don't like leaving it connected so it can auto top off my reservoir. I think I'm going to buy all John Guest fittings for it. I did buy a valve with an alarm that has a floor sensor. It will shut off the supply to the RO if it senses water on the floor. Haven't had the chance to hook it up and test it yet, but hopefully it works as advertised. Better yet, hopefully it never has to be tested LOL

I need to go and take a look at them now. I saw the skimmer video not the ATS (ATF). How long did it take you to start to grow algae, 7 days plus?

Yes the RO fitting that came with my unit was dreadful. Now we have a fitting from BRS but its never run now while we are out of the house. I actually blame it on the cat"¦..that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

I do like the idea of shutting off the R/O if water is detected. I still need to invest in the sensors for my apex, i have the main unit, just no sensors yet.
