Oxymonacanthus longirostris - a week in review.

For sure. I just hope he'll put some weight on soon. He's starting to develop a tiny little belly after meals so I'm staying hopeful. The water smells like seafood so I'm going to be changing it in a little bit here. Not too sure if he's picking at the slimer frags or not, I haven't witnessed it anyway.

Awesome! Mine hasn't really touched the pellets or flake too much now, but he's starting to eat mysis and brine! He's starting to put on a little belly. This morning I saw something that either looked like a piece of shrimp stuck to him or stringy poo. Hopefully it was just the shrimp but idk

Some update pics of his belly getting bigger. Not the best quality, I had to zoom in as he runs away now from the camera.

I hope so:celeb3: I'm not sure if he's snacking on leftovers in the tank after morning feedings or if the two frags of sps are keeping him fat because he had that belly when I came home tonight. He only ate a few pieces of mysis so I'm just not sure if that's all he needs because he's so small or another reason. Hopefully he is healthy.

I bought a millepora yesterday and he loves it, however he hasn't touched the mysis anymore. He likes the millepora over the slimer so maybe this leads to some insight on what kind of acros some of these fish like to eat? Maybe they're region specific or everyone is just different. I'd like to find out.

I can't seem to get anyone to help me elsewhere so maybe someone here can. I'm not sure what kind of flow I need to sustain an sps set up in my 12g. If I did this, do you think the acros will survive the pecking of the fish in the long run?

when you say "12 gal" are you referring to a NC12? i know your fish is a juvie, but i honestly don't think you'll be able to keep enuff SPS alive in that small of a setup to sustain the fish (i thought your fish was weaned, BTW). or are you asking for aquascaping reasons? unless you have a chiller, i think you'll REALLY be fighting temp issues if you run MH for the coral.

as far as the fish picking on the coral, one school of thought is that these fish don't actually feed on the coral polyps, but the mucous layer on the coral, with the polyps getting eaten along with the mucous. i read that someplace, but don't recall where. that being said, coral flesh has indeed been found in the stomach contents of dissected specimens.

our pair actively hunts pods in the little stands of hair algae that have popped up and we have left them for that reason. our fish have REALLY taken to pellets in the last month or so.

HTH

He is weened, but I think it helps when I'm not home to keep him eating then take the mysis when I get home and before I leave in the mornings. I still plan on putting him in the 65 when he gets big enough, I just feel he'll be out competed for food as slow as he eats. Also I just think it would look nice with a bunch of acros in a 12 jbj nanocube. As far as other foods go he still only takes mysis and the brine if there's no mysis. Hopefully he'll take to liking the other foods again. He's put on a good amount of weight IMO. I've been trying to upload pics but as usual there's a problem with my computer and photobucket. I have the MH on there already and it maintains between 78 and 80, sometimes 76 and 78 if it's cold in the house.

I see him picking at the pods on the glass right where he sleeps. He sleeps in the clippie where I put nori for the snails occasionally, it's funny

i think you're doing a great job. just keep trying alternate foods.

as for flow, what you might consider is repumping the NC12 (if you're running the stock pump, i guarantee you can get a cooler-running pump, such as a MJ or Rio, which should save you a couple of degrees F). you can bump up the flow and maybe split the return and aim it creatively so the coral get the flow, but the fish can stay out of it when he wants.

I'll see what I can do. What would I use to split the return? Is there something sold to do this or does have to be diy? I'll try the nls pellets when I get home tonight. Maybe this time will be different. Thanks for the advice!

you can get a 1/2" lockline "Y" and pop it onto the existing in-tank fitting (after popping off the flare). then you can add you choice of fittings (flares, nozzles, small spray bars, etc.). you can also put lengths of lockline "pipe" onto the "Y" first, so you can aim them more easily. i did this to our NC12 and it works well.

our fish are eating both the NLS as well as Ocean Nutrition "Nano Reef Fish Food" which is also a pellet.

I'm gonna have to venture more into the food sections at my lfs' to see what they have to offer. It's funny, he doesn't go for the pieces of mysis but the whole ones. Sometimes he can eat them, other times he struggles to try lol. At least he's aggresive about it when I put it in the tank. He's slowy getting there to eating normal. I'd like to keep him eating mysis and still have his natural diet of acros which is the reason I'm doing this. It's amazing how many negative responses you can get with asking these questions. I understand why, but some people are just rude about it. Thanks to everyone who knows how to have an actual conversation and not a debate :)

Mine has been doing awesome, taking mysis great and not being as picky with pieces. I'll try and get some decent pics after my camera's charged. He's very plump and evened out. I still think he needs acro only because I can only feed him twice a day, so I believe the acro holds him over until I can feed. Any pics of yours as of now?

I haven't taken any pics in a long time. The harddrive took a nose dive and I lost everything on there. I back up nightly to a remote server but it's a long process to recoup them. I better do it before I move because I'll be downgrading from Fios to the creepy crawly Time Warner. It's going to take me FOREVER to download it over there (160gb). But I can't back up any new pics until the old ones are safely on the puter or it will save over the old ones.... so I haven't taken any pictures at all, believe it or not.

When I move I will get some new ones. I want to put one of the red saddled anthias in there with them.... but I'm skeered!
