I just got a Tang "Dorie" today and i was wondering if there is any kind of special care i needed to do for her... I did feed her and she came out, it has been 6 hours and she just still hides in the corner, i think she might be climatizing, but there is a yellow tail damsel, wich i am not to worried about, but any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!!!

thanks,
Dustin

I'd think 6 hours may not be enough time to determine weather anything is wrong or if she's simply getting used to the new suroundings. My coral beauty stay in every cave he could for about a week. Now I can't get him to get out of my way when viewing the tank.

Not to be harsh, but these questions are really coming at the wrong time. Part of the mission of COMAS is to promote responsible reefkeeping. And that means to research a purchase (thoroughly) BEFORE you make the buy.

Now, maybe you did....and I am off here....and these are just follow up questions. And if that is the case, I sincerely apologize. However, if not, please consider being proactive with these questions before your next purchase.

As for a REAL response, the first question I have is: how big is this tank? If this is the 44gal tank described in your footer, that is staggeringly too small for a Blue Tang. Consider this - that fish has a maximum size of about 12 inches and has a natural habitat in the wild on the order of square MILES. The lowest standard size for a blue tang would be closer to a 100 gallon tank.

Another question, how big is it now? I suppose I can be more understanding if the fish is now small (3 inches?) and you have plans for what to do with him when he outgrows your tank.

And lastly, where did you buy this fish? Who sold him to you? Did the store owner inquire upon the size of your tank?

Again, I apologize for the harshness of my post. However, we have a responsibility to the creatures we keep in our aquariums. Such details described above should not be neglected.

Dustin,

They are very skiddish at the beginning. As it becomes acclimated to its surrounding you will see it out more. That is more of the question you wanted answered not tank size!

Thanks for all of your responses, and yes i did do the research before the buy and the LFS i go to does know my tank size, and i have a little tang, she is only about 2 1/2 inches, i did that on purpose, hehe and dont worry, as soon as i move i will be getting AT LEAST a 100 gal tank, i have done my research on alot of the "critters" i am going to put in this tank. I never do anything without asking tons of questions before i do something that i have little to no experience in.

Thanks again,
Dustin

It's very normal for them to be skittish, especially if it wasn't at the LFS for long before you got it. Most of them here lay flat under a rock after coming out of QT until they get used to people walking by. Even had one last week that wouldn't come out of a PVC piece in the QT tub, so fish & PVC was moved together into the display. Took it another 24 or so to come out.

sounds like a typical heathy tang thats acclimating to his souroundings slowly.he should be fine in that tank for at least a year or longer.like greg said they are really scitish when they are new to the tank.

Just an update, the Tang is doing great, i thank all of you for replying to the message, she still is kinda skiddish around people, but she is doing great!!

Thanks again,
Dustin
