Paul B was right... Ouch!!!

Well, I had a Rio 1700 in my water mixing container overnight and I came out this morning to the most putrid smell ever. Smells like burnt oil and a seized motor.

Luckily it was only about 10 gallons of water I was mixing and a "free" pump I've had for a while, but it was my water change pump.

I now subscribe to the "Rio pumps are a piece of crap" train.

Same thing happened to my tank a while back, I used a Rio2100 as a return for my 75 gal. I got home one day and the sump smelled burnt. I found the Rio was burnt out.

Rio Suck big time..

Well Paul is usually full of $%^ about a lot of things :D... but with Rios, he is right on the money. We had a very expensive collection of fish we saved from a tank tear down awhile back (real nice specimens) and they all died from 2! Rios going out and locking in their temporary holding areas overnight. W/o water movement they all died. I was heartbroken and more ****ed that I was dumb enough to trust them in the first place.

Sorry to hear you had similar luck...

Mike... Luckily it was just a saltwater holding tank and nothing was impacted other than a very small dent in my wallet.

It's funny how somethings can work for some people and be piles of garbage for another group. I've used rio's for years (close to 10) and have never had any problems with them.

It seems that the biggest problem with them is that on occasion the larger models will fail to start after a power outage. Which is the most likely reason for overheating and melting. Heck i have an aquaclear that does the same thing, so i highly doubt it's a rio only problem.

Mike is not one who should ever say anyone else is full of anything. I actually warned him and said Rio's fail for no aparent reason VERY often. He learned the hard way...( we lost like 300 dollars worth of fish) I am sure there are lots of pumpsthat fail but IMO rio's are the king of crap!

you guys have me worried i am using a rio as a return pump for my 40g what pump do you guys recommend?

Mag drives are dependable but they do run a bit hot. I run an eheim and am really happy with it but they are a bit pricy.

For a great orice been very dependable and more effiecient than an eheim, Oh yeah>

Oceanrunner 2500 would work nicely for your set up

Not like anyone had a chance against the Pats anyways. I thought the Colts would give them a tough time but since SD owns the Colts the Pats are probably celebrating. because they got a free pass to the Superbowl!!!

They will destroy SD.

DrF&S has quiet ones on sale right now. Not a super awesome pump, but better than a mag IMHO.

Thanks, Paul, I've got a few PH lying around for water mixing. I'll just need to buy a new waterchange pump.
