PaulytheReefer - Rimless Starfire Build Thread

I have a ball valve on it but its really too much and too loud too.

I'd use a gate valve on the return line, as it will give you a lot better fidelity on controlling flow, but if the pump is loud swapping it out is probably a good idea.

I've been too busy lately to do much with the tank. I did get some sand and LR in it and a couple gallons of water. I'm thinking of going with one of the Ehiem return pumps instead of the "not so Quiet One."

I replaced the eggcrate overflow with a acrylic one that a local reefer friend made for me, I think it looks alot nicer now.

I finished fixing my floor issues thanks to some advise from some knowledgeable RC members. I've added some sand, LR and more water. My plan is to get a new return pump tomorrow, then have the tank running by the end of the weekend.

I returned the loud one 6000 and replaced it with the Eheim 1262, I am much happier with this pump. Much quieter! I have the tank full and the reactor running, I have transfered most of my frag tank corals to it and soon enough I will be putting my colonies in it.

I put some of my corals into the tank and did some aquascaping this weekend. The corals are looking good so I think I will start adding some of my other nicer corals to the tank tomorrow evening.

I will probably have around a hundred lbs of LR in the display. I live on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

I added some of my other corals tonight. I still have to find spots for everything, but I got most of them in there. Thankfully we have a frag swap coming up soon because I have way too many corals to put into this tank. I am thinking about going all the way to he back of the tank with live rock just to add more places to attach corals. I really wanted to go with less LR but it just doesn't seem feasable.

Killer frag tank, pwoller. :D You can never have too many frags right? Looks great. :)

This was supposed to be my one and only tank. I'm kinda sick of keeping up with multiple tanks. But I have a feeling that this tank will end up full of frags.

I made the sump myself, I made a good size area in it to house frags. I want to get rid of some of my corals that aren't all that special and grow out the ones I like the most. Trim them occasionally and grow the frags out in the sump. I am deciding now if I want to use a T5 fixture over the sump or a single halide. Any opinions on which would be better? I'm leaning towards the T5's to reduce heat and electricity consumption.

Reading this thread today is more fun than any other day.

And btw, keeping it in Reef Discussion is actually a better idea. I know you wanted to move it, but build threads make more sense in this forum, especially this particular tank size. My 280g thread has been in this exact forum for 4.5 years.

I feel like I need to add a legend so that it makes more sense when you read it. Christmas tree stands and gnomes for everyone!

Looking good!

Great choice on the tank dimensions.

Thanks! Your tank was the inspiration for this one. I might still go to T5's in the future.

I have moved most of my corals from the frag tank into the new tank. I don't know what is causing it, but I have noticed a huge increase in polyp extension on my SPS. Literally minutes after being put into the new tank they were all dancing around in the current. It could be the Vortech, the calcium reactor or the more intense lighting. If I had to guess I would say it is the current being delivered by the Vortech, so far I am a very satified customer and am considering adding a second one to the mix.
