PaulytheReefer - Rimless Starfire Build Thread

Here is the sump that I built in action. I'm really happy about how it turned out. It cost alot to make, just in glass, but it was a good experience.

Well I added my first fish, a blue throat trigger, so I had to make a top to keep him in. I used netting and a window screen frame. It turned out pretty nice.

I can't see the trigger. Is it in the shot?

No, he's hiding. I cant even get into the room without him shooting into the rocks. I just took a picture of the top.

Nice tank Paul, so did you end up not going the T5 set up for you tank. What made you change your mind. I have the same size tank and iam contemplating going the T5 route.

Honestly, I bought it because a local reefer was selling it for less than half price. I figured I would get it and see how it does. I'm alitte concerned that it will add too much heat to the tank this summer, if so I will probably switch it out with a power module or a sunpower. I really like the fixture though so we'll have to see. To combat the heat I am trying to keep the number of pumps in the tank to a minimium. I have the skimmer, return pump and thats it in the water, the return pump supplies the calcium reactor and will supply the phosphate reactor too. I'm thinking of adding another vortech and leaving it at that for circulation.

I added a Kole's Tang to the tank today. Originally I was going to get a Yellow and maybe an Achilies tang, but this one caught my eye. He's already eating and swimming laps. I am going to try and get some shots of corals and th fish as soon as I figure out how to adjuast the white balance on the camera.

Cool, I see. Yeah heat was my major issue last year as well. That is why I was looking at the ATI fixtures. Will most likely go with the sunpower instead of the PowerModule.

You can't beat the price of the Sunpower.

yeah that is whay iam leaning for. Tank looks great.

So I currently have the blue jaw trigger(3 inches)and a kole tang(4 inches). I want a Achilies Tang, looking for opinions and recommendations, do you think I will be able to add one to this mix?

Awe man. Putting a cover on a rimless tank is like nailing a Dove to the wall by it's wings with rusty old nails.

Its removable. I dont think it would be very responsible to leave it uncovered and expect my fish to stay in it.

I added one recently to my 150, and I'd caution that it's an intimidating fish. It's the only tang I have in the tank (though I do have a sargassum trigger and a foxface), but the amount of swimming and activity this fish creates is amazing. I'm not saying it's a terrible choice, but it's sketchy. You may consider some less active surgeonfish for the 100.

What do you do when you feed the fish? Is this mesh covering easily removable or do you have a section that can lift up for feeding / maintenance? Just curious. Great looking tank. Is this the exact same tank that SunnyX has? Looks similar. Either way, I'm very jealous of both of you guys! :mad2:

I also have a Kole Tang and an Achiles (sp?). I introduced the Achiles last and got him when he was tiny. He was the smallest fish in the tank, by far and everyone has done very well. I also have a Vlamingi too and they all get along quite well. I think you should be fine but you just never know what the personality of the fish wil be when introduced. A Vlamingi may be a good replacement over the Achiles if you like them. Very peaceful and active. Just a thought. Your tank will be beautiful eaither way. My tank is a 150g though - so a bit different.

Kind of two different issues between those fish, soccerbag. The Vlamingi gets huge, breaks 2 feet in the wild, so probably more fish than would be enjoyed in a 100 gallon. The achilles would be the better solution between the two for that reason alone, but indeed it may be a pretty intense fish in a 100 gallon for other reasons. A small one may be entertaining, but just understand that in time it may become rather domineering in your setup.
