peacock diet

I went to the fish market yesterday and picked up some black turban snails (Tegula funebralis)
I gave one to my peacock and he took in in his den but never thru the shell out.
Usually he throws the shell out after he is done eating.
Can a Mantis handel these snails? They seem to have a really hard shell.

That's what we often feed. Any O. scyllarus over 3 inches should be able to handle the size of Tegula sold in fish markets. They cannot break them, however, just before and after a molt.

This morning I found pieces of the snail shell.
How long can these snails survive in 80 degree water?
I have them in my sump right now of my reef tank.

A few days for just a few snails in the tank. We buy the 2-3 pound net bags of snails and keep them at 14 C. It would be a disaster to put them all at 26 C. Wrapped in saltwater soaked paper towel, they will last several days in the fridge.

Hello:

liveaquaria.com has "white shrimp" as one of the feerder foods, they can get upto 9" but they sell them @ 1.5" and they are very cheap, I was thinking of getting some for my peacock.

I was actually thinking of setting up a tank just to have them grow out so I can feed them to my peacock as its normal diet.

they are saltwater animals, so they wont die after a few days in the tank (unlike other freshwater shrimp)

I feed the same thing (I think) to my peacock. They are alive and under ice in the local fish market. I buy a handful for under a dollar. Lately, I have had a hell of a time keeping more than a few of them alive. I take them home and put them in a plastic "kegger" cup...you know, the red party cups...and fill it up with Scripps water.

The first few times that I did it, I got great results. Nearly all of the snails volunteered for duty by climbing to the rim of the cup, at which time I would pluck them off and toss them into "Sushi's" tank. I also have a g smithii in my big reef tank that I hand feed them to.

Anyhow, I will try the wet paper towel trick next time...although they stink like hell and the wife will NOT be happy to find them in the refer!

I left 14 snails in my refuge with no deaths!
They did a great job of cleaning my alage off the glass.
Some would stay in the water and others just above the water the line.
I thought they would die for sure due to 78degree water but none have died.(except by mantis)
Bought them around the first of April and still have two left.
