Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Nice pickups Perry I can definitely see the potential with them! Will be cool to see them color up in your tank.

Thanks Tim! I am hoping so, the yellow milli and spath are going on the rock wherever I can find a spot, lol....

really? that expensive?
okay when i think about corals in the US i allways think of $$$$ :p

non the less nice acros. i´m getting some new one this weekend too, lets wait and see how they look!

Flo

Flo, I saw plenty of nice things, but I found some of the price tags a bit ridiculous, but that's the name game thing, with a good fan base to cheerlead on and support.... Good luck, I hope you find some nice pieces buddy!
Cheers,

Hi Perry. Been a few days with the new dosing now, how are you finding it? I am still having to increase my dose. What about you found the right amount yet?

Michael, Friday I bumped from 90ml to 100ml and had to go to the RAP convention, so I had my fingers crossed, I returned home and tested Sunday night, and got 6.48 on the button. So, I think I am settled there, I have discontinued while I am doing a cyano treatment and blackout. I will resume on Thursday when the lights go back on.
Cheers buddy!

Hey Kevin,
Yes it was cool to check out the event, see all the crazy corals, the new line of equipment, and to meet all the reps. In my early days of reek keeping, a guy named Don Miller(Zeovit TOTQ), sold some corals to me, this was after his tank of the quarter award. The guy was super cool, gave me some free kz bulbs to try out, and hooked me up with a calcium reactor too. I remember how much respect I had for him. This was in 2007, when many said t5's did not work. The euros were proving this theory completely wrong. Soon thereafter, with my next tank, I ran zeovit in 2008-09 on my 70 gallon tank. I followed many zeovit tanks, and always loved that the corals glowed, and knew this was my passion. The names are cool, but I like taking corals and seeing how far I can push the colors, if it is already a pretty coral, great, and I will pay the price for it. I have however seen names being abused as far as corals go. I think the corals will go beyond lineage coloration, especially in bac driven systems, I am witnessing this in my tank running AF, so should I just rename it and sell it for 10times the cost? To me this seems a bit underhanded and is going on more than most think. The person buys it and is all stoked with this coral, only to end up morphing right back to the typical lineage coloration after settling in a non zeovit tank. I also feel lighting has done this too with leds, so kind of a double edge sword. To me, I like the wholesaler, they laugh if you dare ask them the retail or trade name, their like dude, it is an acro, you want it? If you have a keen eye, you can walk out with some scores. The yellow acro with pink polyps, presuming a milli is crazy colorful, and the orange spath has potential too. This is the example of my coral passion. Don't get me wrong though, there are some high ticket items out there that are super stunning, and true, there are also some poorly representing the hobby, just saying :)

Well stated.[/QUOTE]

Thanks Kevin!

Cyano is breaking from the rock, I dosed Chemi Pure Red Cyano treatment, I used this one specifically due to not interrupting the good bacteria in the system. This Thursday I will do a 30 gallon water change with probiotic reef salt. I will also turn the lights back on, this will be around 60 total hours of lights off. Hopefully my skimmer will be able to go back online at that point. This is why I did lights out too, my hopes are to not see an increase in nutrients, due to the fish not being fed during this time. I am running an airstone, and nothing else right now, the carbon and phos minus are temporarily suspended at this time. I have also suspended component 3 dosing, due to lack of uptake, monitoring alk closely as to not have a major downward tick. So far I am confident that this was required to break the cycle, that and I can tell by Thursday that the stuff should be gone. Now, just sit back and wait, that and make 15 more gallons of RODI... :)

Good luck, Perry!
In my battles with red slime, third time was the charm.
The third time I dosed, I waited a lot longer to add Carbon and do a water change.
My first two attempts, within 3 days, I was attempting to remove the product with skimming, carbon and wcs.. It came back..
The third time, I left the skimmer off, carbon out and no wc for a week, if I remember.. I think it helped a lot and had no adverse effects in the reef whatsoever..

Yeah I'll be watching to see how the chemi pure works for you Perry. I'm battling a nasty case of red cyano in my 60 gallon. I'm slowly winning the battle but not sure that nutrient reduction will take it out completely.

Yeah man, the stuff is peeling right now, I am looking into the tank with a flashlight, and the rock underneath looks really clean. I am not going to run my skimmer, lights, or carbon and phos minus until after a water change on Thursday. I am pretty sure that the stuff will be mostly gone by then. I agree, other than the skimmer running crazy, I feel I should be ok post water changes. If it is not completely gone, I will wait and at least return to dusk dawn lighting for a few days and maybe wait until Saturday, I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for the info Matt, very helpful and gives me confidence in getting this nasty out :)

Hey Tim,
Like mentioned above, so far so good. I like that chemi pure does not mess with good bacteria, or shouldn't. I will likely update with some fresh pics over the weekend :)

Thanks Bulent,
In 24 hours I will allow my t5 lamps to come on. Today I am using ambient light in the room, and going to run led actinics as well, hopefully this will wake the corals up gently. On Monday, I cut out the lights midway through and decided to run the treatment. I wrapped the tank not allowing any light until this am. This am, I can only see small amounts of cyano remaining, that which is is peeling off and lifting into the water column. I am running filter socks through this treatment. Thanks for checking in on things, I will have some pics up in a few days.
Cheers,

Glad to hear that everything is going well so far Perry, i imagine the treatment thing is a bit nerve wracking to go through when your babies are in that water too....:sad2:

Perhaps give some extra 'good' bacteria to the system at a bit higher dosing levels than normal after the cyano is gone so it never gets another look in mate. :)

Yes mate,
This is absolutely great advice! I will be adding higher levels of bacteria(pro bio s) each day, I will likely do only 1/2 dosing of NP Pro and monitoring N&P. The corals were glowing, despite my cyano problem, my hopes are to restore the tank and bring in a bit of balance through a larger water change. Since this is probiotic reef salt, the larger water change should boost my bacteria. This and ticking my bacteria source up should hopefully strangle the cyano driving bacteria. Hoping so... Soon I will go online with all the medias stacked in my zeolite reactor, should fit no problem. This will be replaced every 4-5 weeks, following Debora's approach. I also hope the theory of adding heavy metals through the component dosing will also keep cyano away. Thanks for checking in Andrew!

Update:

I did a larger than normal dose of chemi clean for cyano. I decided to do this yesterday when I finally got a chance to observe the tank since Friday last week. The green cyano returned just has heavy as when I did a huge cleaning. I started yesterday at around 4. I also turned the lights off for 48 hours too. I won't do the full 72, but in 48 hours or more, Thursday I will resume with lighting. I will do a 30 gallon water change with AF Probiotic salts, and then resume the 3 part component system, and the pro bio s and np pro. They have all been suspended due to cutting out the lights. This morning, 15 hours later, I took a flashlight and looked into the tank. I see the cyano already lifting from the rock, this is a good sign that the chemi clean is going to work. I am running an air stone right now, and have a filter sock on to help collect the nasties. Wish me luck, I will update on Thursday with pics. Thanks!!!

Used 2 times Chemiclean during the last 2-3 years. I did not have a big amount of Ciano, but enough to bother me. I only stopped the skimmer. Lights and dosing continue working. All went great.

This month I have a small amount of red Ciano in the fuge. I have not done anything, assuming it is the consequence of my tank lost of equilibrium. It is slowly disappearing and have not spread at all to any other part.

You will be OK !!!

Best
Daniel

Acid trip update time! How's yours looking?

Branches are almost 1" long

Awesome piece! The "Jerry Garcia" of acros.

I would like to get a frag of that for my tank.

Any chance of you posting a pic of that in a full daylight phase of lighting?

Update:
Cyano is gone!!! Yipee!!! I also received my replacement Airstar pump 1200dc. This pump is perfect because I can trim it down to very low flow, the 1500dc with the air intake wide open, in 4" of water, was still overflowing my collection cup with a skim that was too wet. ATB stepped up and replaced with the less power 1200dc version, which I can already tell at 60% will be the sweet spot. I have it trimmed down to the lowest setting, and with the air intake wide open, I am still collection too much too quickly, due to the cyano treatment and the way it makes skimmer go nutz. I postponed my water change, that will occur today(30gallons). Pretty sure I will get the skimmer dialed in by the end of the weekend. I will start back dosing AF and have already returned to the component 123 dosing. Saturday I will start dosing bacteria, this and all other AF dosing. I have chosen to go heavy on bacteria and 1/2 on NP pro and the other products.

@ Daniel, thanks for the encouragement, you are right, no sweat, I will use this product again in the future without any reservations, of course in the event I have an outbreak like I did. The corals polyps were a bit receded on a few pieces, but that is also due to not feeding and lights out. All is good this am :)

@Charles and Kevin,
That is one sick piece, and I agree we will have to check that beauty out with a bit of white balance, I can tell it is crazy! My piece is also going pretty nutz, I have red, orange, green, yellow, and white hues popping at the tips. Mine is almost fully encrusted, and is throwing shoots everywhere, so hopefully I will get a growth spurt.
Cheers,

That is full daylight lol. I suck at photography and my tank is close to 20k. I'm just an iPhone point and shooter.

Perry, glad to hear your tank is coming along!!!

Charles,
Thanks Man, things are going great now, that green slime is gone! I have some corals not too happy and browned, but they should return in no time at all. The skimmer is now dialed in, much quicker than I thought. 30 gallons of water just changed out, and tomorrow will resume dosing schedule. I will be replacing zeolites, carbon and phos minus, I plan to run them in my zeolite reactor, but stacked using Debora's method. I will dial the flow until the point that the phos minus tumbles. Feels like a heavy amount of maintenance, but I am fairly sure it will pay off!

Is the bacteria you are dosing truely live bacteria? Or is it a bacteria stimulant?

It's live bacteria, that is why I believe I had a cyano outbreak, from not refrigerating the bacteria after it was opened. I am using the Aqua Forest for all bacteria, salt, and other supplements. The tank is looking great, despite a color down on some pieces. No worries, just want to dial in my big 3 right now, once that is back consistent, I will test nutrients and run full tests. Right now I am mainly focused on alk being consistent. I will try and get some pics this weekend.
Cheers,

Some pics from today, some are sort of paled out, but should return in short order. If you look at the rock there is no more green. Back to normal, hoping so anyway, lol... Thanks for looking!

Beautiful Perry! I especially like the side shot with all the contrasting colors:). Are you dosing MicroE, and if so, how much?

Matt,
I am not dosing E. I am using 100ml per day of the component system 123. At this point I am pretty much inline with what Debora is doing. I have also used my zeo reactor(vertex 1.5L), and stacked all 3 medias and tune flow until the phos minus tumbles, which is 80% open on the ball valve of the pump. I am already anticipating going through the component dosing too quickly, so I may switch to BRS which is cheaper and mix yourself. Really the only reason being that I do not see the component 123 dosing at same ratio, keeping up with calcium and magnesium. This is based on my alk being set to consistent uptake, and the others getting the same amounts. So, I may end up using the trace formulas down the road if my test results continue to be the same, or I may have to manually add these each week. Who knows, just have to give it some more time, only been balling for a 10 days.
Thanks Matt :)
