Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Catching up on all the threads I follow.

Things looking awesome as usual ... not sure I like the sand idea, current contrast is awesome, but I'm sure you'll make it work. :)

It just keeps getting more beautiful.! I wish you well with your sandbed undertaking.I would be very uneasy messing with success.

Hey Kevin,
Yes, a bit risky, but I am looking to diversify in animals within the tank, I am getting bored of the sterile look, to me, I want to see more gobies, wrasses, and other inverts that need sand. This is why I chose reef flakes, it will allow for high flow without sandstorms, and now they have it live, I am just going straight into the tank :)

looks great Perry, I personally prefer the look of sand bed, excited to see the change.

Hey Ryan, yep I do too, the tank is missing something, I am thinking this would be a good starting point. Cheers!

Very nice and pretty tank Perry. Colors looks fantastic.

Best !!
Daniel

Thanks Daniel! Since switching to the Component 123 system, I have seen a boost in overall coral health and growth, the product is truly working.

as always Perry!
BEAUTIFUL!!

thanks for the FTS!! your tank is great!!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers Buddy

Flo, no problem, your last post inspired some new pics, even though I am short on time lately, going back to work now 50 hours per week, I feel like I only have a hour or so with the tank each day. I tell you though, I feel like I am now noticing growth because I simply cannot examine every coral daily, lol... Cheers Mate!

Looks really good, Perry! Your growth has really taken off.
Looking forward to seeing a sandbed.
It'll brighten up the tank considerably.

Thanks Matt! I am now up to 240ml per day of the Component 123, but, I am seeing some pretty cool results, the left side is finally catching up, so the tank looks more balanced in a FTS. I am thinking the sand will offer more balance and diversity. I will be adding many more fish soon. Cheers!

Wow, I was just skimming through this thread and this is a great inspiration for the 120 I have in the works for the future lol...

Perry, your color and growth is great, and its incredible that you can handle such a bioload as you are planning. Since this is a bit much to go through page by page, I have a few questions if you don't mind...

1. What happened to the Powder Brown Tang?

2. How did the Powder Brown behave in a 4' tank? Think it would be fine in one based on your experience?

3. How do you plan to handle your massive bioload in the future?

4. What is BFC?

5. You don't find keeping a Leopard wrasse with a pair of mandarins a problem for copepods?

Thanks so much, and keep it up, will definitely be following this thread!

Hello and thank you for the kind words!
The powder brown was an amazing fish, unfortunately I lost several fish due to ick, this tank struggled for awhile with it, and went many months with a small bioload. Had my tank been ick free, I think the 4ft. tank would suffice an adult, assuming the tank was open design. I decided to move in the direction of high flow and no sand, so anthias seemed to be a good choice. I have since decided to keep just the 5 I have, and add other types of fish, as I am now adding sand. I currently have:
1 female true perc, 1 yellow tang, 3 bimaculatus anthias, 2 lyretail anthias, and 1 foxface.
So my BFC is really lacking right now. 8 fish in 120 gallon tank. I am adopting a tomini tang and another clown to pair with my female. After that, I will start adding wrasses and gobies. I will certainly add a small sand sifter, and yasha for sure. So I am really in the process of boosting my fish population at the moment, I have long been baffled at the fact that I had so many fish losses, with vibrant sticks....hmmm... I do use AF Fish V, and have noticed a huge improvement in the remaining fish, I have not had losses in several months, this is why I am now confident enough to start adding them. Thanks for checking things out! Cheers!

Thanks, nice that you are having more success with fish now.

My apologies, I didn't word that correctly earlier  What I meant was, what does BFC stand for and what does it mean?

Up until now people told me that 10-11 fish would be a quite heavy bioload for an SPS 120 even with a decent skimmer, and you are telling me that more would be fine?!

Yes, I plan somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 fish when I meet my goal. BFC means "Biggles Fish Coefficient" Biggles is another user who impressed upon the fact that more fish drives better SPS coloration. That all being said, my skimmer is rated for 450 gallons, I am not concerned over bioload :) I am also running full probiotic from Aquaforest! Cheers :)

Ye I am Flo, you know this more than anyone else around here, lol.... Cheers!

Well I can't wait to see the tank with sand and some new wrasse in it!! ;) looks fantastic Perry and the colours are just crazy cool!! :eek2:

Yep, the Aussies are definitely one of a kind, I follow surfing pretty intently, and the Aussies are always cutting up and partying like mad men. I love the comradery though, I also have a chuckle when they get interviewed. Where the heck is Andrew, is he ok? I am just wondering, that or he is about to drop a bombshell on us, lol... Tell him I said hello if you see him, and glad to see your tank coming along so nicely, it will be a beauty when you get them lovely acros in there :) Cheers Mate!
We do tend to stick together and no matter where in the world you go and stay an Aussie can always find another in the same building, it's a little bit weird given how small our population is :spin2: lol
haha Andrew is all good :) I caught up with him a few weeks ago. He's pretty busy and hasn't had much of a chance to catch up on the forums but I know he is lurking in the dark on the occasion :spin3: lol
Thanks Perry, it's all happy and settled and I'll be sure to say hello for you too :)

Awesome, glad to see he is ok, and also happy about your project too :) I just added the sand around 2 hours ago, the tank is quite murky, lol... Slime coming off corals and fish a bit recluse. I am skimming wet in hopes for a quick clearing. I will try and get some photos on Friday, I have the day off :) Cheers Mate!

Waiting impatiently to see shiny new, spanking white bottom pics!

And I do mean of the tank, Perry. This is a family forum. :)

Thanks Matt, and quite sure we would rather leave that other bottom at home, lol... Yes, the sand has already settled 100% used 40lbs live Tropic Eden Reef Flakes, nice course grade, and I am getting about a 3/4" depth throughout :)

Update:

Woke up today and the tank is crystal clear, the sand is WHITE, and fish and corals happy. PE was even more extended with feeder polyps much longer. A bit of sand powder settled on back glass wall and the rock, but much better than I anticipated. Next week, buying a few fish and inverts :)

That Tropic Eden Sand is in a class by itself - best sand ever! Watch your Alk carefully for the next few days though- I always have a little spike when adding the sand.

shmicko:
Describes that is considered groovy/cool/awesome
"wow Perry's tank is pretty shmicko"

:lolspin: I forget I'm a crazy Aussie sometimes... :wildone:

Can you shmicko in Fanta Pants?

Or is that like dividing by zero and will break the internet?

Question perry. You said you could add reefflakes to the tank as they now make a "live" version. Well I use the old reeflakes (dry) and was going to add a little more sand as mine is wearing thin. Why would you have not just added the dry sand directly to the tank, and what should I do with it first then?

Thanks for the heads up concerning alk Matt, and yes, Tropic Eden Reef Flakes is the bees kness :)

Waiting for the pics, up until now I was thinking I would go with caribsea seaflor, but maybe this is another consideration!

Pics will be ups soon :)

I went on Premium Aquatics website and had full intention of using dry sand, but when I saw that they had the live version too, I figured it would not disrupt the biological process of the probiotic program as much, less likely to have diatoms. Just my thoughts :) I think dry would be fine, I just don't want to wait for the life, cheers Mike!

In for Pics with sand as well. Im thinking about switching from barebottom as well

Thanks Diesel, pics on the way! Cheers

I really love the look of a reef tank with a sandbed. It gives you much more contrast and colors shine.
Amazing tank Perry

Sergi

Love it, Perry!
Mush nicer and more natural looking.

Thanks Matt, yes I too love the look of sand, but more importantly, I love the multitude of fish and inverts that you can support with sand. I am looking forward to upping my BFC :) Cheers Matt!!!
