Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Perry, thanks from me too for the info:thumbsup:
You 're right about the routines and each tank bud.
f.e np pro started giving me results after i raised 3-4 drops from what AF suggested.

p.s
Started the probiotic salt too.Think i'm going to stick with it:p

Hey Perry, Dave told me the other way was cheaper but i dug my heels in to make it goof proof to use the main supplements. I dosed a days alk through the ato in 4 hours and dripped calcium over 24 hrs the first day because i assumed 1 would be alk ! You see what i mean Perry, i don't like the anti instinctual nature of the AF stuff. If you ask what are the big three we ALL answer alk, calcium and Mg. We do not say calcium, alk and Mg......... get this sorted Perry or i am going to start firing off emails to AF ! I know i can rely on you mate not to let me and all the others struggling with the AF minefield of nonsensical product naming down buddy

I'm using 150ml of the 123 - considering how many more acros i have compared to you my growth is terrible atm. This is why i will copy you and Matt if things don't change drastically once the sand is back in and the new sump is running the matrix more efficiently.
I have started adding build at 4 drops a night. I wanted to buy energy, vitality and the bacteria along with the fish v but all of those are the ones taking longer to get customs clearance :hammer:
Everything else is in stock anytime i want to try it. I was very surprised at how cheap everything is. The red sea blue costs about $125 normally and the AF non probiotic salts are only $90-. I think the probiotic is also cheaper.
Running the phos minus and carbon with matrix instead of zeo mix would prob work almost the same if i wanted to try that control method out. What do you think mate.
My BFC is terrible since the mass fish removal/loss over the last two months. :(

Andrew, sorry mate, was pushed to get to work this AM, wanted to reply, but thought it more important to spend my only 30 minutes with coffee, updating what I am doing with my system. Keep the questions and responses rolling, I am very appreciative of your attendance and stopping in on the journal. Best to you Mate!!!

Wow your tank is awesome. I'm hoping I'll be able to have mine look half as good as your hopefully my cycle will start this weekend and go quickly.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the kind words man, just trying to keep a happy and healthy reef, glad you like it my friend! Cheers :)

Thanks heaps Perry - i was just about to pester you after seeing Matt post his..........

No worries Mate! I am stoked to hear you are at least contemplating using some of the AF products, you have served as an inspiration to me, and I am glad to do anything I can to pay it back:) Keep in mind that when the acros get comfy, you will be adding much more than 150ml per day of Component 123.... LOL... Cheers Mate!

Always my pleasure, good to hear about the salt switch, let me know how things go... Yes, too many are so worried over being too calculated, this program is quite gentle, and once more people get to understand, don't be surprised to seeing many more tanks running these products :) Cheers my good friend! :)

LOL Flo, we are all students sir! I just thought it would be important to update the dosing routine, I don't blame anyone who doesn't want to read through all the pages of this thread, it would be exhausting :) Cheer Mate!

New scape looks great Perry!

Thanks maxxII, the scape is basically the same, but I did add some sand and made a coral rock to fill negative space on the left side :)

Update:

Couldn't help but to check out Stormborn's anniversary sale today, and I did come home with some acros :) 2 new Bali Maricultured tenuis, one pink and the other blue(looks like OP). I also picked up a Yasha Goby paired with a pistols shrimp, so continuing to up my BFC, but still much more work to do in that department, lol... Cheers!

congrats on the new acros Mate!
but on question came to me while sleeping...
so you are dosing Energy, Build, Amino and Vitality only ever other day alternating and never together? because i am dosing Build and Energy every night and every other night all 4 together... i remember reading that build may cause cyano? thanks buddy!

Hey Flo,
Yes I alternate the doses, to me this has worked well. AF Build is actually one of those you can do every day, and can exceed the dose, as it helps to keep cyano in check, not cause it. Hope that helps buddy:)
Cheers!

thanks buddy!

will try to alternate as well and stop with the regular stuff.
was dosing Energy and Build daily... maybe alternating will be better ;)

Cheers

I was going to make a road trip to Orlando LFSs but instead got to see Perry's reef instead

I cancelled the remainder of my stops because I realized that I was not going to see better corals at any other stop, I was not going to learn more then I just had [was already on information overload], and I was not going to obtain better pieces then I had just arranged with Perry.

The display is even better in person then viewed online. It is awesome when each coral's individual colors are jumping out at you from across the room as you enter.

I returned home with a couple of new pieces, an entirely new view of my own tank, a plan on the next small adjustments, and a clear understanding of what is possible.

Thanks again.

Kevin,
It was great seeing you again, to think that you drove from St. Pete to my home to visit me and the reef is just humbling. I am honored that you wanted to see the reef, and that you drove about 200 miles to see it! WOW... Thank you for the kind words about the tank and corals, they all really appreciate the love, as do I, will be getting you some of the collector pieces together for you next visit :)
Cheers

Wow, what an amazing tank! Been looking into the aquaforest stuff for the last few days and your tank might have sold me on it. Got any tips for someone like me just getting started again? Kinda feeling dumb for ordering a box of hw-marine salt and a brs 2 part package a few weeks ago.

Thanks for posting your AF regimen, Perry. Food for thought..
There seems to be a secret message in the above post.. Something along the lines of NEW ACQUISITIONS but no pictures, so maybe I'm mistaken..
I couldn't, for the life of me, understand how somebody could say they got new stuff but then not follow up with some photos... Who would do that? Right!?!
I guess I'm mistaken in the secret message...... ;)

Hey iLLwill, thanks so much for the kind words man! I notice you from the Orlando area, welcome back into the sps game :) Basically with AF you can go full on with Probiotic system, and use your own mineral and trace game, or you can cover that with a one dosing solution in 3 bottles, dosed equally to maintain the mineral and trace, that being Component 123. It really depends on what you are after. I would recommend starting by establishing your reef at NSW values for starters. Second, I would look into a media like siporax or matrix to be added to the tank that will serve as a continuous biological filter. This sets the groundwork for running a bac driven system. AF is about to release a new product that is pre-loaded bacteria media, designed for similar use, without the wait time of bacterial seeding. This I will most certainly be adding to my reef :) It is called AF Life Bio Fil. They are also set to be releasing AF Poly Glue, a glue worked at warm temps outside the tank that hardens in the tank, but can be re-used. This will be amazing for fragging purposes. I will be trying both soon :) I would look over the product guide and download the pdf file, this will explain the products better, also query on the Probiotic lineup for demanding SPS, this is the system I use fully, I also have my schedule updated if you did not already see it. Thanks :)

Matt,
I will have to get take a few pics today of the new corals, I will also picture some that have not been spoken of much. Trying to not put up the same old boring pics, I don't bring that level of excitement that you, Matt, and Andrew bring when it comes to loads of acros, so I have to use that other strategy....lol.... On your request my friend, I will snap some pics later, caught me on my day off, clever aren't you ;)

Ok Matt,
Here you go....

Bali Pink Tenuis Maricultured, does not quite have the glow as other pictured around it...

Bali Blue Tenuis, this one is going to rock!

IMG_7067.jpg
[/IMG]

$10 brown out mariculture acquired a while ago that is showing some glow...

IMG_7065.jpg
[/IMG]

Some sort of milli, starting to show some pink hues

IMG_7066.jpg
[/IMG]

Not sure on ID, but both pieces the same, so they can co-join and hopefully sprout

And a few random top downs with multiple corals...

Holy crap, how did I not notice you are like a half hour away from me? I've been really enjoying catching up on your thread ... we have a lot of similarities in our starter setups, and the upgrades you've done are on my "someday soon" list.

Sorry if I missed it, (or haven't gotten to it yet) but did your ati fixture make any kind of noticeable difference over the tek with the same bulbs? I just got a pretty awesome deal on an aquatic life 6-bulb and a pannorama blue LED suppliment that will be going over my tank tomorrow when the new bulbs arrive. Probably should have saved up for an ati, but the price was right and I dont have to drill holes in my ceiling just yet.

I'll look into that media, but will probably hold off till that new AF stuff is released. should give me plenty of time to get my dosing figured out and stable. In the meantime i'll just play around with the old school 2 part and kalk and focus on getting some more fish, and better equipment.

Ha, Ha, thanks iLLwiLL, always good to have a fellow reefer close by ;) I did notice a massive improvement when switching units, I went from a tek 8 bulb elite fixture to the sunpower 8 bulb fixture. The heat was by far less, much better on the eyes too. The colors are sort of close, the new combo is a bit more white than my next combo, but all in all a great investment, it runs so cool, I love the fixture :) Keep in touch, and look forward to seeing your tank come alive! Best of luck!
