Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

I think Dom meant "humble", not "smug".

I'm interested to see if you notice any changes when switching from the pre-mix to the DIY mix. Are you up on RO/DI filters? Do you monitor RO/DI closely, or not so much? I'm super meticulous on that front.

Hi Perry,

I'm interested in the DIY component version as well. Once made, will you dose the same amount you were dosing with the premixed version? In other words, following the instructions, are both supposed to be the same?

Thank you

Sergi

Sergi,
Yes, this is the same product and is intended to be dosed equally in 3 mixes.
You will need AF Calcium, AF Magnesium, AF KH Buffer, AF Reef Mineral Salt, and AF Component Strong(4 small bottles in each pack, each 50ml, which is Component A Strong, B, Strong, C Strong, and K Strong) Here is the breakdown:

Bottle 1:
AF Calcium~ 50 grams per 1 liter
AF Magnesium~ 10 grams per 1 liter
Component A Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter
Component B Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

Bottle 2:
AF KH Buffer~ 80 grams per 1 liter
Component C Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

Bottle 3:
AF Reef Mineral Salt~ 25 grams per 1 liter
Component K Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

* I use the the premix bottles as to re-use the product, they are all 5 liter bottles, so I multiply values times 5

LOL Mindy,
I get Dom's humor, but what he was saying was actually a huge compliment, and I appreciate my mate for that, I just want him to know that I try and remain as humble as possible. We are sometimes one mistake away from many months of hard work, so sometimes I guess it is important to recognize our efforts :)

Mindy, as far as my updates with RODI go, I have a 3 line tds meter, and use AquaFX 4 chamber system. I have plenty of micron filters, I change them monthly. I change Carbon every 2-3 months. Right now I read 8 tds from the RO membrane, TDS is 158 coming in, and 0.00 out of RODI. I use AF Demineralization Resin, it is very high quality and capacity. I recently changed the RO membrane, and installed an AquaFX booster pump to the system. I have learned that this water quality cannot be ignored, so I check it every time I start and finish making water. Cheers!

Thank You Dom!
LOL, I would be more known for being the opposite of smug, the ego is something I find as a problem, and on a much larger scale ;) I prefer to remain humble and enjoy seeing the health of the inhabitants that live in my box of water. I believe my current success with growth and color happened when I went online with the Component 123 system. I have been using pre-mixed formula, but yesterday received a bulk order of the DIY version, AF Calcium, AF Magnesium, AF KH Buffer, AF Reef Mineral Salt, and AF Component Strong. I am using the same containers that I have been using with the premixed version, makes sense to recycle right. That said, I have many of those bottles stacking up, as I am going through 230ml per day of the 3 parts of the Component system. It makes sense, Michael has been doing this for awhile, he is going through I think like 380ml per day on his 200g. Anyway, I appreciate the kind words as always and appreciate you looking over the journal. Cheers Mate!
You are most definitely the opposite of smug Perry :p wouldn't stop you smiling every time you saw that work of art though ;)
I'm definitely looking forward to giving the component system a go! I'm not going to start out with Component Strong as it won't be much point until my acro's are back in and settled again. Once that happens I'll add component strong to the mix :) AF Build seems really intriguing as well though! I think I'll be going DIY to start with and decided on how I'm going to make my dosing containers lol
I've always got my eye on your build Perry, I'd hate to miss any updates!! :eek1:

They're pretty much the same thing, aren't they? :lolspin:

It's always good to stir the pot and I enjoy it way too much lol I'm glad you have an understanding of the strange Aussie humour I have Perry :) lol
I agree with that though, reef tanks are always a single step or mistake away from total disaster and that's part of the art of keeping an amazing tank! Remaining humble is a great way to keep you on your toes and looking out for your animals :)

Stellar! Colors are wonderful!

Ok Matt,
Here you go....

Bali Pink Tenuis Maricultured, does not quite have the glow as other pictured around it...

Absolutely an amazing tank. Keep up the good work.

This may have been asked already but I could t find the answer in this thread.

What's your lighting schedule and fixture height?

How do you like the reefbrite led's to supplement the t5 fixture?

Hello,
Reefbrites on at 7am and off at 8pm
2x t5 blue+ on at 8am and off at 7pm
6x t5 blue+ x2, coral+ x2, abs x2 on at 9am and off at 6pm

Wow what a sps tank,,, a sight to see,,, awesome setup and super clean,, nice job

Thank you very much! I have a sort of ocd, especially with the way the corals are perched throughout the reef, so it is always a work in progress, but I am getting much closer to contentment, lol... Cheers!

Colors are stunning Perry, really rich and clean pigments.

It turns out comp 3 is not Mg as i thought it was for the first five days dosing - when i had a go at Dave today about the entire 123 fiasco all he could say was ' well you really should have at least read what was in each one tbh ' and then he smiled at me in a ' you moron ' way..........

Yeah Mate,
I decided to sort of break everything down here on the thread, and even the DIY setup from AF too, so hopefully it will make it easier for you my friend, lol... Well, you may want to double check the K levels, as that is present with Reef Mineral Salt, just a buffer to make it all balance out. Remember, dose all 3 in equal parts mate:) Thanks for the kind words too Biggles!

I grabbed a new salifert potassium kit at Dave's shop yesterday since mine gave one drop to turn blue - 470+. 10 mins later a second test took 26 drops - 280.
The new kit tested 450 two times in a row so i'm going with that, as long as it's over 400 somewhere i'm happy.
I checked out the comp strong diy stuff at the shop and will be using that with the AF alk, calcium and Mg bulk balling chemicals since they are actually cheaper to buy than the bulk chemicals Dave can buy - crazy to me but as a heads up to others, check out the cost of your bulk dosing chemicals against the AF tubs as you might be surprised at the price diff.

I'll be going over anything i'm not sure of with you and Matt before i set up the DIY AF balling solutions Perry lol........;)

Andrew, the cool thing of mixing your own is that if you run low on mag, you can increase the amount, likewise with calcium. When I mix the calcium, I use less than required, more mag than required, and standard on KH buffer and Reef Mineral Salt. You can really dial in your number this way. Also the benefit of all trace covered too, I have the larges tubs available of the Mag, Calcium, KH Buffer and Reef Mineral Salt, really hope to see AF come out with larger bottles of the 4 Components in Component Strong...

Thanks for breaking his all down. Question tho. What if I just want to dose 2 part to keep the ALK & CA in check?

I hope you are getting paid from aquaforest or like a staffer. I've seen a ton of people thanking you for helping and turning them to AF. Lol

If I want to use the pre made Components 123 will it equate to the same dosage as other brands? I do not know if it would be the same concentration as ESV. I need to purchase Alk and Ca soon. Would like to try the AF product. I am currently dosing 52ml Alk daily but only 30ml ca.
Would I start off with 50ml daily with the AF product?

You could do this, but the mix your own is really affordable, and why not have all the trace and all needed for a hair more $, I think it is well worth it, even pre-mixed is affordable for small setups. I am going through 5 liters every 20 days, so mixing myself is the route to take.

Kevin,
Other users who have switched have told me it is close to that of BRS, yes 50ml is a starting point, everyday at same time measure alk. Once you get to the level after a few days of testing, you are all set, whatever your values are at that point, you can buffer to desired levels, then set your doser. It took me a week or so to get dialed in, and I have had to increase a few times, lately it has not budged all that much :) I now test weekly...

Thanks, Perry. Will do. Purchased a Kamoer KSP-F three channel doser. Will set that up when I get a cabinet to hide everything in. First I will get the Component 123 and get dialed in.
I hope you got the pics of your coral getting settled in and coloring. They were happy, healthy corals to begin with so it was an easy transition.

Hey Kevin,
