pet peeve

In my geography and planning class, we viewed a chart that shaded all the areas of the United Stated, where "carbonated beverages" were called differently. The South, all the way to Texas, says, Coke. Now that bothers me because if I go into a restuarant and ask for a coke and they say what kind of coke, I assume, diet, regular, and maybe vanilla. I do not get Coke, to mean Dr. Pepper. The midwest does refer to pop, and the east, mainly calls it soda. Can't remember the majority of the west, I think they call it soda. It is all an interesting geographical concept. Maybe one should do a study about where people call the "Z" word differently. I will pay for the funding. :D

Don't forget cherry. And zero? And they had a 2 for a while. :) So you actually meant Classic? As do I every time I say it. I'm going with the ask for Coke get a Dr. Pepper peeve as well. I live in the South, so I hear it often enough. I just won't drink a Pepsi.

Another geographical concept for you... In the South we typically refer to things by their most successful/established brand name even when they mean product type. Coke, Kleenex, ... I've seen lists of these with about 30 brands. At work (electrical construction) we all refer to Lineman's Pliers as Kleins when each and every one of us owns a bag/box full of other Klein brand tools. I wonder how many reefers in the south say they need to mix up some new instant ocean water.

I am more concerned with husbandry, proper lighting, flow, diease prevention, problem solving, helping, sharing, listening and learning.

When you click on the Zoanthid forum to come here and you see the word Zoa, I simply can't believe that anyone of resonable intelligence couldn't figure it out.

Is this your peeve? :D Congratulations, you have contributed to annoying and/or disappointing yourself. ::p

when I want Pepsi that's what I ask for... if I want Dr. Pepper that's what I ask for.... When I want Jack and Coke I ask who's driving :spin2:

None taken. Of course I (and others) know what zoa refers to, "zoo"s too, otherwise I wouldn't have posted about it.

Being in the medical field, I am all for abbreviations and acronyms, but I am also for correct terminology and labeling (mistakes = deaths).

All that said, I think that calling a zoanthid a "zoo" is like calling a boat a "boo" or a goat a "goo," none of which make much sense.

I think some of the confusion is because many people pronounce it Zooanthid, and not Zoanthid like they're supposed to. Zo sounds like toe.

Good point, I suppose we should change toe to "too."

It goes beyond that with softdrinks, and it varies by state and sometimes even a specific area of a state. In WI it's soda, in IL it's usually pop. Then there's the whole bubbler thing, I had no freaking idea what people were talking about the first time I heard it and I grew up within 30 miles of WI. For those that don't know, a bubbler is a drinking fountain.

But "you" always open the door and look inside JUST incase someone did leave you a frag....

.... well, 'en, I'm sorry, but I was taught "zoo" by my teacher and friend. He passed to me a great deal of his knowledge, inspiration, and passion... as well as his bad habits.

Calling zoanthids zoos, giving oscars and other giant south american cichlids rediculous names (like Fast Eddie, Doctorot, etc.), greeting fish when I enter a fish store by their scientific name ("Why, hello little Pseudotrophis exasperatus, although your classification has shifted to put you in the family Melanochromis, you little cuties, you!"), all sorts of manner of distasteful habits.
