Pete's 110 build

Any word about the new skimmer with the DC Pump? I am shopping around for skimmers for an 80 gallon tank, and I hate it. So much hype out there, I would just like a skimmer that consistently pulls junk out of the water.

Hey there Pete. Is there any chance of a new video of your SPS in full lighting? -I was looking through your Youtube Channel yesterday and the last one of those videos was like Xmas 2012, and another I think in Sept 2012.

Thanks.

Sorry I've been away for a while. The tank has been fine but I lost a couple acroporas for reasons I haven't been able to confirm. I suspect a couple things and it could be a combination but the acroporas I lost were ones I considered more hardy (Blue Tort and the yellow Tenuis and a couple others). The odd thing is the monteporas, chalice's, Gorgs, and everything else (including the Acropora Hoeksemai, the Pearlberry and others) continue to do just fine.

The things I suspect:
1. I stopped using the Flatworm exit - I didn't have flatworms but wanted to try this stuff as I heard it did wonders for the corals and it did. The skin and polyps looked healthier then ever but I went away for a couple weeks and just forgot to start using it again. My suspicion is the corals got use to feeding off the stuff and when I stopped they starved.

2. The added white LED lights, though I toned them down significantly.

3. My water TDS crept up to 13 PPT "“ I changed all the filters and it's back down to 0. I even changed my RO to a 75gpd (it was a 100gpd) based on some reading that the 100gpm ones let more through.

4. The two acropora nipping angels in my tank L

5. Low Mg, but it wasn't too bad at just under 1300, I try to keep it closer to 1450 "“1500.

6. Long term effect of reduced feeding. I haven't fed Cyclopeeze in a while so I may start back up. Again if the corals were use to the high feeding rates thy may have starved.

7. Po4 never got out of control but my GFO was old so I changed it out after the acropora loss.

Tank is looking great, Pete. I like those cloves.

Thanks Chris

Man I wish I had access to corals like that!

Thanks

Please,please please do a walk around video!Please.

I will, I need to do some major cleaning and will be out of town again shortly so may not get back to it for a few weeks.

Those cloves are insane! Love them. :)

Thanks Brett, they continue to do great. I just hope they stay that way

I took a picture of one they had in the store but I don't have much more information on them.

I have a question. I'm trying to accomplish the same color scheme in my tank when taking pictures. When you take your normal photos the rocks look gray and "Rock looking" and the colors of your corals aren't as vibrant compared to your other photos when the rocks look like there covered in coralline, all an amazing purple color and the colors of your coral is jaw dropping....how do you accomplish this? I've tried all different lighting and can not get that effect.

Any update on your tank sir? Would love to see another video....have been following you for a while and admire your work...
I haven't made a full tank video for a while- I need to do some cleaning but have been pretty busy to the point I'm just keeping up. I hope to get things in shape soon and then I'll post anohter video. Thanks for watching.

Hmm, hard to decipher exactly, but I will admit my lighting on the top of the rock wall is very different from the walls. The top gets an intense mix of LED's and T5's where the walls (other then reflective) get mainly LED lighting. Many of my photos are taken later at night where the T5's are off and the white LEDs are dimmed. This late night lighting effect (mainly royal blues) set up a lighting environment that really makes the corals pop (at least those that react to the royal blue LEDs).

The timing of photo opportunities for me are mainly at night and is why I want to build the manual override dimming control box.

Other then areas that don't get light my rocks are pretty much covered in coralline or coral.

Thanks for asking :)

As noted above, there haven't been many updates. I did finally do my recirc mod to the skimmer but that's about it.

We will need to see another Christmas 2013 video :)

Your thread has been an absolute delight, thank you for sharing your experience. After reading it I'm removing a frag rack from my sump and going with a slower flow with lots more life.
