sometimes I think the whole reefkeeping hobby is one giant science experiment, what other hobbies do you get to learn so much about; mechanical systems, biology, chemistry & economics

but the most amazing part of it is when you wrap it all up it really gives you an appreciation of nature

My wife has wanted something yellow in the tank and likes the flowing softies, so I broke down and picked up my first leather. It's going on the dining room side of the tank with a couple more softies and LPS
We also picked up a Cynarina Lacrymalis, it's one of the ones that kind of looks like a bubble coral with transparent polyps that show the internal colors. It reminds me of looking at the top of a jellyfish. I'll have to post a picture later

I like that leather, the yellow toadstools Frank had were really nice too.
It was really tempting to get that clown tang or one of the powder blues, but I just don't have the time to acclimate, QT, or stress about a new fish not eating considering that I'm leaving next Wednesday.
PS: My fish hate the pellets I bought, they spit them out and let them sit on the bottom of the reef. They love flakes though, so I'll probably pick up some formula 2 flake and give you those pellets since your tangs like them.

dont leathers secrete a mucous coat that sloughs off and potentially snuffs out other corals? ive never had a leather before but ive heard of some sort of waxy coating that comes off of it with some regularity. i cant say anything for sure obviously since i havent had one, but it might be something to watch out for if it is true?

tonight I noticed my smallest clam was all but covered by the larger clams and some turf algae, so I pulled my clam cage out and cleaned up the area of the turf algae was and let the tangs clean the clam shells of what was left over. After about an hour I replaced the cage and everyone was happy. I still want to build a nicer looking cage by using black egg crate. I'll probably heat it up and bed it around a cylinder to make a semicircle and then use some black gutter guard on the top.

someone was picking on them - they were so nipped up and retracted my wife and I thought for sure they were goners. We lost a couple before hand that seemed to be doing fine then all of a sudden they were hyper scarred and eventually died from what we now think was starvation.
the nips were small so I'm thinking the coral beauty but I've never seen it bother the clams. I have seen one of my yellow tangs check them out and nip right at the edge of the mantle but thought it may have been going after some algae just like it does on everything else. And I know my lawnmower blenny has nipped but I never saw bite marks from him, plus I wold think if it was the LMB the bite marks would have been larger or more of a tear.
So never knowing just who was doing the nipping and fearing they would be goners if we did nothing I rigged up a cheap looking cage out of some egg crate scrap. Once installed it only took a couple days for them to recover. At first they had scars where te mantle grew back but now you can't tell. The cage has been on for several months (maybe 6 - I'd have to check back on the log) but they fully recovered and we have never seen them look so healthy.

yeah - it distracts but as long as the clams are happy it worked. Now the question is if I remove it will the nipper come back, I venture to think that the chance is high and that's why I want a nicer looking cage.

this little guy looks very happy, he was actually my biggest concern
this maxima looks like it lost some pigmentation on the far side mantle, and I'm thinking it may have been shaded by the maxima clams mantel.
and speaking of the maxima - I think I need to move him away from the glass just a tad
