they have to do what they feel is best for there business, not for the users..
Jason,
We've known each other for a long time but I simply cannot disagree with you more on this comment. The very reason this board is successful is a result of the policies and practices we've had for years. If RC is so "business" focused and didn't care about the users, nobody would be coming here and we wouldn't be having this discussion because the domain would be up for sale. Every single decision we make around policies
always asks "what do the members need/want?" and "What is best for the
entire member base?" It is never "because the sponsors said so" or "RC will make more money".
Regarding cross posting to other forums....There are 2 issues here.
First, we absolutely allow cross posting of links to other
discussions. i.e. "In answer to your question about ick, check out this thread on reefs.org/threadid=123654."
We do not allow "go check out
www.reefs.org".
Now, the exception to these rules is when some forum/vendor has violated our policies to the point that we've had to block their URL from being displayed and that shoots down both scenarios above.
Yes, this site generates money, but it also costs an incredible amount of money to keep these forums and ReefKeeping Magazine running. The bigger you get, the more it costs. To those fledgling sites out there that curse the name of RC because of how big we are or our "rules"...I would say be careful what you wish for...I've watched a number of those new sites open up over the years as "free for all" environments and after time...rules and policies started suddenly popping up (
gasp even commercial policies)...IMO, a Wild West type of forum simply cannot survive in the long term because having that structure is unmanageable and alienates both people and sponsors. And without those, you'd better have some very deep personal pockets to keep it alive.
