Photo Journal

Still curious to know if you're using a bellows with that? :)

For your white balance try white balancing the camera manually on a piece of rock. That seems to work pretty well.

A lot of folks think that it is as easy as buying a decent camera. Unfortunately, you have to understand your camera (and how it works) as well. We did a Photog 101 seminar at a club meeting recently to teach some of the basics.

I also set my wb to my sand bed and it works pretty well. Give that one a try. I have an expodisc, but I have heard that you can use a thin coffee filter.

Now that I've learned what not to do and how to stage the corals for photography, over the next week I plan on re-shooting all the corals

Beautiful pics! A couple of questions.

Do you have higher resolution images of the following picture?

It was probably my personal favorite out of the collection. I like to use them for a background, and if the resolution is high enough, I may have it blown up to a poster like I have done with another RC'ers Great Barrier Reef Dive pic.

So I was just wondering if you have a higher resolution one for that purpose or not.

This is the new tank viewing room, totally dedicated to the new 215 starphire, we decided to paint the tank wall a deep chocolate color thats used thru the rest of the house, the stand and canopy are a cherry color and the we thought the olive green wall behind it would look a little odd. The main goal of the room was to have a cozy and comfortable place to relax and watch the tank. We should start installing the tank this Thu

The above pic was taken when the paint was still wet, so it looks very glossy, actually a mat finish and dries to a much, much darker color.

Well thank you, I still feel like the images look like horrible, I have a lot more to learn
Here are some of this evenings shots

Loving the details on this one

Are you guys using tripods, SB600 or SB800 flash and do you use two flash lights or just one? Which tripod are you using? I also have a D40 but have not purchased a Macro lens yet. I am hoping my old Vivitar 28-105mm Macro Focusing Zoom will work with the D40. I bought this lens 25 years ago for my Nikon FE. Everything will be manual but fun if it works.

I always shoot in raw mode and then use photoshop cs2 to set the white balance. Whats cool is that you can adjust the color temp with a value so once you figure out the proper color temp for your lights you always have a great place to start.

Another trick someone told me was to set your exposure to -.3 when you shoot as its easier to correct under exposure than over exposure. Anyway all of these settings (and more) can be adjusted after the fact with the RAW mode import screen. It helps me a bunch as I am almost always have a setting off a bit :)

FYI....when shooting macro you really notice when your contact lens rx changes....I couldn't for the life of me get a good pic, went to the Doc and sure enough my rx had changed.....I shoot in manual........No images are in focus...LOL
