Picasso / Rodonyx FIRST BATCH

In my recent hatches at a little lower temp, It would not be day seven. I have yet to have any hatch in seven days, always eight days or more. When my tank temp drops, as it has because one 250 MH Balest is bad and coming in the mail, the hatch happened over the eighth and ninth night. Say about 20-30% night 8 and the rest on 9th. Keep watching the eyes to get the look, they start to turn bronze the night of. I have read that if papa goes to sleep after lights out, no hatch. If papa is fanning the eggs after lights out, it will be that night. However, I have not witnessed this with my pair as of yet, still kind of new spawning pair so we'll see....Hope this helps. Carl

thanks Carl. anything info. is appreciated.

i got paranoid tonight and got my larvae tank ready with sterilized broodstock water anyway. hopefully its ok for tommorrow. i figure worse scenario its a water change for the broodstock tank :)

I've done that. :) Should be ok, next time I suggest night of just because it give less time for bacteria to build, no biggy.

I got a PM from Huey about an hour ago and he said 1.5 hrs after lights out and still no hatch. Poor guy is probably pacing the carpet in his living room like a daddy in a delivery room.

HEH i can only imagine what both of those feel like but i hope to expierence that soon

good luck and let us know how it went.

those breeders with a 'snagger" how soon do you put it in , after the lights and pump are off?

i forgot my heater was in the fuge area so my temps dropped down to 78 from 80 within the 2 hr time frame the pumps were not feeding from the fuge, where the heaters are placed. im going to put in an additional heater in the display area to neutralize this change.

temps are mostly around 79degrees, maybe this is the cause for the delayed hatching. i knew it might be an issue, but did not expect it after day 9.

Well, I'll be putting mine in right around light's out tonight. Not sure when I'll turn on the "collection light" though...

Matt

matt

how do you have your collection light set>? is it pointing straight down or across the surface. im using one of those small pen mag lights.

looks like we both will be having fun tonight lol

i hope mine hatch atleast :)

PLEASE PUT PICS UP SO I CAN START CONSTRUCTION TONIGHT :-p

sry for caps gotta type with them at work

but pics ideas for my just in case will be nice

My collector uses a clam on headlamp that I've "blacked out" to leave a small pinhole size opening...it still puts out arguably too much light.

Matt

point it straight down right in front of the flow into to the collector.

I got 550 larvae once with a pinhole (electrical tape over a mini maglight) light. They lived, mostly.

thanks kathy.!

i was concerned since the mag light shines a relatively bright column of light down to the bottom of my tank, since its only 1 foot deep. i was concerned larvae would hang out on the bottom.

They might hang out the whole length of the light column. I've seen it happen. The hole I used is 1 mm in diameter. I almost could not see the light it gave off. But it was enough.

thank you, i put duct tape to form a small slit , but ill try to reduce it even more.

kathy, after you turn off your pumps, when do you add your snagger and turn on your mag light?

thank you.

LOL
A light coming from the sky, the little guys feel attracted then something sucked them inside and they are taken to a paralel world. :D Sounds like abduction! :D
Sorry ;)
Anderson.

Sequence of events:
Turn off pumps 15 minutes before lights out.
(turn on bubbler. I am absent minded and I don't want to lose my broodstock. If i forget to turn the pumps back on, the broodstock will be OK with just the bubbler.)
Install snagger, plug in minijet, adjust level.

Lights go out
Wait impatiently
30-45 minutes later, larvae arrive
When I don't see any more larvae enter the box, and a quick flashlight check reveals that the eggs have all hatched, I turn the lights back on.
Lift the corner of the box to raise the hole out of the water, and simultaneously turn off the minijet.
Remove minijet from box
Carefully remove box and immerse/pour larvae into larvae tank. Marvel at the tiny wonders!
Rinse snagger and put away
Turn parent tank pumps back on, and thank the broodstock.
Start a freshwater drip to reduce salinity in the larvae tank.
Turn all the lights out and go to bed.

In the morning, I take a digital picture, then I add live phytoplankton and enriched rotifers. If I am unlucky, I siphon dead bodies out of the tank. Luck has been with me lately, but you never know...
