Pics from Maui, Lanai and Kauai

Blownsvt: I wanted to do a shore dive, but I blew threw my diving allowance pretty fast! Plus, my wife and I are expecting, so my dive buddy couldn't come with me.

We spent most of our time on the western side of Maui. Have you done any shore dives there? I saw a number of diver's dive Black Rock. I think a shore dive in Honolou Bay would be pretty cool.

How about Tunnels Beach in Kauai. That's supposed to be amazing if you can go with someone familiar with the area.

i have never done way western maui, but we usually stay at the mauna kai maui which is in kihei so west central i guess you could say. we did a dive right of the beach of the hotel in 2 different places. Saw some interesting stuff, including seaturtls right from there. We also did a dive just past wailea. you can walk out into the lava rock a little ways at low tide times and gear up and then drop in off the ledge. there were some interesting rock formations there that made the dive really cool.

Also if you head back into the lava fields past waliea there is a spot that a lot of people don't know about. the only marker for it is a big giant rock on the side of the road that has a big ole crack running through it. From there you can park and hike through the lava fields. there is a narrow foot trail that you hike down probably a solid 1/2 mile maybe more. When you get back there there is a small little sandy beach if i recall and a nice area of really quiet water that was loaded with reef life. It's better suited to snorkeling though because of the hike and the water is not overly deep. Most tourists do not know about this spot though unless they hear about it from a dive shop or other locals.

Great shots! When I dove Molokini Crater I didn't have a good camera with a flash, so all my pics turned out aweful! It looks like you had a great time! I can't wait to go back sometime!

Great shots. Is it best to get scuba certified before going on a trip or not?
My wife and I would love to do this just to enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

We stayed on Kaanapali Beach, so most of our snorkeling was on the west/northwestern coast. We did head sound and spent the better part of a day at Makena Beach. In the afternoon, we headed down to the lava fields and stopped at La Perouse Bay. It was around 3pm and the wind/waves were kicking up so we didn't go in the water. I wanted to go back to spend a morning there, but never had another chance.

My wife and I got certified during our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. If I were to do it again, I'd do the class work local and plan the dives someplace warm.

Great pics  It's been quite a few years since I was there, your making me want to go back :D

I'd recommend getting certified for Scuba before a trip. After all, why spend your vacation in a class ;)

Wow, so glad I took a look at this. I took a picture almost exactly like that 5 years ago in Maui and had absolutely no idea what it was. I reached out to the RC community but never got an answer about what it was. It's been bugging me ever since.

Scott, I'm glad I helped you out. It's pretty amazing those come from a nudibranch.

CuttleKid - you're right on with that! Oops.
