If other nations like Canada can have free insurance for everyone, why can't we? Oh yea, it is because Americans hate paying taxes.
Are you serious? So, if I pay more taxes, I get "free" healthcare? What? Does that even make sense to you? If it does, it frightens me to death that you'll be caring for other peoples' health.
Health care in Canada is NOT free. What it is is socialized, meaning that EVERYONE pays for it, regardless of whether they use it or not. Paying an income tax rate of 40% or more (combined federal and provincial) equals very NOT free healthcare. Add to that the sales tax (14% in Ontario where I used to live) and if you think anything about healthcare there is free, you really don't have a clue how things work.
If I make $100,000 a year in Canada, I pay ~$34, 630 in income tax. If I spend half of my income, I pay another $9152 in sales tax. Do you even want to include proptery taxes in here? Looks like they average somewhere in the 1%/annual range. So, if I live in a $200,000 house, that's an additional $2,000 I'll be paying in property taxes. Not to mention gax cost and gas tax, which averages 40-50% of the price you pay. Should we include that?
So, in total, you'll be paying a minimum of $45,000 a year in taxes (45%+) for "free" healthcare. Since moving to the US, I pay less than half that rate in taxes, INCLUDING what I pay for my healthcare.
In all seriousness, move to Canada to become a doctor. Just remember that the government has the final say in how much you get paid. If you do that, then I'd consider you some sort of "good samaritan". Selling a few coral frags on the cheap certainly doesn't qualify...
