Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Hi,
Can i please get an ID of this crab? Its about an 1.5 inches big now. Is it safe or dangerous? Thanks.

These are on my only piece of live rock that i put in my new tank. I also found aiptasia also on this rock which I have treated. Is it a hydroid? Miniature versions of these are starting to show on by back glass where I do not clean on purpose and on pats of my power heads. The color of them on the second pic is off....they are definitely white.

Any help would be great

Thanks,

Just found this crawling up on the rock after lights out and am curious what it is and if it is reef safe? Took pics as I grabbed him from the DT and added to fuge.

I found these jetting across the surface of the water. They seemed to be attracted to the flash light I was using. They have it looks like 6 legs with two long antennas and a green body and very fast. Any idea what these could be?

This is one after I caught it and put it in a small bowl. I was luck it stood still long enough for the camera to focus.

wholagan, I can't really tell from that pic. Does it have serrated edges on the tentacles? If so, not aiptasia.

soul4surfin, doesn't look like hydroids. Maybe bryozoans or foraminiferans or even some type of algae.

Merasti, looks like a sea cucumber, but no idea what kind so no idea if it's reef safe. Most can release toxins when stressed or killed, some more than others.

sue, I'm sorry but that's way too small for me to tell. Maybe some kind of pod. Take a look here.

altralosix, I posted a link on your other thread, didn't know you had posted it here already! :)

Thanks Sushi. I thought that I would add that they are real flimsy and wave easily in the water. The images I see when I google bryozoans or foraminiferans don't really resemble what is in my tank.

Thanks,

I have some green star polyps that have been doing awesome up until yesterday. I had been doing some dosing such as hydrogen peroxide and then vodka and more recently a little lime water. So I thought maybe I was doing to much and that is why they had been closed up all day and today. However I noticed some little tentacles from under the body I guess is what you would of the polyps. So I did a brief freshwater dip with a little peroxide and they died.

Can someone id them for me and let me know if they were the problem, and what affect would the dip have on my polyps. They me hard to recognize so I'll describe them. They have a maroon body with gray and maroon striped legs.

Well I have id it as brittle sea stars, there were three of them as well as a small snail with a black shell that was on the rock as well.

The coral died or the starfish died? I suspect all the stuff you've been doing to the tank took a toll on a very hardy coral.

I was concerned that I was going overboard, so I backed off and everything has been doing well. I was struggling with the zoas that I have but they have been looking the best since I bought them about a month ago as well as the three other corals including the star polyps. But yesterday was when they staid closed up and when I got home today they were still closed and that was when I noticed the legs of the starfish. After doing the dip, there were four total starfish and I'm not sure if the coral is dead or not. Could I have killed the polyps from doing the dip?

Can i get an ID please ?

1. The upper box - Very minute. Mostly on the underside of the live rock. White tubes with orange feather like stuff coming out.

2. The lower box - Very minute as well. No tubes but red body with white tentacles like stuff that are rounded at the ends.

Thank you.
