25 gallon cube

Wishlist :

1 - Firefish goby
1 - Whiteray shrimp goby
1 - Blackray shrimp goby
1 - Benggai Cardinal (would this size tank be too small?)

Your bio-loading should be fine, but normally two shrimp gobies will not work, especially in a small tank, because they will not get along. Usually one will steal the other's shrimp (I do not know how). The exception is a mated pair.

How would they do if no shrimp were introduced? Would they still not get along? Would they do well without a shrimp?

I wondered about the bio-load. For what it's worth, I will have significant filtration via a 15 gallon sump, gfo and carbon reactors and an ASM G-2 skimmer. It's equipment from a previously torn down 90 gallon reef.

Thanks for the quick reply (in the we hours of the morning none-the-less!).

I have tried two in a 240 gallon tank (which is 8 feet long) and in the long run it did not work. A Shrimp goby without shrimp is not really a good idea as the commensal interaction is interesting and it gives the shrimp goby a sheltered existence.

Interesting. So if I subtract one shrimp goby, give the remaining one a symbiotic pistol shrimp, and add a purple firefish will everyone get along?

Absolutely. Personally, I always provide TWO pistol shrimp because the interaction is even more interesting.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the quick and obviously very knowledgeable response!

Any suggestions on a particular species of pistol shrimp? Do you provide two of the same species?

I usually provide alpheus randal since they are the ones common-ally available.

Hi I have two clown fish, McCosker wrasse and a yellow watchman goby in a 40 gallon. Could I add a bicolor blenny and a red scooter blenny?

Thanks a lot

optimally, a flasher wrasse requires a larger tank and definitely requires a tight cover as they are jumpers. The bicolor blenny is fine, the red scooter blenny (which is a dragonet not a blenny) is going to be difficult in that sized tank because they graze on copepods. Those clownfish, once sexually mature will be aggressive.

I have the following in my 6' 125g DT + 33g sump with lots of hidey holes in 190# LR:

1 medium (1.5") Yellowtail Damselfish (Chrysiptera parasema)
1 large (2.5") Randall's/Orange Stripe Shrimp/Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris randalli)
1 large (2.5") Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor)
2 medium (2") Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)
1 medium (1") Yellow Clown Goby (Gobiodon okinawae)
1 medium (2.5") Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

I'd like to get a fish that will eat nuisance crustaceans, snails and worms, but it needs to be small enough to leave my Sexy Shrimp alone. I was thinking about a Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse (Wetmorella tanakai). Would the Bicolor Blenny or others harass it to death, or would it be ok? Do they jump or just go cryptic?

Thank you.

That is a tough order. Those that will eat pyramid snails such as wrasses are also likely to eat small sexy shrimp. Additionally the problem is that the snails are nocturnal and the Wrasses are diurnal

Wetmorella species (there are three) are superb fish but will not help with troublesome pests. Since they are not in the same ecological niche as the blenny so there should be no interaction or hostility.

Thank you.

Always a pleasure . . .

They were paired in the LFS for over a week before I bought them, so I was hoping they were a M & F pair (I've seen your warnings on that). I don't know how to tell the difference, but they've been ok for about 4 months.

Looking at the three Wetmorella species, or Possum Wrasses, I saw that in nature they typically hang out in pairs. Can I try a pair, and if they don't like each other they'll be ok in 125g/190# LR?

Thank you in advance.

I do not know. I have had, over many years, all three species, but never two at a time. Both my tanks are large so it might work but I cannot extrapolate that downwards without guessing. Sorry.

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately I know of no way to tell the sex of firefish. I also do not know if they are even sexually dimorphic. I know that a week is not sufficient to tell and that months are required to see if it is going to work out. In a large enough tank, if they are not male plus female they will just hang out in different parts of the tank, but in small tanks it can become an issue.

56 gallon tank
36 x 18 x 20
30 gallon sump w fuge
2 occy/perc clowns (have 1)
1 sharknose goby (have)
1 CB angelfish
1 Lubbocks/Longfin Fiary wrasse or some type of flasher wrasse
1 purple firefish
1 aiptasia eating filefish
I know the filefish and angelfish may pick at corals, but I'm willing to take the risk....

36 x 18 x 20
30 gallon sump w fuge
2 occy/perc clowns (have 1) be sure any new clownfish is tiny
1 sharknose goby (have)
1 CB angelfish a roll of the dice with meaty LPS
1 Lubbocks/Longfin Fiary wrasse or some type of flasher wrasse
a flasher wrasse is a better fit, but be sure the tank is covered as they are prolific jumpers (egg crate will not keep them in)

1 purple firefish be sure to introduce first as they are easily intimidated
1 aiptasia eating filefish less risky than a dwarf angel for corals but still some risk
I know the filefish and angelfish may pick at corals, but I'm willing to take the risk....

For a mixed reef tank can you mix Scarlet Skunk Cleaner shrimps with Blood Red fire Shrimp and Pepermint Shrimps? If so, do you have to get only 1 or can you have multiples.

Also, what snails are best for a mixed reef tank.

Sorry, but this thread is only about marine fish compatibility. (All of the shrimps you mention can be mixed)
