90 gallon mixed reef tank. 13 months old. 90 pounds live rock.

current fish -

yellow watchman
bicolor blenny
2 Ocellaris Clownfish
mandarin
2 skunk shrimp
pistol shrimp
lots of hermits and snails
RBTA

looking for some more active fish.

Had bad luck with tangs for some reason (lost 2 kole and 1 yellow) had to get rid of the flame angel.

Considering adding:

fire fish and
2 Kaudern's Cardinal (Pterapogon kauderni)

open to other suggestions w/ following criteria.

1) 100% reef safe
2) 100% won't beat the crap out of other fish or inverts.
3) Hardy and will not die if you look at them wrong

another set of clowns would violate rule 2 correct?

Those would be fine assuming the Bangaii cardinals are a male plus female

Yes, in moderate sized tanks, only one pair of clownfish

Steve I have 180 gallon mixed reef tank that is a year and a half old. Current fish are one red velvet fairy wrasse, pair of B&W clownfish, one orange finned tang, one purple tang, one lawnmower blenny and one diamond goby sand sifter. All these fish get along and have been in the tank 8 to 14 months. What are your thoughts on adding an Achilles tang?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

The most likely one to be unhappy is any established zebrasoma tang, in your case the purple. My subjective odds are about 50/50 for success.

Thanks in advance.

Blank slate

Lots of experience with fw so not new to keeping fish, just salt.
So I am willing to adjust whatever as long as end results are happy fish in a fowlr tank! In the process of 75g, 50lbs live rock, I think 29g sump, skimmer of some type, heater and controler. Still reading about equipment...
I would really like a lion fish of some type as a center piece fish. I am familiar with raising breeding WC FW fish, finicky eaters, water quality all that goes with challenging fish.
Is a Lion fish unrealistic beginner Saltwater fish?
Also what other fish would you add with it? I know I'm sure as with most predators what goes in their mouths will... again unless you advise against a Lion

I've been reading up on the lion fish also and found that I will likely go with a Fu Manchu lion fish... They are the smallest and therefore less likely to eat all but the smallest fish in the tank.

I'd like to have some clowns as well (with anemone)

Not sure what else would look good and be compatible...

some helpful suggestions would be nice.

I have a 120g tank, not yet setup and it has a sump but the specs on all that I'm unfamiliar with. I want to get my fish, invert and coral LIST going (I want a mixed reef) so I know what kind of equipment I will need... My research right now is on rock and substrate... but it would help to know what I'm gonna put in the tank. So far we have decided on the Fu Manchu and a pair of clowns (clarkii)

was sorta helpful, yet not... as it doesn't contain all fish....

Sorry, I do not provide compatibility analysis on aggressive fish tanks.

Sorry, I do not provide compatibility analysis on aggressive fish tanks. A lionfish makes a great centerpiece fish. But only with no tank mates.

Thanks for all the information provided. Has been a school.

I have a 125 gallon tank with 30 sump. Equipment is SRO 1000SSS, Chiller, GFO/Carbon Reactor, Bi-Weekly water changes. Livestock is Orangestripe Diamond Goby, Desjardini Sailfin Tang, 2 Firefish (Orange and Purple) and a Lyretail Anthias. Corals are Bubble, Hammers, Leathers, Torch, Mushrooms, Brain, Elegance. Montipora.

The Sailfin Tang is new and small. I have read your advise to not put 2 Zebrasomas together but i am very interested to aquire a Tomini and a Powder Blue. Do you think i should get it ASAP due to that the Sailfin is new and small or i should avoid both?

Thanks for your great help and advise.

A sailfin tang is marginal for your tank size. I personally would not add any additional tangs, but if you must add one, the Tomini is a better choice.

You have to realize that a sailfin tang grows very large and the RC recommended tank size is 240 gallons which is twice your current tank.

Yepppp. you got me thinking.. Probably i will keep him for a while becuase he is small and beautiful fish and then replace him with the Powder Blue or a Foxface with the Tomini. All in small size.

Was also thinking to get 2 Crawberry Anthias but the feeding requirements for me is dificult becuase i am not in the house all day.

I love Carberryi anthias but anthias do best with multiple feedings per day because their metabolism and energy level is high. Long term, once per day will not properly sustain them.

Ok... If i get the Anthias i will also buy an automatic feeder. Love small fishes . That way ithe tank don't seem to crowded...

Thanks once again...

Automatic feeders do well with pellets. However, many anthias will not eat pellets.

I understand your position on aggressive fish. my 1st concern was to make sure the Lion would be at home in a tank of that size. From what I have read I believe so. I just think they are beautiful. Do you see this as a poor choice for a beginner if it were alone?
