55 Gallon with about 60 lbs of live rock and about 1 1/2" live sand. No sump. Fluval 306 for mechanical filtration, as a sump isn't an option right now. Haven't added a skimmer yet, but will before adding fish. Quad T5 lighting fixture. Not fully cycled yet, but not planning on adding fish yet anyways, testing at 0 ammonia and all other peramiters are still in check. Have a HOB aquaclear that I plan on converting to a small refugium. Plan on fish and soft corals. I'm at least 2 weeks away from adding fish.

Currently have 1 blue devil damsel on loan from LFS to help with cycling. They will take him back, or I could keep him. He's probably too aggressive in the long run.

I'm thinking of a mix that looks something like:

1 or 2 Banggai Cardinals
1 or 2 Ocellaris Clownfish
1 Dwarf Flame Angel
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Royal Gamma

And I would love a yellow tang, but I'm leaning towards thinking that a 55 isn't going to keep it happy.

As far as the CUC, I really want a couple of nice shrimp and am leaning towards hermit crabs. Any suggestions for a good CUC for this set-up?

Any other 'worker fish' I should consider?

Am I going to need a jump screen with any of these choices? They seem to get tricky when you don't have a sump and you have equipment hanging inside the tank. :(

This is my 1st ever saltwater set-up. I've kept freshwater fish for years, and yes, I see that this is a whole new ball game lol.

55 Gallong Saltwater Stocking Recommendations

55 Gallong Saltwater Stocking Recommendations

I'm starting up a 55 gallon marine tank initially as a FOWLR system with the intention of making it into a reef system with soft corals, mushrooms, & polyps down the road. I currently have 25lbs of Pukani + 10lbs of Fiji + 30 lbs of sand. My filtration will be a combination of a CPR bak-pak 2R hang-on-back protein skimmer and 2 power heads pushing 170 gph each.

As far as stocking I'm considering:

1 royal gramma
1 canary blenny
1 pajama cardinal
1 falco hawkfish

What do you think about the above fish with my setup? My intention was to a have a mix of methodically swimmer (pajama cardinal), active middle of the water column swimmer (canary blenny), active next to the rock swimmer (royal gramma), and a bottom swimmer with some personality (falco hawkfish).

Yes, he is aggressive. And it is a poor way to cycle a tank; your LFS should know better.

I'm thinking of a mix that looks something like:

1 or 2 Banggai Cardinals for two, must be a male plus female and for best odds of success, tank bred
1 or 2 Ocellaris Clownfish
1 Dwarf Flame Angel
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Royal Gamma

And I would love a yellow tang, but I'm leaning towards thinking that a 55 isn't going to keep it happy.

That is correct, your tank is not larghe enough

While all fish can jump, your selection does not have a propensity for jumping.

No problem except as noted

I am setting up a 25 gallon rimless frag tank. I want some fish in there to keep my nitrates up and to control algae, possibly pests. I am concerned about jumpers....

My original thoughts was a pair of ocillaris clowns and a lawn mower blenny... I don't recall either as being big jumpers... I was going to do a wrasse but I believe they are jumpers. Any other suggestions?

While any fish can jump these are not considered prolific jumpers

Brand new

Brand new

Hello all I'm brand new to the hobby and to the forum. Had a 55gal freshwater but it wasn't involved enough for me. So in the past month I've rebuilt the stand to support a fuge. Done tons and tons of reading. Upgraded to a 75 gal. 20gal sump. Cpr90 overflow box. Reef octopus nwb110 skimmer. Aquatic life 3700L pump. 48" 4x54w t5 lights 2 actinic. 2 10000k. Everything is plumbed and running tap right now for wet test and consistency. Soo... I plan on running 100lbs of live rock. 100lbs sand for a 3" sand bed. I plan to keep coral probably easy beginner stuff. But fish I'm thinking 2 clowns, 1 yellow Hawaii tang,1 blue tang, 2 carpenters flasher wrasse, 1 blue spotted puffer (optional), and 2 kauderns cardinal fish....also random snails.... Any ideas, advice, suggestions, help? Thank you in advance..

For some reason I am unable to quote your post. However, your tank is not large enough for a pair of flasher wrasses, the tang you are looking at, or any type of puffer.

Thank you that's good to know. What are your opinions of my setup? Does it look I'm on the right track as far as that goes?

This thread is different than virtually all others (sorry about the pun) because it is only answered by Reef Central Staff and is only about Marine Fish Compatibility. Equipment and related questions can be asked in a separate thread elsewhere.

Alright alright alright thanks for the help on the fish

I have a 40B that is fully cycled, skimmer rated for 75 gallons, 20 gallon sump, live rock/sand. Plan is for a soft coral tank and the following fish.

I have a glass top that covers the tank tightly but the sump has plenty of breathing room for gas exchange, if needed I can switch over to a 1/4in screen top.

2 true perc clowns
1 helfrichi fire fish
1 tail spot blenny
1 Court jester goby
1 Kaudern's Cardinal *tank bred
1 skunk cleaner shrimp

should be fine

May as well get in on the fun.

I have a 75g with 70# live rock cycling. 36gal sump, ~20gal water volume in it. Reef Octopus 150 skimmer. Planning FOWLR with maybe some hardy corals like mushrooms but I'm primarily interested in the fish.

Pair of ocelleris clowns
1 or pair of bangai cardinals
1 or pair of firefish
Red banded goby and pistol shrimp
A red lined wrasse
A saddle valentini or blue spot toby puffer
Possibly a white tail bristletooth tang or a dwarf angel
A red mandarin after the tank is well established (will have a refugium)

I'm guessing the puffer would cause problems for the shrimp so if it came between the two I'd skip the shrimp.

I'll be keeping a screen on top of the tank as well.

Pair of ocelleris clowns
1 or pair of bangai cardinals tank bred for best results
1 or pair of firefish one only unless they are a bonded pair
Red banded goby and pistol shrimp
A red lined wrasse
A saddle valentini or blue spot toby puffer
Possibly a white tail bristletooth tang or a dwarf angel either will work, the dwarf angel may be a bit better
A red mandarin after the tank is well established (will have a refugium)

I'm guessing the puffer would cause problems for the shrimp so if it came between the two I'd skip the shrimp. No Problems for the pistol shrimp but for your other fish as they nip on the fins of tank mates

I'll be keeping a screen on top of the tank as well.

Curious why you say the dwarf would be better? May help influence my decision. Yes the bonded pair for firefish and tank bred cardinals.

Guess if the puffer becomes too rambunctious I'll have to find him another home, but it is definitely a fish I would love to keep.

Flame angels come from a variety (primarily 3) of locations. The coloration can be incredibly brilliant. Also in your sized tank, the tank size is more than adequate whereas for any tang, it is minimal.
