I'm going back and forth on what I want to do for my desktop tank, so Steve I have a curiosity that I'd like your thoughts on to help me narrow things down:

My tank is a custom-built 15g that I made wide and long - it is 36x12 internal for a base dimension. However, this left me shallow (8" water column). When considering the space a fish needs, do you consider overall volume more important (3 dimensional space) or lengthwise swimming room?

Both. For active fish, length is much more important than any other dimension. For reclusive fish such as any of the possum wrasses, your dimension would be fine.

2 clown what species?
Coral beauty
Blue tang P. hepatus requires a much larger tank
Emerald crab
Blue leg hermits
Snails

As those who follow this thread know I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. I am always happy to analyze any stocking plan, however, as long as tank size and stocking list are provided.

Hello again Steve,
Am going to be upgrading to a 120 with a 50 gallon sump. Lots of live rock, some macroalgae and mixed corals, like what I have now. I was wondering if along with my present fish ( see below ) I could add a Lineatus Wrasse, a fathead anthias and a dispar anthias and a black cap Basslet.

Thank you.

Should be fine

Jawfish, Yellowhead (Opistognathus aurifrons) x2
Firefish, Purple (Nemateleotris decora) x1
Lined Dartfish (Ptereleotris grammica) x2
Court Jester Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) x2
Striped Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes) x2
mated pair of Bangghaii Cardinals (Pterapogon kauderni)
Yasha White Ray Goby (Stonogobiops yasha) & Randall's Shrimp (Alpheus randalli) pair
Yellow Coris Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus)
Looks fine to me.

A 120 gal. tank (60"Lx18"Wx26"H) is now the new plan :xlbirthday:.
Given the larger size could I add some or all of the following:

Green Clown Goby (Gobiodon atrangulatus) x2
Zebra Barred Dartfish (Ptereleotris zebra) x4
Blue Gudgeon Goby (Ptereleotris heteroptera) x2
Snake Blenny (Xiphasia setifer) x1 (if one can be found for sale)
Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) x1
Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula) x1 (listed as semi-aggressive)
and possibly
Black Axil Chromis (Chromis atripectoralis) x5
OR
Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis) x5 if large enough tank and not too many fish already.

This seems like a large number of fish for a 5 foot tank (to me) but many of the fish appear to remain very slender fish (not having much volume) and wondering if combined with an over-sized skimmer may be possible.

Thanks for all your help Steve.

Generally fine, but I suspect the group of chromis will over time become only one.

stocking list is fine; I annotated the only fish you can keep multiples

[welcom]

A couple of question/ changes.
Original list
Firefish - Nemateleotris magnifica
Green Clown Goby - Gobiodon atrangulatus
Combtooth Blenny - Scartella cristata
Pajama Cardinal - Sphaeramia nematoptera multiple
Nemo - Amphiprion ocellaris Two, male plus female
Bartletts Anthias - Pseudanthias bartlettorum multiple
Carpenters Wrasse - Paracheilinus carpenter male plus multiple females
Foxface - Siganus vulpinus
After reading close to 800 pages (so far) of this thread I noticed your dislike?? for the Bartletts Anthias and was wondering if I would be better off getting Dispars - Pseudanthias dispar - instead. The online store I am dealing with, in Canada, can not get resplendent or carberryi. Also would I be able to add a Alpheus randalli and Amblyeleotris randalli to my stocking list?
The lone firefish looks tiny by itself in the dt. Have the clown goby going through tt in quarantine now, no chances!!
Thanks for all that you do here and with your blogs they are very informative, and your patience after reading so many posts is amazing!

After reading close to 800 pages (so far) of this thread I noticed your dislike?? for the Bartletts Anthias My issue with this species is that females tend to all become male over time; as a single, no issue but for multiples, Dispars would be better. I do favor resplendent or carberry but they do require multiple feedings per day and was wondering if I would be better off getting Dispars - Pseudanthias dispar - instead. The online store I am dealing with, in Canada, can not get resplendent or carberryi. Also would I be able to add a Alpheus randalli and Amblyeleotris randalli to my stocking list? Yes, no problem.

You have read all of this thread? Wow!

thinking of adding a Harlequin tusk, but want to know if they eat smaller fish that are already established within a tank? I have 14 wrasses that have been in my tank for about 5 months; the Tusk would be the final fish added. Are the wrasses safe?

No, they are not safe.

Looking to upgrade my mixed reef from a 50 to a 120 (48" x 24" x 24"). Current sock:
Purple Firefish
Mated Pair B/W Clowns
Carpenter Wrasse
Possum Wrasse
Longfin Fairy Wrasse
Starry Blennie
Yellow Assessor Basslet
I would like to add:
Kole Tang
One Spot Foxface
Flame Angel (assuming I can find one that is reef safe)
Ant issues with the three new additions?

Purple Firefish
Mated Pair B/W Clowns
Carpenter Wrasse
Possum Wrasse
Longfin Fairy Wrasse will be aggressive as it matures
Starry Blennie
Yellow Assessor Basslet
I would like to add:
Kole Tang
One Spot Foxface if hungry, this is not reef safe so feed well as they will eat corals for their zooxanthellae
Flame Angel (assuming I can find one that is reef safe) there is no such thing as a reef safe dwarf angel long term
Ant issues with the three new additions?

Thanks Steve, will do this list, most likely without the Black Axil Chromis. Will have to see it stocked with the full list. It'll probably look over-stocked with the list anyway.
