I have a 125 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump and I was thinking of plumbing a 40 gallon tank into the system so I could add a few fish that are not coral friendly. My current tank has the following live stock:

This tank does have a lid on it and a canopy, would a ten inch canopy be enough to not need a lid? I would keep the overflows covered so the fish could not jump in them if I removed the lid.

Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens)
Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)
Occelaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)
Diamond Goby (Valenciennea puellaris)
Blue/Green Chromis (Chromis viridis)
Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) needs a lid

Would like to add these to the 125
Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara)
Mccoskers Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) needs a lid

Red Mandarin (Synchiropus cf. splendidus)

Is there room for more fish here? small fish, yes, larger fish, especially tangs, no

Would like to put these in the 40 gallon two dwarf angels is pushing it
Lemonpeel Angel (Centropyge flavissima)
Flame Angel (Centropyge loriculus)
Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto)
Orange Stripe Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris randalli)
Clown Goby, Yellow (Gobiodon okinawae)

Should I add both angel fish last and at the same time?

Is there room for more fish in this tank? no

Thanks again for your help

What would be a better size for these two?
Lemonpeel Angel (Centropyge flavissima)
Flame Angel (Centropyge loriculus)

I haven't purchased a tank for this so I can get bigger at this point, this is a tank to keep my wife happy so it's important :) (I know it is a little off the topic of this thread, but would appreciate your input)

Oh I do actually ahve another question, if I was to get another 40 gallon breeder as a refugium and plumbed it into the same sump could I put a pair of clowns in it, like Premnas biaculeatus, Amphiprion perideraion, or Amphiprion frenatus?

Thanks

A fifty should work after it matured with live rock and algae

For aggressive clowns, a 40 gallon would work. While more water volume is a good thing, be very careful about your quarantine protocol and carefully QT all fish

Thanks

Steve, I came to you for a list for a 70 gallon a while ago if you remember, unfortunately, ran into a setback and will be going with a different tank size in the future. The system is 127 gallons DSPS (with lid). Introduced in this order:

1 Amblyeleotris randalli
2 Elacatinus oceanops (pair)
2 Elacatinus macrodon (pair)
2 Elacatinus puncticulatus (pair)
3 Ecsenius stigmatura
1 Assessor flavissimus
4 Pseudanthias bartlettorum

Hello all, first post here and I'm new to saltwater tanks. I'm going to be setting up my first tank within the next month. I have a 46 gallon bowfront tank, tank dimensions are 36Lx 16.25W x20H. Im starting out with a FOWLR and may eventually add a few coral down the road. Anyways going to be cycling it with 45lbs of live rock +40 lbs of live sand. I was wondering about my fish selection and if this will be too much for my tank to handle. I want.

2-Ocellaris Clown Fish
1- Yellow Dwarf Angel
1 Green/Blue Chromis
1 Goby
1-Banggai Cardinal Fish
a couple of shrimp and some dwarf hermit crabs

I know with a new tank I would have to gradually add fish. just wondering If thats too much and what would be a good order to add those fish? Thanks.

I am concerned abut your propensity for multiples of the same species. Pairing fish as a true pair is difficult. Bioload is fine.

Your stocking list is fine. I would add the dwarf angel last.

Thanks. How many fish can I safely add at first? Also for long term could I safely add a few more fish than listed or would that be pushing it for my system? From what I've read you can't stock a marine aquarium like you can a freshwater.

If you are in this for the long run, you also need to develop a quarantine protocol. My blog has one for your perusal. Yes, stocking a marine aquarium is not like a fresh water aquarium. Your bioload will eventually support a couple more small fish but go slowly! Nothing good happens quickly in an aquarium.

List 2.0:

1 Amblyeleotris randalli
1 Elacatinus oceanops
1 Elacatinus macrodon
1 Elacatinus puncticulatus
1 Ecsenius stigmatura
1 Assessor flavissimus
4 Pseudanthias bartlettorum
3 Female Halichoeres melanurus

Anything wrong here Steve? Thanks. - Nick

should be fine.

I am setting up a 65 gallon with a 20 gallon sump and lots of live rock. It also has a canopy and screen tops to prevent jumping

The fish I have are:

2 percula clowns
Red scooter blenny
green clown goby
neon goby

I'm looking to add

pair of yellow headed jawfish
Blue reef chromis-I have heard the kill each other till 1 is left, can I just start with 1?
Purple fire fish

I would also like a pair of small pistol shrimp with goby. But I have not been able to find much info on them being ok with the jawfish. I am thinking a yasha goby and candy pistol shrimp

Thank you for your time :)

We are trying to come up with a stocking plan for a 50 breeder for my parents. The list they have given me so far includes the following.

1 warpaint clown goby
1 gold lined cleaner or 1 blue neon goby
1 royal gramma
1 scooter blenny
1 fire fish
1 watchman goby/ pistol shrimp pair

They were also interested in a bicolor blenny but I was unsure if it would get along with the gramma. They are wanting a peaceful tank and don't want any possible coral nippers. I am more of a coral guy and haven't put much consideration into the fish side of the hobby, so be gentle. Thanks for your help!

should be ok as the goby will protect the shrimp(s)

Copperband Butteryflyfish (definitely want to try when I have more experience)
Six Line Wrasse (I hear they can be very mean)
Powderblue Tang (Not sure if I want such a boss in my tank, but they are great looking fish)
Foxface Lo (It says with caution for a reef tank, but I might give it a shot in the future)
Purple Dottyback (I hear they can be very mean)

Hi, I just started my first saltwater tank and have been cycling the tank for a little over 3 weeks now. Here are some details about my tank: Glass 29 Gallon tank, Marineland C-220 canister filter, Coralife 50/50 6 Watt light, 1 Theo heater, 1 JNS VS-1 Aquaria protein skimmer, 1 Koraline nano 425 gph powerhead, 30 lb live rock, 30 lb live sand.

During the curing process I never really saw a spike in ammonia (I used cured/ almost cured rock as well as old dry live rock) but I have been testing the water recently and have a 0 reading for both ammonia and nitrite and between 0-5ppm of nitrate. Once my nitrate levels drop to 0 I would like to add the following fish/ inverts to the tank to create an active and peaceful reef tank.

Fish (In order of how I would introduce them)
-2 Ocellaris Clownfish
-1 Six Line Wrasse or 1 Blue/Green Reef Chromis ( Im worried about the wrasse eating my shrimp but I would love to get the wrasse if possible)
-1 Wheelers Shrimp Goby or 1 Pink Spotted Watchman Goby

Inverts (I hope this is not overkill)
-5 Zebra Hermit Crabs
-1 Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
-1 Peppermint Shrimp
-1 Tiger Snapping Shrimp (to pair with one of the gobys)
-1 Emerald Crab
-2 Cerith snails
-2 Nerite Snails
-2 Trochus snails
-1 Blue Tuxedo Urchin (Really would like this guy in my tank)

I would like to eventually add a number of corals to the tank so I have tried to take this into account (I will increase the lighting and add another 425 gph powerhead).

I would appreciate any help/ suggestions that you may have. I am still not 100% set on the fish selection so I am open to other fish suggestions.

Thank you so much for your help!

Firefish x2
Ocellaris Clownfish Tank Bred or Black Onyx x2
Diamond Watchman Goby
Yellow Watchman Goby
Midas Blenny or Lawnmower/Sailfin/Algae Blenny
Lyretail Anthias x1 M x3 F You might consider carberry or resplendant
Blue/Hippo Tang the more tangs you have, the greater the chance for aggression in the long run
Tomini Tang / Flame Fin
Sailfin Tang Desjardini
the more tangs you have, the greater the chance for aggression in the long run
White Tail Bristletooth Tang
Kole Yellow Eye Tang
Yellow Coris Wrasse
Melanurus Wrasse
2 or 3 Flasher or Fairy Wrasses (please give recommendations) flasher wrasses are behaviorally similar, consider a harem of a male and 2-3 females
Yellow Tang the more tangs you have, the greater the chance for aggression in the long run, yellow tangs once established will not tolerate new comers

the tangs I annotated are the ones more likely to be aggressive once mature

Possible future list, space permitting
Flame Angel Fish (definitely want to try in the future, though I hear they are 50/50 with eating coral) 50/50 is optimistic
Copperband Butteryflyfish (definitely want to try when I have more experience) they need peaceful tank mates or a much larger tank, Australian ones are more likely to be successful
Six Line Wrasse (I hear they can be very mean) aggressive
Powderblue Tang (Not sure if I want such a boss in my tank, but they are great looking fish)
Foxface Lo (It says with caution for a reef tank, but I might give it a shot in the future)
Purple Dottyback (I hear they can be very mean) very aggressive
Royal Gamma Basslet (maybe in place of the dotty back)
Carpenter Flasher Wrasse
Jawfish Yellowhead

Inverts excellent
