Thanks, Steve. Would you be able to recommend a goby?
Thanks, Steve. Would you be able to recommend a goby?
The setup: I have a recently started 75g with a 20g sump, about 10g fuge. An in sump 6"pinwheel octo skimmer, mag 7 for return and 2x750 koralias. There is 80lb pukani dry rock from BRS I have now "seeded" or "cooked" for about 4 months, and about 10lbs of LR. 120lbs aragonite sand I got from the cultured reef online (Which i'm super thrilled with, It's prewashed and it hardly clouded my tank). For lighting I have 2 x AI sols.
Currently Stocke: As of now I have 7 hermits (blue legged, and several scarlets). The tank has been set up for about 4 weeks, and a friend gave me some bam bams, buttons and xenia to see how it did. A week later, they've all showed expansion, and some growth. The sols work beautifully.
I'm ready for fish.
I would love a pair of clowns, but if I can get them to host a nem that would be icing on the cake.
Clowns will associate with what they please (the anemone hosts, the clowns associate) so the best chance for this to happen is to get one that your species naturally associates with
Suggestions for this? I know certain species host more readily in captivity. I love the look of percs but I know these aren't on that list of often to host. I like maroons a lot.
Maroons are very aggressive and will want to own nearly your entire tank
Getting two juviniles of any clown that I end up getting is my goal. Any input for maroons? Does anyone have experience or have found them particularl bullies or being quick to host?
Note above
Also, with clowns, does anyone think I should have a different FIRST fish? It would make sense to me that adding a known to be territorial fish to a tank as the FIRST fish would only encourage their territoriality within the 75.
Any suggestions on a better first fish would be great too. I'm fairly open at this point. If I could I would like a longnose hawk, jawfish, and something on the smaller size for color, and or a smaller tang. I like the looks of yellow eyed Koles.
should be fine, ideally last fish added
Granted this is all just what ive seen and liked, or is on a wish list
Also, would a longnose eat a cleaner shrimp? yes they will
Thanks in advance, all! actually this thread is answered only by RC staff, in this case, me. And it is not really a discussion thread.
I have a 29 gallon tank with about 40lbs of live rock and 2 Percula Clownfish, I plan on adding corral. Wanted to know what you guys would suggest I get as far as other fish that would be okay with those clownfish.
Stocking check since last time (added a few fish already):
35g long (35x12x18) reef tank with LPS, running Reef Octopus HOB skimmer, AC70 with carbon and purigen
Current stock:
2 juvenile occellaris clownfish
1 yellowline neon goby
1 blue assessor
Planning:
Midas or tailspot blenny either is fine
Blue or green chromis either is fine
Would this work in my aquarium or am I too heavily stocked? Would there be any harassment issues other than the clowns?
Once the clownfish are sexually mature, bonded, and mating, they will become much more aggressive and will want to own that sized tank but otherwise your stocking list is peaceful
Thank you Steve.
I know you said the nem is the one to host in the relationship, is there a variety of clown that it more readily, or has more success accepting? (Big question seeing as there are so many nems, so many clowns and combinations possible, but I will obviously do my best to chose a pair suggested or that is understood to relate). I now understand maroons are among the most aggressive, how would a tomato or clarks clownfish compare? Like I mentioned I would love a pair, and the symbiosis with a nem is a goal as well.
After reading some threads, i'm curious if having a nem FIRST, then adding clowns down the road would be a better option as far as success rates (also allowing any other fish previously added, possibly a better chance of not being as harassed by the clowns).
Best information on clownfish can be obtain from Clownfish by Joyce Wilkerson which is available from Amazon.com and others.
That being said, what fish would be a good candidate as first to go into the tank?
I like yellow head jawfish, kole tangs, hawkfish, maybe an anthia or bicolor blenny.
Also you said a longnose will snack up cleaner shrimp (I would imagine a blenny then too), how about a flame hawkfish? I just like how hawks perch throughout the tank and their personality.
Thanks again
29 AGA standard tank. 25lbs LR, 40 lbs LS. No sump, skimmer being bought next week or two. Currently have 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 bangaii cardinal and 1 misbar clown. Would like:
1 flame angel no problem
1 mystery wrasse or 1 neon dotty back? both are aggressive, the neon dottyback especially so
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I wanted to say thanks for all of the advice you have given me on stocking in the past so far. Thanks!!!
55g FOWLR 60lbs LR 1.5" LS HOB Emperor 400 (for now)
Stock
2 Ocellaris Clowns (2")
Coral Banded Shrimp can take fish
Diamondback Watchman Goby (4")
2 Spider Crab (don't know their species name) Arrow crabs can and will take fish and two will become one as they will try to kill each other
Thorny Star and Sand Sifting Star will starve to death
Other clean up crew..halloween crabs, turbos I do not recommend crabs in any form as they are opportunistic feeders and will kill snails
Going on LFS advice with the pickups
probably need to check on RC first as their track record is not so good so far
but have noticed some major aggressiveness out of the goby towards the banded shrimp and also (now that they're bigger) some swiping aggressiveness out of the above mentioned spider crab towards all 3 fish, literally sticking one of the clowns today.
I'm definitely concerned as I don't care for the unhappiness of my tank mates and have read your impressive insight into others' tanks. Have I got some incompatibilities going on here?
I'd like to add more fish like a Wrasse or flame angel but I'm not so certain about my LFS anymore. Also thought about trading out the Diamondback Watchman for a couple small Mandarin Goby's.
Any advice is good advice.
Thanks
My tank details are below in my signature. I currently have a mated pair of tomato clowns, a mandarin, a dozen or so snails and 7 hermit crabs. I am hoping to add a shrimp/goby pair. A copper band butterfly and a foxface lo. It will be a predominantly LPS tank. How is this stock? Too heavy without a skimmer? If its fine, what order would you add them all in and how long would you wait between adding them?
Thank you in advance.
