Just picked up a 75 yesterday. It has a 20g sump, and I'll be running a filter sock.

I'm going SPS only.

Ocellaris Clown
Hi Fin Red Banded Goby
Yellowstriped Cardinal Fish
Court Jester Goby
Blue Reef Chromis
Firefish

Too much? Just enough? Thoughts?

About right. Introduce the firefish early on

40 breeder
I want to put one fuzzy dwarf lion and then move my semi-aggressive creolefish (ruby anthias) from my 100gallon mixed reef to the breeder.

So it will consist of fuzzy dwarf and creolefish

Well the recommended minimum for a fuzzy dwarf lionfish is 50 gallons. A creolefish (which can potentially reach 13 inches) in a 40 gallon tank????

Me again!

Ok well I haven't always taken your advice Steve...

But anyways!

Here is what resides in the tank as of today: (tank is in my sig)

Gold Neon Goby
Hector's goby
2 black snowflake clowns
Dwarf cherub pygmy angel
2 peppermint shrimp
a bunch o snails
1 emerald crab

2 days ago i removed:

blue spot rabbit fish - gorgeous, but as he was approaching 4", time he left. Never had an issue with this guy, I got him to help control macro algae in the display which he did an awesome job, just never touched bubble algae

hoeven's wrasse - as a noob I though i saw flatworms so i immediately went out and bought him... a PITA blowing up the sand and any corals placed on it when he wanted to sleep. And he ate every feather duster he could reach and not sure what else. He was also approaching 4" so time to go.

Now...

I am looking at 2 options to add a fish in order of preference:

Dracula Goby
or
Yellow Watchman Goby

OR
add a pistol shrimp along with each goby.

I already have the 2 gobies but neither is a sand dweller, so I hope I'd be ok with these choices. Not sure on getting the goby/shrimp combo as I have heard some bad things about pristol shrimp later in life.. Also not sure how destructive these fish would be to corals etc on the sand though I think due to their size these guys I could live with. Does the fish/shrimp combo add anything to the fishes longevity or "perceived happiness" in the aquarium?

I have to leave room for the eventual temporary rabbitfish/foxface if my macro comes back, but no more wrasse for me.. mebbe when I can upgrade to 150g+...

The pistol shrimp is harmless and does improve the quality of life of the associated goby. But you cannot have two commensal gobies in a small tank

40g breeder with 40g sump. About 60-65g total water volume.

2 Helfrichi firefish
Royal Gramma
Blue-Green Chromi
Starry Blenny

Maybe a pair of Kaudern's? or Red spot glass cardinals? or think I'm at my limit with the 5? Also is the order good?

Thanks

While a pair of tank raised Kaudern's cardinal fish is doable I think you would be happier with, say a single possum wrasse or other single small interesting fish.

I tried a possum wrasse in other tank and never see him. Hmm what other small fish would work can't think... Anyway thx

There is value in fish that are somewhat cryptic as opposed to always out and about. In any case, as those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. I will be happy to reevaluate any potential stocking list however.

Lawnmower Blennie

Lawnmower Blennie

Hi,

I'm a little too late for this, but I could use advice on a new fish that I just purchased please. I bought a Lawnmower Blennie on Saturday. Yesterday evening the entire middle third of it's body lost it's color and turned white, and it was breathing heavily. It was dead this morning, and the middle third was now a dark blue/black color. I asked Premium Aquatics what type of disease that is and wanted to inform them of their stock quality. They didn't know what it would be. I have some live rock in the quarantine tank along with the Frogspawn I purchased"¦ what do I need to do to make sure I don't spread the illness? Will I ever be able to put the LR back in the display? How long should I wait to move the Frogspawn so it doesn't carry some of the disease on it into the display?

I drip acclimated. Used water from the display. Used live rock and sand from display. It seemed to acclimate fine. Had lots of hair algae for it to eat. Water parameters are good with nitrate around 5.

Thanks for the help.

this thread is only about marine fish compatibility with the environment you are providing and with other inhabitants. Best forum for you would be the fish disease forum where many answers should be provided.

I have a 35 gal tank with one maroon clown (4 inches) and a 1 1/2 inch damsel fish. We'd like to add a third fish, but don't want it to die. Any suggestions?

You have one very aggressive fish and one aggressive fish. I doubt that you can add a fish and have long term success with those tank mates. However, as those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons.

Hi Steve!

You gave me input on a potential stocking list for my new 29 gallon reef a few weeks ago. It is currently cycling and I am continuing to research livestock. This was my original list:

Inverts
Skunk cleaner shrimp (maybe 2)
Peppermint shrimp (maybe 2)
Sexy shrimp (2-3)
Porcelain crab
Various snails
Clam (after the tank is mature, if ever)

Corals
Mostly LPS, some zoas

Fish
1 shrimp goby with 1 or a pair of pistols (S. yasha or S. nematodes)
1 small wrasse (P. ataenia, W. tanakai or W. albofasciata)
1 Tail spot blenny (E. stigmatura)
1 tank bred Ocellaris clown
1 Royal gramma (G. loreto) or Gold assessor (A. flavissimus) or tank bred Orchid dottyback (P. fridmani)

My question is whether a Plectranthias inermis could be substituted for any of the above. It seems to have at least a half dozen different common names, Geometric Pygmy Basslet/Perchlet/Hawkfish and various permutations. Most of the information I could find said they are reef safe but one said it may bother small crabs and shrimp. I'm wondering if this was just a generic message since "hawkfish" was in the name.

The fish is beautiful and appears to exhibit interesting behavior but I would not want to put my inverts at risk.

Looking forward to your opinion and thank you in advance for your help! This is my favorite thread and the first one I check each day!

Unfortunately, shrimp will be at risk. Yes, they are very nice fish, but especially in a small tank they are most likely shrimp unsafe

That is unfortunate. Another fish to put on my wish list for the future!

Thank you!

Yes, keeping marine fish is always a trade off of interesting characteristics and undesirable characteristics. The trick is finding fish whose undesirable characteristics are irrelevant to your particular circumstances.

Hi, my 40g been up for few months now and it still has my 2 previously selected fish, sixline wrasse and starry blenny and doing great together. I just need one more addition. My selected one: Orchid Dottyback, will this work with the fish I have? thanks

The blenny will not care, the sixline may. Of course the sixline is likely not to like most fish added.
