I had the chance to get a free gold assessor last week & passed it up because I didn't think 12 g was big enough & wanted to wait until the 28 is up. Just want to make sure I made the right decision & if one can fit I always have the chance when they come in again.

It is difficult to predict definitively. The larger the tank, the more that aggressive fish, especially small non-predators, will be able to live peaceably with tank mates. In a moderately sized tank such as yours, perceived ecological niche overlaps are exacerbated and territory becomes "relevant" to a fish. When fish feel "crowded", they will alleviate the crowding situation, usually by taking out a fish that they feel impinges on their "territory". That is why for long term satisfaction with a tank, I always try to insure peaceful interactions. People tend to enjoy tanks that do not embody stressful occupants.

Hello. I have a 38 gallon tank with about 55 lbs live rock, a RO hob skimmer, and 2 Koralia 750 for circulation. It's mostly zoas and palys and mushrooms, with a few leathers. I have 1 Ocellaris clownfish about 1 1/4" that's been the only fish in the tank for about 4 months. I have 2 Firefish in QT that will be going in the tank if hopefully 6 weeks. After that, I'd like to add a Banggai cardinal, a Pajama cardinal, and a Chalk bass. Will there be any issues with this list. Thanks.
The only issue is that unless the firefish are a bonded m/f pair, only one will survive long term. It will take a few months before you will find out if one or two will survive. Firefish are prolific jumpers and egg crate will not keep them in.

Thank you. The guy at the LFS said he thought they were a pair, that's how he got them and they were seperated from the others, however he didn't charge me a premium for a 'pair', so I don't know. What would be the best way to deal with that possible issue?

It is a good sign if they were "hanging out together" but that is not definitive. You will know when one either jumps or becomes intimidated and is never seen again. Normally this takes 2-4 months and there are no warning signs. Acrylic is ok but since it does not facilitate oxygen exchange the best long term "jump preventer" is quarter inch mesh. BRS and others sell it.

I believe it would be pretty hard to get that mesh lid kit cut around all the things hanging on the back of the tank, so I'll use a narrow piece of acrylic for that and make a lid with the mesh. Thank you.
One other question: If one of my common red firefish does come up missing, could I replace it with a purple firefish?

No. Same issue. Firefish, except bonded pairs, do not like each other. At the LFS, you see many in the same tank, but they have not established territories there so it works. But long term, it will not.
