Want to add:
2 clown fish oscellaris

1 or 2 pyramid butterfly

Is it too much crowded? No behavioral issues, a bit crowded.
Thank you!!

hey steve, just wanted to thank you for your advice. i added a long nose hawk fish to my tank a few days ago and so far, so good with the dottyback. the hawk fish has claimed the left front corner of my tank as his own and if the dottyback swims near, he chases him away. no problems at feeding time so all seems right with their world. :)

As expected. Since they are in a different ecological niche, they don't really compete so they tolerate each other in a fashion. Ambush predators don't like company but they do tolerate it. Always a pleasure . . .

Newly Cycled 20 Gal. Long Fish Options

Newly Cycled 20 Gal. Long Fish Options

Hi all,

I'm new here and I've set up my first SW tank. It's a 20 gallon long and I have just gotten the "OK" from my really great LFS that my cycling is finished, and that now I can add fish. Here are a few questions:

I want at least one regular or black and white clownfish. Are two clowns happier than one? In a small tank like mine I really don't want two of the same fish. Or does having two clowns increase their personality/character/behavior?

I know I want a shrimp variety, but which one I do not know.

So I will have a shrimp, and one or two clowns, can I add a goby or blenny or dottyback too?

My goal is like 3 fish plus a shrimp , if that's possible.

Here is a pic of the 20lbs live sand and 15lbs rock.

Thanks!

I own a long nose hawkfish and engineer goby can i keep these fish with them, and my tank is 35G

Mandarin goby
watchman goby
clown fairy wrasse
black and white clown fish
McCoskeri Fairy Wrasse Fish
Neon Dottyback Fish

75 gal, with 29 gal sump (70 gal total system volume). #80 sand, #60 rock. Skimmer. Flow is 2 x MP10. Lighting is LED.

Current stock is only 2 spotted Cardinalfish, 1 Maroon Clown, all ~2".

I am drawn to the One-Spot Foxface. Description indicates a 70g minimum. I don't want a fish living at the minimum, if not recommended for a 4' long tank.
If not suitable, please recommend a different herbivore.

Cheers,

Michael

Mandarin goby needs a larger tank
watchman goby
clown fairy wrasse needs a larger tank
black and white clown fish
McCoskeri Fairy Wrasse Fish needs a larger tank
Neon Dottyback Fish very aggressive, especially in a small tank

Hi all,

I'm new here and I've set up my first SW tank. It's a 20 gallon long and I have just gotten the "OK" from my really great LFS that my cycling is finished, and that now I can add fish.

You need to learn to test your own water; this will be necessary going forward

Here are a few questions:

I want at least one regular or black and white clownfish. Are two clowns happier than one? In a small tank like mine I really don't want two of the same fish. Or does having two clowns increase their personality/character/behavior?

A single clownfish will become female, two clownfish will become male and female; however your tank is marginal even for a pair of clownfish and they would complete your stocking list

I know I want a shrimp variety, but which one I do not know.

So I will have a shrimp, and one or two clowns, can I add a goby or blenny or dottyback too? No. A pair of clownfish is cramped in a 20 gallon tank

My goal is like 3 fish plus a shrimp , if that's possible. Not with clownfish; you could have 3 small fish if they were behaviorally compatible

Here is a pic of the 20lbs live sand and 15lbs rock.

Thanks!

1- Red Velvet or Blue-Sided Wrasse
2 - B&W Ocellaris
1 - Forktail Blenny
1 - Hi Fin Goby and paired Shrimp
1 - Yellowhead Jawfish
1 - Royal Gramma
1 - Fireball or Flameback Angel

Hi Steve,

You helped me out with my stocking list earlier for my 150 gallon (and I thank you most sincerely - your help was invaluable). I wanted to run my current list and proposed additions past you and see your thoughts.

Tank: 150 gallon, 48 long, 30 high, 24 wide with 30 gallon sump/refugium. Mixed reef. 1/4 inch mesh cover, as I have several "jumpy" species.

Current Fish:

  • Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas) x1 (as a side note, when I first posted in this thread years ago, you said that a Scopas would be fine - I note that in more recent responses you now list the fish as "marginally acceptable" for a 150 gallon. I am curious as to the change in acceptability)
  • Jawfish, Yellowhead (Opistognathus aurifrons) x2
  • McCosker's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) male x1
  • Wheeler's Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris wheeleri) x1, paired with a yellow pistol
  • Macneill's Assessor Basslet (Assessor macneilli) x1
  • Gold Assessor Basslet (Assessor flavissimus) x1
  • Leopard Puffer (Canthigaster leoparda) x1
  • Matted Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) x1

Desired Fish:

  • Stippled Clingfish (Gobiesox punctulatus) x2 (currently in quarantine, do not have to be put in the display if this is inadvisable)
  • Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) x2, mated (previously had a pair for over two years, they recently died of unknown causes. Both fish were fat and well fed in this tank)

I am considering an Anthias trio (Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), male and two females) but am uncertain if this is the best choice for my tank size and if there would be any compatibility issues.

I am also interested in a Gold Spotted Rabbitfish (Siganus punctatus), but I suspect that a 4 foot tank may not be sufficient, and that there may be issues with the Scopas Tang since they are both herbivores. This particular Scopas has been in the tank for three and a half years and has not shown any signs of aggression when new tank mates have been added.

I welcome commentary on my existing live stock as well as on my proposed additions.

As always, thanks so much for everything you do for the hobby!

  • Jawfish, Yellowhead (Opistognathus aurifrons) x2 excellent fish but another jumper
  • McCosker's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) male x1
  • Wheeler's Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris wheeleri) x1, paired with a yellow pistol
  • Macneill's Assessor Basslet (Assessor macneilli) x1
  • Gold Assessor Basslet (Assessor flavissimus) x1
  • Leopard Puffer (Canthigaster leoparda) x1 Not invert safe
  • Matted Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) x1

Desired Fish:

  • Stippled Clingfish (Gobiesox punctulatus) x2 (currently in quarantine, do not have to be put in the display if this is inadvisable) I have no clue since I have not kept them; I do know they are carnivores.
  • Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) x2, mated (previously had a pair for over two years, they recently died of unknown causes. Both fish were fat and well fed in this tank)
should be fine

I am considering an Anthias trio (Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), male and two females) but am uncertain if this is the best choice for my tank size and if there would be any compatibility issues. Anthias do best if fed multiple times per day

I personally would not do this with the scopas tang currently established; but it may work out

hey steve have a newer list to look over of what i'd like possibly.

Have a standard 90 mixed reef w/ 30 sump

CUC is hermits, emerald, snails, peppermints, and a fire shrimp.

Current fish:

Mandarin Goby
Lawnmower Blenny
3x Zebra Dartfish... Not sure if these are like firefish and will gradually become 1? I haven't seen any aggression from them and they all seem to be buddies.

Wanting to add in order:

2x Helfrichi firefish but not sure if i'll be able to get a mated pair or not. Chances they will become a mated pair?
yellow watchmen goby/ yashi shrimp goby/ two spot goby.. I know all 3 are slightly different but definitely want a goby
Radiant or possibly Yellow wrasse, definitely want to stay in the Halichoeres family
2x Picasso/snowflake clowns
Whitetail bristletooth tang IF i can find one.. if not possibly a Kole tang.

Want to try to get a list going before i finish out my stocking on the tank and just go to corals..

THank You

Thanks tons! A couple of follow up questions if I may:

1) I normally feed twice a day. Is this sufficient for Anthias? Any other compatibility/environment issues with Lyretail Anthias? Would you recommend Bartlett's, Carberryi or Resplendent over Lyretail for my current setup?

2) Possible issues with the Scopas aside, would you otherwise view the Gold Spotted Rabbitfish as a good addition to this tank?

Thanks again!

90 Gallon with 30 gallon Sump with Fuge and Aqua C Urchin Skimmer. Plenty of swimming room, Rock is all stacked in the middle of tank so fish can swim all around the tank and through the rock work. Rock work does not touch glass on any side.

1 Bonded pair of Clownfish (Black Ice and Snowflake)

1 FireFish

1 Yellow Tang

1 Starry Blenny

2 Blue Reef Chromis

1 Yellow Watchmen Goby (with Pistol Shrimp)

1 Male Lyretail Anthia

2 Female Lyretail Anthias

1 Blue Mandarin

1 Flame Angel

Firefish, Clowns and Watchmen Goby along with some rock were transferred when I upgraded from a NanoCube. 90 gallon has been running since middle of May. 28G NanoCube was running since February.

What do you think? This would be all the fish I'd like.

Current fish:

Mandarin Goby hopefully you have a mature tank
Lawnmower Blenny
3x Zebra Dartfish... Not sure if these are like firefish and will gradually become 1? I haven't seen any aggression from them and they all seem to be buddies. No, they are not like firefish in terms of intimidation and eventually demise

Wanting to add in order:

2x Helfrichi firefish but not sure if i'll be able to get a mated pair or not. Chances they will become a mated pair? well, you may get two females, two males, or a male + female so you can compute the odds
yellow watchmen goby/ yashi shrimp goby/ two spot goby.

A two spot goby is a very difficult fish and requires a very mature tank for best chances. Success rate is low.

Fine except as noted

1 Bonded pair of Clownfish (Black Ice and Snowflake)

1 FireFish

1 Yellow Tang Be sure to introduce last

1 Starry Blenny

2 Blue Reef Chromis may end up being one; also, be sure to quarantine as they have been coming in with uronema like symptoms

1 Yellow Watchmen Goby (with Pistol Shrimp)

1 Male Lyretail Anthia Normally a slightly larger tank (125 gallons) is preferred for a group of anthias

2 Female Lyretail Anthias

1 Blue Mandarin make sure tank is 9 months mature

1 Flame Angel

Firefish, Clowns and Watchmen Goby along with some rock were transferred when I upgraded from a NanoCube. 90 gallon has been running since middle of May. 28G NanoCube was running since February.

What is "uronema" and what should I look for - I have 5 Green/Blue? Chromis in qt and they have been for 3 weeks. I was planning on 6 to 8 weeks. What would the tx be?
