Good evening guys. Snorvich I've updated my fish list. I'm patiently waiting for my QT to finish cycling. I have a 75gallon tank. Already coral and in stuff in there but no fish. This is my new list. Thoughts?

Fish list in order of purchase
Fire fish x2 or3
Royal Gramma
Purple Fire Fish x2
Watchman goby x2
Sailfin Blenny
Black cap basslet
Yellow head jawfish
Linespot Flasher Wrasse
Kole tang
Mandarin

Hey guys! I always swore I'd be smart and use this thread and your expertise.

110 gal w sump and skimmer. I have enough live rock that it filters the water just fine - water params have been rock steady, but I have left a lot of swimming room for my Tangs. The point I'm trying to make is that the tank is mostly empty. Tank is about a year old and has is established.

Currently I have a Regal Blue Tang, a Yellow Tang and two damsels - both of whom are actually very timid.

We're looking to add some colour for our tank - all of our fish are blue, yellow or blue and yellow (except the velvet damsel).

I'm seriously interested in a Naso Tang or Blond Naso that the LFS has in stock - they have some prime examples in very good health. Thoughts?

I'm also open to suggestions. Sadly - living in Canada, the only game in town is this chain - live aquaria and the like don't ship here.

The LFS also has a copperband angel that's interesting - but again it's more yellow.

We're not adding Coral or anenomes yet because our lighting isn't quite up to snuff.

And we're not getting Clowns because the LFS is almost entirely sold out and we don't like the colouration of any of the remaining examples.

Fish list in order of purchase
Fire fish x2 or3 firefish do not do well in groups in the longer term; the dominant one always intimidates the rest and they starve to death
Royal Gramma
Purple Fire Fish x2 firefish do not do well in groups in the longer term; the dominant one always intimidates the rest and they starve to death
Watchman goby x2 only a bonded pair, otherwise they will eventually fight
Sailfin Blenny
Black cap basslet
Yellow head jawfish
Linespot Flasher Wrasse
Kole tang

I cannot really consult on color schemes as my expertise is marine fish behavior

When you say you could only advocate one of the smaller tangs - do you mean a smaller sized Naso, or is there a species of Tang that doesn't grow as large?

Would I be okay with the copperband angel? My yellow tang is a bit of a dick, but the regal blue is tame and so is the golden belly damsel and like I said the velvet damsel is very timid.

Is there a fish which you think would fit in well dynamically with the fish my wife and I already have?

Reef Central's recommended minimum tank size for tangs is found here. Naso tangs, while some of my favorite are very large tangs normally requiring an 8-10 foot tank. The smaller, less active tangs are the Ctenochaetus tangs. But it is not just fish size that is the determining factor, it is their perceived need for territory as they mature. When tangs feel crowded (remember they occupy the same ecological niche) they eliminate the crowding.

an established yellow tang will not allow a copperband (which needs peaceful tank mates)

I am always happy to reanalyze as long as you provide total stocking plan and tank size

210G:

yellow tang
naso tang
blue hippo tang
powder blue tang
(2) clowns
mandarin

need suggestions to complete this stock list with some active swimmers

Perfect, I knew I had seen that chart kicking around here before. So no Naso - it's settled.

I did some research on the Copper Banded Angel last night and came to that conclusion, plus they're difficult to feed which is exactly what I don't need.

Thanks Snorvich.

You already have some very active swimmers in those tangs and your tank is not really long enough for the P. hepatus or any species of Naso tank. While I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons I will be happy to reanalyze any stocking list as long as the complete list and tank size is provided.

I found this thread after I posted my own (apologies for anyone reading this twice), but would love some feedback from a mod about my tank stocking plans.

Tank is most likely going to be a 36x12x12 (~27 gallon) tank, though possibly a 48x12x12 (~33 gallon), as we like the look of long and shallow. We're also leaning towards having a sump setup to increase the total volume of water and for all of the other benefits we've read about.

So... here are the fish we're considering. They wouldn't be added all at once, and obviously not until the tank is fully cycled, but I'd like to have a general game plan before we start buying equipment and everything. I only want to get captive bred fish so actual stocking might depend on availability, but I can be patient and flexible.

2 ocellaris clownfish
1 royal dottyback OR 1 royal gramma
1 canary blenny
1 tiger goby + shrimp
1 assesor

Do I have to rule out the dottyback for being too aggressive (or maybe just add it last)? And is 6 fish a few fish too many for the setup we're thinking about? Would the long and shallow tank be a good choice for most of these fish, or would some (like the clownfish?) prefer a higher tank? It's my understanding that the longer swimming space is generally better, but not sure if that's the case for the specific fish we're thinking about.

check back when you are ready. About half of the non-australian sourced Copper banded butterflies do not eat prepared food.

2 ocellaris clownfish
1 royal dottyback OR 1 royal gramma the dottyback, while beautiful is really aggressive so I would opt for the royal gramma or at least go with P. fridmani which is less aggressive
1 canary blenny
1 tiger goby + shrimp
1 assesor

except as noted, should be fine

a pair of clownfish (depending on species) will want to control about 25 gallons of tank space. Long and shallow would be fine for all fishes in the plan.

long is essential for tangs, and to some degree for anthias if more than one is desired

Snorvich,

The Yellow tang and Naso are the only ones I have so far off my list. That is just a list I have as a 'wish list' for now. Please let me know what recommendations you have.

As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. One reason is I want you and all aquarists to develop some research skills in figuring out the planned population of their tank. Admittedly this can be difficult with fish behaviors not obvious until one keeps them, which is why I diligently answer this thread.

Hello All, I am cycling my 36G, 36x12x16, I have 40 lbs of Live Rock. It is skimmerless, with a 1g HOB Fuge with chaeto. It is about 3 weeks old now. Just stocked a small Mexican Turbo and a Nerite snail. Got a small pistol shrimp as a hitchhiker.

Hopeful eventual stock will be a lot of LPS and Zoas,

1 Goby (undecided)
1 Flame Angel
1 Flame Hawkfish
2 Ocellaris Clowns

I look forward to any criticism.

Thanks in advance!

1 Goby (undecided)
1 Flame Angel well a dwarf angel is not really reef safe and in any case needs a larger tank since it grazes on algae contantly
1 Flame Hawkfish no shrimp or small fish safe
2 Ocellaris Clowns

I look forward to any criticism.

Thanks in advance!

125 Gallon tank 72x18x24 deep

To begin with:

2 Green Chromis
1 Ignitus Anthias
1 Diamond Watchman Goby
2 bonded Ocellaris
1 Yellow Tang

Tank has been cycling about 2 months now, want to start with putting the Chromis in (after QT). Slowly adding in the list above in the order listed.

After a year, would like to add a Green Mandarin. I have a 12 gallon refugium with Chaeto, looking to plumb in another 20 gallon tank for additional DSB and refugium space.

Does this stocking plan appear to be on the right path?
