Unfortunately, a flasher wrasse requires a significantly larger tank due to its activity level.
D'oh!
Well, so far so good. He seems to just flit about one area of the tank at a time hunting pods.

Okay, I am going to stay away from a dwarf angel then.
If I switched out the orchid dottyback for an indigo or purple dottyback would it be okay with the fire fish and carpenter wrasse?

^^ Fair enough. I'll hope for the long run. The LFS I got to has been good to me so far...
But as always, your advice is valued and appreciated!
*not completed yet, just planning tank, only have 5 lbs dry rock so far* We hope to have a tank primarily with soft corals and fish (a beginner tank).
55 gallon tank with 60lbs live rock, 20g sump with protein skimmer, refugium included with macroalgae. Tank is 48"x20"x12".
Planning on having (sorry a lot of it is either or based on pictures/behavior. Order of additions?
- 2 mated ocellaris black snowflake clowns
- either Orange Stripe Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris randalli) or Hi Fin Red Banded Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes) either is comparable behavior wise
- potentially a yellow & Black Heraldi Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi)
-either Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum) or Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto)
-either Tail Spot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) or Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)
-Zebra Barred Dartfish (Ptereleotris zebra)
- Orchid Dottyback - Tank-Bred (Pseudochromis fridmani) or
Purple Dottyback (Pseudochromis porphyreus) neither are really peaceful, the P. fridmani is less aggressive
- Longfin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis) aggressive; a flasher wrasse would be preferable
We basically want a peaceful tank with fish that fill specific niches and don't over crowd. I have read a large amount of posts to this thread and want to make sure every fish has a lot of swimming room/bioload is ok.
Thanks so much for all you do! I know this thread keeps you super busy. On the up side, it really helps newbies like us make (hopefully) educated guesses on fish.lol
Thanks again!!
CUC Question
This thread is only about marine fish compatibility and I try to keep it on topic. However I will add a couple observations below. If you want general participation, start a separate thread in Reef Discussion of New to the Hobby. This thread is only answered by Reef Central Staff
I am thinking of adding some clean up guys I have never used before and would like your take on them. I have no fish yet.
In my tank:
Emerald Crab
Cleaner Shrimp
Hermits and snails in general, pick crabs or snails but not both since hermits kill snails
Mini White Starfish (came on the rocks)
I was thinking of adding a serpent star (3" max) and a Fuzzy Chiton or 2. I have never housed either except for the little serpents that come on your rocks from time to time. Any issues with these guys I should be aware of?
Your success is my happiness. I think at this point I have done nearly ten thousand responses. On some days it keeps me really busy.
So next goal 100,000 replies.
and you thought you were busy before.

So would a Paracheilinus mccoskeri be preferable to the fairy wrasse? I may nix the dottyback, I really just liked the purple color.
so do many people, but then learn to regret the decision in terms of what the behavior limits in terms of stocking options
In this sized tank is it preferable to have more than one wrasse or is one enough for this sized tank? one is fine
Also, should any of these fish be introduced in a specific order?
always, most aggressive last, most passive first
Thanks!
My LFS has some Vanderbuilt Chromis. Very pretty fish. Do they have the same issue other chromis have with whittling down to one if a group is placed? The LFS swears they co-exist peacefully but I passed till hearing from the expert.
Good morning Steve.
As you know, I'm rebuilding my fish list and had a question.
Have you, or could you post your current tanks inhabitants? I'm very interested.
Thanks.
Thanks much.
A purple Tang and Possums are at the top of the list.
zebrasome tangs, once established, are highly territorial which will limit additions going forward
I kept a Midas, Starry, and a Tailspot Blenny together before the great leak, was I just lucky with them all basically ignoring each other?
you have an 8 foot 240 gallon tank. The 8 foot dimension is critical. The longer a tank (gallons is irrelevant for fish behavior issues), the more feasible it is having occupants in the same ecological niche.
