Hello. Three months ago I setup 55 gallon bare bottom mixed reef with LR and Bubble Magus NAC5 skimmer, cycled and ready to go. The tank is covered with a plastic mesh screen. I have a ton of amphipods whose population I'd like to keep in check. Here's what I have planned:

2x Occ. Clowns
1x Possum Wrasse excellent choice
1x Yellow Assessor
2x Bangaii Cardinals tank raised male plus female only
3x Blue Chromis will become one over time
1x Fire shrimp
2x Peppermint Shrimp

Am I ok with compatibility? Sound like a lot for a 55 gallon?

Sounds like a good plan; just note that the chromis will winnow down to only one long term

I'd rather not bother with the chromis if that will be the likely outcome. Any suggestions to make an interesting addition to this group? I'm open to anything at this point.

Thanks for you help snorvich!

As those that follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. However I am always happy to reevaluate any stocking list as long as you provide the complete plan including tank size.

Okay Ive got one for ya.
Ive got a 29g biocube. Soft & lps coral. Currently stocked with two occelaris clownfish, a skunk cleaner shrimp & CUC.

I would like to add: sifter goby/pistol shrimp pair & a candy hogfish.

Currently running Purigen, Carbon, Phosguard, filter floss, & nitrate reducing pad. Have a plan to get a HOB skimmer when I upgrade the lighting. What do you think? Too much? I would not add the hogfish until I get my skimmer running.

Should be fine; note that hogfish in general are not shrimp safe

I did read that - guess the goby will be working hard to protect his buddy! Lol jk. Im hoping if they are already established shrimp then it will be okay. Besides that I read they typically go after small shrimp....is the pistol very small? Will have to look into this further. Thanks!

Due to the nature of the symbiotic relationship between shrimp gobies and pistol shrimp, the pistol shrimp should not be at risk as it would be protected. However, peppermint shrimp, sexy shrimp, cleaner shrimp, may become dinner. Not all pistol shrimp are commensal so if you introduce Alpheus soror or other noncommensal shrimp, they would be at risk.

Looking to purchase some new friends to add to the QT today.

180 mixed reef display, 75sump w/ designated low flow fuge w/ well established pod population. Tank is about a year and a half established.

Current DT inhabitants:
Kaudern's Cardinal
Ocellaris Clownfish Pair
Diamond Watchman Goby
Male Spotted Mandarin
Tailspot Blenny
Lineatus Wrasse
Carpenter Wrasse
3 Bartlett's Anthias

Additions:
Randalls Assessor Basslet
*Hybrid Powder Blue Tang - Acanthurus leucosternon x nigricans

*This will be the only tang in my tank, though I may want to add another wrasse or two in the future.

Any issue with having these two in a 40g QT together?

should be no problem but the powder blue may not like company. I always suggest one fish at a time but if sufficient pvc is available for shelter, you should be ok. No issues with existing stock.

Thanks as always Steve,

You must have had your coffee already this morning, that was quick!

Based on your earlier advice, I made a revised list (with a couple replacements).

55 gal tank (48" length), no sump, HOB fuge, HOB skimmer and power filter. Standard CUC from Reefcleaners with snails and hermits.

This is my planned order to add:

1. pair of ocellaris clowns, tank bred
2. firefish, helfrichi
3. clown goby, citrinis
4. carpenter's flasher wrasse (I have a screen top)
5. flame angelfish -- provided I have enough algae, wouldn't add for another 12 months

I totaled this as 16" of adult fish. Is that too much for a 55 gal tank? If so, I would probably not add the wrasse. I know the flame angel is pushing it, but I REALLY want one if I can make him/her happy in my tank.

Thank you!

May I ask - if I chose not to go with the goby/shrimp pair and instead went for a lawn mower blenny. Would that be okay in a tank without much hair algae at all? Will they eat cyano at all? What would I supplement their food with? Thanks! ---feel like such a newbie asking these simple questions however, since I only have the 29g biocube Ive not had many fish!

My fish list. I have a 135G, 72 long. List is not in order just need advice on if I'm on the right track of reef safe fish

Unfortunately, I am going to have to ask you to list them here along with the tank size. I cannot really work with that type of attachment.

They will not eat cyano. If you go with an algae grazer, in this sized tank you would need to supply nori.

Stocking a new Nuvo 16

Stocking a new Nuvo 16

My Nuvo 16 has the stock lighting (2 8W Skkye lights, 14K), stock return pump with two outflows, and a Hydor 240. Temp 79*, SG 1.026, ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate 10-20 but working on that with water changes and purigen. 14# Fiji live rock; 15# Fiji pink live sand.

Current critters:
about 30 zoans in mixed colors
green star polyps
small Xenia*
small Kenya Tree*
(*tank is still new; if either of these take off I know the risk of them taking over--but I wanted the movement.)

1 firefish goby
six very small nassarius snails, 1 nerite snail
two hitch-hiker hermit crabs: one blue leg, one red leg (not sure which type)

Plan to add more low-light soft corals such as Riccordias and yellow polyps, more zoans, and one or two more fish. Candidates:

yellow clown goby
tail-spot blenny
ocellaris clown

Thanks in advance for your comments!
