Pohl's Coral Vitalizer-What is it?

when I stopped Zeo, I started getting bryopsis and red algae. The plus side was that the corals started growing again. CV is supposed to bridge the gap between a low nutrient systen with near starving sps and and an algae free system with brightly colored growing sps.....I think.... :)

Way too early for me to give an update. But, I've been using the homebrew CV for 5 days now......no sliming or algae outbreaks.

PE "appears" to be better.

What home brew are you using?....... ingredients

okay an update on my experiences with the clam juice/emulsified cod liver oil homemade version

In short, the cod liver oil version doesn't work at all. Coloration hasn't improved at all. No noticable growth.

Another thing, this mixture doesn't look or smell very much like Pohl's CV. A reefer in my Toronto got a hold of a bottle of Pohl's. They are VERY different.

Another thought.....clam juice... I was wondering why is ldrhawke suggesting to use clamjuice? I think it's because the clam juice has that "marine" smell to it. and he was trying to use it to make his mixture smell like pohl's? The emulsified cod liver oil smells nothing like pohl's. In fact the clam juice doesn't even smell that much like pohl's.

another thing.. this stuff is naturally mint flavoured. so like onthefly suggests, it's probably spearmint. Have you put spearmint near a mucous membrane? it burns. It's why spearmint gives you that tingly sensation. It's why it feels "cold". It's also why I don't want to put spearmint into my tank anymore heh.

The other reefer with the real pohl's CV has tried my ghetto version and his real version. Very noticable immediate polyp extension with pohl's. No real response with mine. (I do get excitement from the fish though like onthefly observed as well)

I'm not going to keep using this. if I ever get enough money, I'll buy the Pohl's version which actually does seem to work.

Well i didnt jump to the oil and clam juice. I did order pohls though. Along with some other stuff. I will test po4 and trates when i start dosing.

I spent the money and purchased CV months ago. I have tried both and I don't need a third parties comments to build a case. I never experienced immediate polyup extension using pohl's CV or noticeable difference from the coral response or color between the two products. The homemade is a small fraction of the cost.

Naso - Twin labs Noewiegien (sp?) "EMULSIFIED" cod liver oil (and in my case mint flavored)...if you can find a nonflavored EMULSIFIED CLO...go for it! Mix 1 part CLO/3 parts Clam juice (I, and ldrhawke use yankee clipper brand.....ingredients: clam juice, salt). Shake it, and dose 2-3 drops/25ga.

I think ldrhawke's comment about clam juice and CLO begin nothing more than a concentrated version of many people homemade fish/coral food is very valid. As for the mint, I see no ill-effect in the corals or fish...I saw worst effects putting vinegar in my kalkwasser :)

have you ever smelled live rock and SPS coral when it is pulled from a tank.......it can use a little mint flavor for kissing sweet breath.

banned already?..so wrasselover is ldrhawke? aww...

i think i need to go make a zeovit forum account to talk to ldrhawke/wrasselover

onthefly how much are you dosing? maybe i need to up my dosage? also what "brand" of clam juice did you use?

That's funny Dave! I just saw that too

So, I contacted ldrhawke last week and found out that he was using "yankee clipper" brand clam juice and cutting the CLO 1:4. I found it at "Safeway" here in oregon. So, other than the minty freashness..mine is the same as his. In fact, he didn't tell whether he had unflavored or not?

I add 2-3 drops a day in my tank (25ga). I try to add some with the lights on and some with them off. I took plenty of pics, so if I notice a difference I'll post them.

Although I am not on ZEOvit my system has low nutrients (NO3 < 0,5mg/L and PO4 < 0,03 but far from undetectable). I have strong skimming, strong lighting, and perform weekly 5% water changes. I've always added trace elements, amino acids and feed my corals on a daily basis. I've tried a number of different products from different manufacturers (ie. Seachem's ReefPlus, Amino Stabil, etc.).

Two or three months ago I started dosing CV and AAHC (ZEO's concentrated amino acids). I just happened to get one of the first batches of Pohl's CV to arrive in my country.

I did notice some changes immediately that I really couldnt tie to anything but the CV. Just after starting CV everyone noticed that the tank looked amazing.

After about three or four weeks I started to notice new axial coralites. First on one or two corals and now on just about everything.

There are really too many things going on in my tank to say this is because of this or that. Its not trouble free either. I've got my share of headaches. But overall I'm happy and I'm going to stick with my dosing. Two friends who visit me regularly are also convinced (at least enought to give it a shot). They bought their CV and started dosing it last week.

Not to cause an argument but I get new axial corralites in 2-3 weeks time too and I don't does either of the aforementioned. Is this change really that drastic?

Not drastic for some, but my system was ultra low nutirents (BB, no fish, no feeding, cooked rock, etc) and coral health and color was starting to go down hill.

It seems like it to me because I wasn't seeing that happen before.

I've wondered that all along, too. So often nutrient poor can mean, in practice, starved IMO.

I'm going to be objective about this and post pics either way, but I plan on giving it some time...maybe a month or so.
