Polyp Extension

For some reason I noticed I have very poor PE on my acros. Pink Lemonade and shades of fall used to have major PE is now barely has any.

Parrams are good and stable still havbe good color and growth.

Ton of flow in the tank from the wavemaker.

I did switch light about a month ago to slightly better ballast. Could that be the problem.

Any ideas.

Look for Red Bugs and make sure that none of the fish are nipping at them.

Maybe change around the flow some if you have not.

No red bugs. The more I look at the corals its making me more nervous. I will have to watvh my tangs to see if one of them starting nipping at them.

Polyp Extension?

Polyp Extension?

Hi Scooter902 ; Have you checked your salinity recently , I sometimes forget to check it when I am busy testing everything else. I know when my PH is low my star polyps will not open. :hammer:

Could be. I would turn the GFO off and change out the carbon with a fresh batch, unless you have recently done this. When I have stripped my nutrients in the propagation systems, it is always from excess GFO over a long period. Acro's look pale and if the problem does not get corrected, polyps with stay retractecd.

I've usually pinpointed PE issues to GFO overuse and/or lack of flow.

Keep in mind that Polyp Extension is in no way an indication of coral health or happiness. SPS, showing "good" polyp extension, could actually be more of an indication of a "hungry" coral, reaching for food or light.

Lack of PE, aside from the presence of predators or pests, does not indicate an unhealthy SPS coral.
