Pooky's 300

Thanks Sara! Now hurry up and grow those corals so you can add a nipper :D Although my philosophy has always been to feed the fish enough so that they don't need to eat the corals.

Sometimes I wish that philosophy always worked :sad1: No matter how much they get fed, mine still graze the rocks and since the corals are attached to the rocks....you get the point :p

Thanks for the updates Leo! They are definitely looking better than when they got pulled.

The first one is just a no name that I've had a long time with inch long blue tips when happy. The second one is the ORA Hawkins. The 4th is the GARF Bonsai. The 5th is the Pink Jade from Alicia. And the 6th is the LE Purple Unknown.

Are you changing you lighting?

That's one of the considerations but that's the most costly. I saw some outstanding display of LED lighting at RAP and they really got me thinking. Yes, the initial cost will be high, but when you take into account the cost savings in electricity, bulb replacement, and tank cooling, it's not really that bad over the long term. The only thing I am not so sure about is I don't have any information on how well LED's do on a reef tank in terms of growth and coral healthy b/c they are still relatively new.

The other change, and it may happen as soon as WM gets them, is to change out the 2 Sedra 9000s on the skimmer and replace with 2 Sicces. The draw less juice and produce less heat. Performance wise, Jon said they are about equal.

Very cool Kenny. When I was thinking of breaking down the reef and doing more fish, I was also looking into that option. There are so many new cool LED products that are coming out on the market. Its just going to take some time to convince reefers with established tanks to make the switch.

Some of those LED lit tanks did look great. And the reps are making a lot of claims on their products. But in the end, it all comes down to seeing tanks with proven success with LED lights over the long term.

Yep, I have seen a few nice LED set ups, but nothing to the extent that I think I would need to replace the radiums. Even the lfs that was pushing them heavily switched back to halides and the tank just looks better.

LED lit tanks can look just as good because of the different bulb configurations and you can turn them on selectively. I saw enough at RAP to be impressed. And they still have that lovely shimmer :D

Your right, but they are not ready for prime time. Since they operate on circuits, there's possible longevity issues. Regarding configuration, they are dimable so that's a huge plus, but combination of bulbs and color spectrums have to more available. The expense is going to be in programming units, it's like buying a controller.

That's my thought exactly. Until it's proven, I ain't spending one dime.

Kenny / Leo are you guys referring to the LEDs that were on the Quality Marine (I think) tank? Those were pretty cool looking. I put my hand right under the emitters and they gave off very little heat. Do either of you guys know who manufacturers them? I forgot to ask and I'd like to read more about it. Not really interested (yet) just curious.

The QM display was one of the better looking units there and that's really what got me interested. Unfortunately, I was too busy to find out who the manufacturer was.

LEDs are not hot fundamentally, that wouldn't be the concern since we run MH that run hotter than anything there is, anything that's not MH will be cooler for sure! I'm more concerned about looks, par, and long term use. I didn't see the kind of shimmer that are comparable to MHs, but there was shimmer, hehe. Don't get me wrong, it didn't look bad :D Finding out what fixture is easy, just a phone call away.

Well, one of the guys I talked to who was hawking LEDs at his booth said LED bulbs have an average life of about 5 years. That's one of the reason that make it appealing with the cost savings in new MH bulbs every 8-9 months. Let's say you have to change the bulbs 8 times in those 5 years at an average of $80 a pop, that's already $640 right there.

I have a friend that has been running LED over his tank for a couple of yrs now. His coral look great but he doesn't keep SPS. Until there is long term success with SPS I'm not sold.
