Possible Pathogen Based Acro Necrosis

Shots of the tort from the link....

this shot shows the healthy top.... which was also heavily fragged along with the yongei and the cut points have healed and are growing

elseyi/insignis recession (this coral was removed and dried in the sun to look for aefw's that stain when the coral is dried out)

shot of the weakening tissue of the same coral that looks like what is going on with the Cali tort

graveyard... this bucket is almost full... it isnt full of a coupla colonies filling up a bucket.. .this is a buncha very nice frags i was growing out in my frag tank (with some pieces of a colony or two mixed in)

i hope you can resolve the issue quickly

all i can say is it looks identical to the issues i had with the low alk seachem salt....but it seems like that isnt the problem. great help i am huh ;)

good luck and hang in there!

i have taken a crapload of dkh readings with old and brand new salifert test... now i am working on getting readings from another brand name just in case the salifert readings are wrong

I had some issues a few months ago with three tanks and sps losing tissue it looked identical to the tissue lightening and loss in the pictures you posted. It started with an ORA chips then to a yellow tort then all other sps corals I was doing 10%-20% daily water changes. I though at first it was AEFW then a chemical issues. I could not nail it down.
Then I recalibrated my refractometer. My tank water was at 1.018. I brought it back up to 1.026 and things began to recover quickly.
I’m not saying that is your problem but it was mine and it was a stupid mistake. However you might want to double check thinks out. I’m not sure if it is possible but could there be something throwing off your salinity readings a chemical in the salt you’re using. Any way just sharing what I did and it did look and sound similar to what you’re battling.

Best of luck,
David.

thanks for sharing... i have two pinpoint salinity meters and used the cali-fluid on both... i also have a refractometer that i double calibrated at 0 and 35ppt

see any holes in that? ... something else i should consider in terms of trying to get an accurate salinity reading?

kinda like a temperature reading... do you go by what the neptune says, the ranco, the pinpoint, or the floating glass thermometer... i've always been told to calibrate everything to the glass thermometer

as far as readings go... i guess we are all at the mercy of the folks giving us the test kits and instruments... at the same time... these things were all used when the tank was healthy

there are just way too many things to go wrong... but if i narrow all of this down to what has changed since the problem commenced... i get this list... and in this order

1) Jan- 07=received a wildAC acro frag that necrosed in my frag tank no matter how many baths or how many times i fragged and remounted it

2) Mar 20, 07=started running low dose o3

3) Mar-07=started mixing in red sea pro salt at 25:75 to IO (have stopped a month ago)

4) Mar-07=used gen-x schuran style media as my substrate

5) Apr-07=started running high dose UV in the frag tank

maybe i could throw season change in there too... in the cool months i run 78-80... in the hot months 80-82... this spring with cool nites and hot days... i've been getting 78/79-81/82 swings... but i've noticed this before over the years with no problems

i snipped a receded branch off an acro here at work (and yes, this is complicated because i dont know if the new problem at work is related to the old problem at home).... i put it under the scope (all i have is 3x).. .and this is what i get... i dont know what i am looking for

anybody see something there alarming?

You would love to hear my experiences with the pinpoint calibration fluid ;) Take a look for yourself.

Seriously, man made things are prone to error. It could be the Red Sea salt. I have no respect for red sea after using their test kits. If I was you, I would do some water changes, very large ones with natural seawater. Like the stuff from catalina. Then for sure you can say that the salt is the problem or not. Just a thought. Also if you do, dont touch any readings in the salt, just add it to the tank.

I just looked briefly at this thread and it seems that several people that are having this problem are using Red Sea Pro salt.
I also use red sea pro and have started having some issues as well. Two frags which were incrusted and showing new growth all of sudden bleached right after a water change and now I have a Lg orange digi colony showing the same symptoms as the pics kip posted

salt.... very, very interesting

but at the same time... i have a 75g newly setup for frags of my acros to hopefully do better in... this tank is running all RSPro ... been running just short of a month with no worries so far

The salt bit is also worth a shot at this point. I have serious issues with my tank when I use RedSea and Oceanic brand salt mix and now only use Tropic Marin.

I swung by my LFS and picked up TMPro, which is what I was using before. Only reason I switched was that MACNA study. Mixing tonight and am going to do a couple of water changes over the weekend. Would be interested to see if anyone else does the same and it makes a difference.
