Possibly adding an Orange Shoulder Tang

A fellow local reefer has a changing orange shoulder about 4.5 inches long for sale. And I wanted to get some info from someone more experienced with them. I currently have a Tomini and am thinking they will be fine together. But want to be sure the tomini is fairly small about 2.5 inches.

Question #1. Will an Orange shoulder and Tomini coexist in the same tank(220 gallons)

Question #2. Are Orange shoulders susceptible to ich like the zebramosa genus?

1. Yes I currently have these two in a 220 and they have been together for 10 months now without any issues. Orange shoulder is about 7" and Tomini is 3"

2. All fish are susceptible to ich. I would QT and proactively treat all fish with PP and cupramine or CP or TT

I had an orange shoulder that went from a 3" juvenile to a 9" monster in a little over a year and he was the most aggressive fish in my 225

Mine has grown from 2.5" to 7"+ in 10 months but isn't the least it aggressive. Each individual fish will vary

Like Dmorty said every fish is different. I tend to look for the more scared tang and the one that is getting beat up by the others the most in that situation. I believe that they are then more passive in nature, but i have no science to prove this. A fish could be the omega in one tank. Then get moved and become the meanest alpha you have ever had. But a tomini and an orange shoulder? i do not see any problem.

thanks for the answers guys.

now when setting up a QT how do I go about filtration for it? I can get another tank setup but do I use live rock and a skimmer? I know you dont use carbon as it will absorb the meds. I have neer set up a QT before

He's got that right! I run a 40 breeder & 10 gallon, plumbed together, that runs 24/7 - 365 days per year. I treat everything with Seachem's Cupramine & Prazi Pro.

anyone?

Use water from your DT and you should have a filter or bio wheel or something that good bacteria grows on seeding in your sump ready to go at anytime.( I have 2 in my sump) a HOB filter will work fine. A skimmer isn't necessary for a QT. Live rock is fine to use but needs to be removed before meds go in. One thing about the live rock, if your tang shows signs of ich in QT then the liverock will also have ich on it

i dont use any bio wheels in my sump just a filter sock a large piece of live rock and an ATS.

So would water out of the DT be good? I dont run any HOB type filters at all

The DT water will be fine but you need some sort of filtration on the QT (HOB filter) I also don't run any HOB filter on my DT but you will need one on your QT

Yes that would work just fine. I would recommend always having sponge or something similar in your sump or colonized with beneficial bacteria to be able to quickly setup a QT or hospital tank if needed

would a 15 gallon work? I feel it will be too small but the guy is taking his tank down tomorrow and dont have time to get a larger tank setup for a QT. The 15 I can get setup right now with DT water and the sponge out of my reactor so I dont have to cycle. Also have some extra Live rock rubble that I wil throw in since I'm not worried about losing it if I have to dose

would a sponge out of my carbon reactor work? I can easily buy a HOB filter at wally world

After many years of worthless bacteria-in-a-bottle products; there are final two on the market that will establish a bio-filter when you use them with a HOB or sponge filter. Bio-Spira and Dr. Tim's. I've tried both and am amazed at how well they work. The sponge in your reactor would probably work too; but there are a lot of variables----so no definite answer. Looking down the road: get an AquaClear HOB for your QT and keep extra sponges and/or the ceramic media somewhere in your system with good flow. This media will instantly cycle a QT. AC HOB filters will outlive you.

Here are a few videos of my fish QT. This should give you fairly good idea and explanation of what is doing what and why. It's an overview of what works well for me. It runs 24/7, 365.

So I found a 29 gallon and did a water change out of the DT for about 24 gallons and put a few gallons of fresh mixed water.

Also added a small piece of LR out of the DT as well as a sponge out of my reactor. Hopefully this will be enough bacteria. The rock has been in my tank since May so i think it should be ok. Running a HOB filter with just floss in it.

Let me know if this will work. fish should be coming to me this afternoon

You should be fine with what you are describing. Keep a eye on the ammonia levels, I would suggest the badge that goes on the inside of the aquarium glass
