post pics of hawkins echinata

bad pic but as soon as I moved mine under the 400watt metal halides it started growing pretty fast

Mine had great color but I moved it into a spot where I thought it would be better suited with higher flow but it has browned out a bit. It still looks like its trying to encrust more then grow and its about mid tank, should I maybe move it to higher/lower light?

Here's mine. Just took the pic. 7:45 am under natural sunlight (no other lights). If I get home early enough, I'll take and afternoon pic for comparison.

Good grief, I just realized mine has been here for almost TWO YEARS and never really grown at all. I seriously gotta figure out what's up with my SPS!

I hope the OP doesn't mind if I interrupt this thread with a quick question.

There seems to be such variability in coloration with this coral as seen in the pictures above. Mine seems to be getting a bit darker in color recently but what is the secret to pulling more of the purple/blue out of this coral?

Mine is in the top 1/3 of my 120. Originally under 2 X 175 Iwasaki 15 K halides with T5 supp's. Mine now is under an 8 X 54 watt Tek T5. My Hawkins does seem to be responding to the T5's but has a long way to go to be the color I want out of it. Secrets?

Here is mine. Started as a small 2" frag. It is placed high in my tank under 150 watt 14K Phoenix DE MH's. Grows well, but is a pain to frag.

Froggy, personally I keep mine up high under a 14 bulb T5 fixture. I know when I had a PO4 issues it browned out a bit.

I called my LFS and he said he would either frag his piece which is a pretty good sized colony and give me multiple branches for 45 or 50 bucks or he would just order me one since it's an ORA piece and it would be probably an inch and a half or so.

If I were you, I'd take up your LFS offer. Unless ORA has reduced their prices, you can expect to pay more.

I love this coral. Haven't tried yet because I've heard they're actually a tougher sps coral to keep. Hopefully soon.

Not too to difficult Eric.. They just don't like to be dipped..As long as your system is stable and mature, it should thrive..
