Prolific/Growth using actinics only !!!!

Ok guys this is just my experience.....I have 15 modules of AI sol super blue..
1 display tank and 4- 100 gallons frag tanks ...one for zoas and mushrooms, another for LPS, another for SPS and the last one for growing my zoas...
I do run very low whites, the max in whites during the day is 5percent in the zoa and LPS tank.....Sps tank run the most 20 white from 1 pm to 5pm after it goes mostly blue and royal blue....colors and growth are ok...
Zoa tank and LPS tank the most is 5 percent from 1 pm to 5 pm after and before just blue and royal blue, color is amazing and growth is pretty good.
Display tank 3percent white in the am and 5 percent from 1pm to 5 pm after all blue and royal blue..growth is very good considering is a mix reef with tons of sps which have the most amazing colors and growth...
Here some pics of the tanks....
As you can see last tank has more whites..Sps

Please take a time to watch this video:

And to understand some more about light and corals in captivity:

  • Too much blue is detrimental to corals in the long run.
  • The balance of SPECTRUM and PAR is the way to go.
  • Sunlight should be the focus when we plan the illumination of "photosynthetic corals" in captivity.

Some important info about LEDs also!!

All that is true for zoas also!

Have fun!

I watched that video last week; it truly opened my eyes to bulb coloration. He went into such great detail and explained everything very well. When he show the spectral chart for the sun there is a substantial amount of blue light there, while the day light colors are relatively low. It is important to understand that corals need because these creatures have evolved over many years to adapt to what mother nature throws at them. So it can't be good for us as hobbyist to go changing stuff quickly to see what happens.

Question.

Im running a nova extreme pro 6x 39 watt t5 over my 30 breeder frag tank....all zoas.

4 ati blue plus 1 uvl actinic 1 ge 6500.............Do you guys think I would see more growth if I removed one of the blue plus and replaced it with a ge 6500? Or does the good amount of par coming from the blue plus make up for it?

Probably not, check that video out that Grandis linked.

I hope everyone reads it. This is the type of information which will impact ones reef keeping experience. Thanks for sharing it AG.

Mooch

:thumbsup:Hey Jarred1, good stuff man, thanks for sharing that. Should enlighten a lot of reefers.

The Blue Plus has a good PAR, but it doesn't make up for the 6500K.
If you want to add the 6500K remove the UVL actinic, not a Blue Plus.
Yes, they will show better growth rates if you add the 6500K.

I think Jarred1 misunderstood your questions.

thanks grandis!

just to be clear I currently have 1 ge6500k in there now....so adding another one would mean there would be 2.

thanks
