PTSD treatment tank

Well first off I would like to start a thread about my tank build that I'm going to build. But a little back ground on me. I guess I'm going to name my tank the PTSD treatment tank. I am a Army combat vet. I was in the infantry and served in Iraq a couple of times. I have a 40 breeder right now that I watch more then my TV.
Now onto the tank. I just ordered a Deep Sea Aquatics 190 gallon pro. I should be picking it up on Friday. I have been looking at all of the different tanks and looking and trying to figure out what one or style would work best for me. The DSA had everything that I wanted and the price was good. While looking at tanks I planned on going with a steel frame stand for my tank. Then covering it with a wood skin. I talked to one company that builds tanks and stands and got a quote from them. At first I was thinking that it was a really good deal. A steel stand and then having it powder coated for $1100. But I guess I got a wild hair up my but and thought about checking out a few other places. Then on my way home from the LFS I though that I should stop and talk to a local metal fabrication shop that is next to my house. He asked me to the size and what color of the powder coat that I would like on it. He worked up a price for me right there and said $413 for everything. Well I gave him the money and he said it would be done in 7-10 days.
So I guess as soon as I start getting everything I will start this crazy build. I'm looking forward to this and can't wait until I can sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor of getting my little part of the sea in my living room. I will be asking tons of questions and will be posting pictures as things goes. So I guess the next part is planning equipment to get ordered or on the list of things that I need to order.

Subscribed, looking forward to seeing this build.Appreciate your service to our Country, hope all goes well.

Thanks the tank is 60" long 27" tall 27" deep. I can't wait for it to get here. Right now I'm looking into what skimmer I should get for it. Any ideas on what I should run? Also does anyone have any input on the DC return pumps that they have out now? I what to go with a external pump on this tank for the size of it. But I'm open for ideas and can change my mind. Lighting I will go with LED's I have them on my 40 and I love them. So that will be something to look into because of its size. It seems that most of them cover a 24" square area but it being 27" I have to do some looking.

I love that size tank, Im planning to do the same size, or the 6' 225 gallon when I upgrade, I look forward to following your build, thanks for your service and Im sorry for what it may have caused you. I really wish you guys didnt have to go through that kind of stuff.

Lights that cover a 24 inch square ought to be fine unless you plan to cram stuff right up against the front glass. Also reduces algae build up on the glass. If I were buying a new skimmer, I think I'd go with one of the new Aquamaxx cone skimmers.

Never thought of a reef tank as 'treatment' LOL. Maybe tank crash causes a few cases of PTSD.

Thanks for your service though, and good luck on the tank.

I am getting ready to order a DSA 190 too!! I think Im going to go with an AquaMaxx skimmers for mine. Ill be following closely!

Well I think I just got my sump ordered. It's a Elite Aquatics custom made one that has a built in calcium reactor in it. So that will be one less thing to buy later down the road. They made it custom for someone but then he changed his mind and went with a different style. Score one for me on a great find.

Well today I am looking at ordering up a skimmer. I was just getting ready to order the Reef Octopus Super Reef 3000 for it but I can't. I guess its a good thing that I double checked the skimmer section on the sump. Its 10"X17 1/4" and the super reef is 10 1/4"X 14 5/8". Well time to keep on looking for a skimmer. I would rather go larger then not enough skimmer.

Keep looking there are a lot out there. If you can you might want to think external. Then the 'sump' section will just house the pump and where the drain goes.

I was thinking I could go with the diablo DCS 200. Yeah it would be 1/4" to wide for the footprint of my sump but I can fix that. I was thinking I could trim off about a 1/8" off of both sides on the base. It looks like it has a 1/4" to 3/8" extra on the base plate that it sits on. Then it would fit like a glove in my sump.
As for a external one I don't think that I will have the room for it. Everything has to go under the stand and the sump is going to take up most of it.

Well I just got the call and my tank is here and ready for pickup. Now I need to round up a couple of people so we can get it loaded up in my truck. The sad thing is it will be in my garage for about a week while I wait on the stand. But I will get some pictures going at least with it even if its all wrapped up in the garage. The sump should be here sometime next week so that's always good. I think the stand and the sump are timed just right I should be getting them both about the same time. Now to look at return pumps.
How is everyone liking the "DC" return pumps? To me they just seem cool and I like how they can be adjusted with out having to turn gate valves.

Yes I am one happy camper I just picked up the tank today. Now I just need to get the rest of the stuff here so I can start putting it together.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should get for a return pump. The tank is here the stand will be done this week and the sump should be here this week. Now its time to plan out the plumbing and get the return pump ordered. I have been eyeing the DC pumps but I am kind of iffy on they because they have only been out for just a few. Unless I went with a Red Dragon. But I have a hard time talking myself into that. So does anyone have one and if so how do you like it?

Well today I'm going to get some blackout window tint to do the back of my tank. I have always painted the backs but I would like to give this a try. That way if I ever need to I can just remove it with no problems.
