Purple crispa

I finally found the purple Heteractis crispa I've been looking for - Aquatic Collections had actually 2 of them today.

A large with nice color and not much bleaching:

It was expelling some Zooxanthellae though

This was the other one. Smaller and a bit bleached:

I took the larger one.

This is it at home under sunlight:

It spat out a lot of stuff inside the bag an has a bit of an open mouth now.

The question now is to treat or not to treat...

congrats! Norcal gets all the nice nems!

I'll pm you guys for a list of must visit stores next time i drive up!

You guys got all the luck. I would love a Magnifica with color tentacles.
I've seen a few of the mags with the dual color tentacles and the red foot recently, though also the ones with the plain brown tentacles.

Do you think the crispa needs treatment?

I wonder also if my malus need treatment - they deflate and inflate all the time, though it is largely with the light cycle and otherwise they don't look sick, just not too happy. I guess they would prefer whiter light as they did best under the 5k daylight bulb.

A lot of these nems are in such shallow water they are exposed at high tide, they are getting full spectrum light. I would have my lighting ramp to at least 10k for a couple of hours during the day.

Beautiful anemones for sure!

Yes I would start treating them, I think its a given with the condition most of these anemones are after collection and being transferred to many different tanks, they more than likely are sick. It's IMO always better to err on the side of caution and the longer you wait the the harder it will be to get rid of it.

Good luck with your anemones.

Is there a website link to the LFS where you got it from?

You are experienced in keeping anemones your trust your instinct. Bacterial infection tend to cause them to get sick quickly over several days. When they look unhappy but does not actually decline, I don't think antibiotic will help.

Although I keep all the host anemones, other than Mertensii, at one time or another, I don't have a lot of experience with Crispa. I don't think zoox expelling warrant treatment. You just have to evaluate him from day to day, if he seem worst then treat him.

My Malu does a lot better with low spectrum light and with feeding. In my experience, Maru is really sensitive to water quality. They will be unhappy when I neglect changing my water, before my Magnifica or Gigantea. They are most happy when I am on the ball and stick to my routine in water change and feed them.

I agree with Dkuhlmann. If you are going to treat, it is a lot better to treat early than later. If you use the normal recommendation dose of antibiotic, the anemone will not be negatively affect by antibiotic. You can treat healthy Mag and Gig with no problem. If they are infected and we with hold treatment for even two days the affect can be very drastic.
I have no experience in treating Malu or Crispa with antibiotic but I don't expect it to be much different. Best of luck. That Crispa have outstanding color.

In my experience the main problem with crispas is that they mostly arrive at the stores completely bleached. The gaping mouth disease you see with mags or gigs seems to be rather rare with them.

What they primarily need is good light and water.

It didn't deflate in the container I kept it in overnight so I probably will just put it into the 42 gallon tank. I'm kind of out of QT anyway - all full with fish.

I took this only because unbleached crispas are rare to begin with and finding purple ones is almost like winning the lottery - I simply couldn't let it pass :D

If shipping wouldn't be such a hassle I would have been happy to ship you the other one - it was quite nice too and really a close call.

Wooohoo! Guess I'm gonna try and sneak up there tomorrow!

Did you get one?

This is the purple crispa settling into the tank - as a precaution I put all the SPS I have in that tank in the cage with the Red Sea regal.
