Lemon drops, AOI, Alien eyes, Purple Hornets all the same just a morph of one or the other.Purple Hornets are over priced AOI
JMO

Ed, you do realize that ALL zoanthids are just morphs of each other, right?
As for Lemon Drops and Aoi's being the same, I beg to defer. I have AOIs and some very similar to Lemon Drops and IMO, they don't come close to what true Purple HOrnets look like in person when I had them. That glowing ring and those alternating skirts makes you wonder how something so perfect was created.

IMO purple hornets are all hype I have some AOI zoas that are stunning and turning purple as we speak.

If you want to pay $50.00 + per polyp for Zoas, It is your money.Just because you buy them purple doesn't mean they will stay purple.

Of all the zoas/palys I've purchased, only one has ever morphed into a slightly different color and it is now morphing back to its original color scheme.

So your saying that it is unlikly that the above picture of lemon drops would morph to a purple color under strong lighting?

read this...http://www.zoaid.com/articles005.php

Lemon drops to me look like what some call PHs... according to some pictures I've seen. What I am trying to say is that it is unlikely if you purchase a purple hornet that it will morph into something entirely different, like blue or green. It may get paler or deeper depending on lighting but I don't think it is likely it will morph.

FWIW, the hornets I have were exposed in all different lighting variations and never morphed at all. The only difference I notice is that the color of the ring and alternating green skirts becomes more vibrant in higher light. Other owners can chime in, but to my knowledge they are most definatly NOT the same. HTH!

I can't say I blame the owners for backing the Zoa. I mean you paid so much for those purple hornets you got to try and get your money back right?IMO they are the same.

looking at your 3 links, I dont know how you can say they look the same. similair? sure, a ton of zoas look similair to each other. and if thats good enough, so be it.

some of us want something specific...

The first person to introduce this morph to the zoanthid community was Casey Lacefield. Their origin is from Kupang, Indonesia. According to Casey, the Purple Hornets came up quiet often on the supply list for almost every week before disappearing all together. According to Gary, whom I will soon introduce, they appeared once on the list before Casey was able to acquire the entire colony. At the time they were identified as various different names that were already in existent, ranging from Lemondrops, AOIs, or Alien Eyes. For the most part, the Purple Hornets went unnoticed by the overall public with an exception to few hardcore zoanthid collectors. Similar to many wild zoanthid colonies, the mother colony suffered heavily from fungus and zoapox infections. Fortunately, he was able to relay on a few frags to his locals and most importantly to Gary at reefpets.com before losing his entire colony.

ed, I don't think anyone is arguing that PH's were a morph but they have achieved "LE" status because they maintain their color, tight circular ring and alternating skirt under different conditions. At least that is what I am hoping. $-)

also, relatively slow growing, tends to be a must for a polyp to maintain the LE status. lots of great zoas out there, and most will become relatively affordable with time as they grow.

all about a series of circumstances. like the frag being overlooked for years, then having a hand full fragged, the mother colony dieing, and bam, no more coming from the wild, only a small amount in collectors tanks, and slow growth.

btw, Im sure it will drop in price eventually. compounded growth and all that. one day the PH will be the same as any other indemand named coral around 10-25$ a polyp. but it may be a year or 2 to get there. if you want it now instead of later, you pay to play. be glad that some of us are, as we are the ones you'll be hoping to grab a polyp from later for cheaper.

I've read this thread just now from the beginning.
If you all do that, when you get time it's kind of funny. :)

Anyway after reading it too quickly the first time, i'm like "

", but then i had to giggle a little bit because it reminded me of...
"Who's on first?"
"What."
"No, What's on second."
"Well is it Who's on first, or What's on 2nd?"
"What."
"What what?"
"What-is-on-second!!"....

Sorry, i had to share that.
Carry on you all.
