purple primer

YOU know... the stuff used on PVC before the glue.
Do you use it?

I have... and I haven't. Can't say that I've noticed a difference in results.

You should use it, it's in case there's some gook on there... but don't use purple primer use clear- it looks much better.

Definitely use it Gary. It cleans and preps the PVC for the glue. Any oils or manufacturing residues can compromise the glue joint.

Used both the purple and clear on the 120 build. Both work great, clear ia much better looking. I do like the visual reference on the purple, the clear is well......clear!

clear looks better but you cant tell if you got everything I always use purple and blue glue too it dries and cures much faster

I've always used it. I could be totally wrong, but I thought that it reacted with the glue to make the PVC expand for a tighter seal. I never have PVC in an area where the aesthetics matter, so I've never bothered with the clear.

I only use it on pressure joints. The code says that you use it on waste lines also and local code requires the use of the purple so the code enforcement official can see that it was done. But like I said I only generally use it on pressure joints and even then only use the clear because of the ascetics....I don't like seeing the purple.

I think if you wipe the pipe with a towel and it's not oily or dirty there's no reason to use it. The glue itself has the same solvent as the primer and "cleans" as you go. The primer just doesn't have PVC in it and acts faster. That being said I use it for cheap insurance. Anybody ever not use it and get leaks?

I've ran a TON of schedual 80 PVC for work and we only glued things (high voltage ductbank between manholes and buildings), but I will tell you that it does let water in through the joints. We used a LOT of glue on every joint too, but it was 5" so I can't say that I have a lot of experiance with anything smaller. But for the cost of one little can of primer, why not?

every plumbing set up i've seen in the last year had that on it. When Mel did my plumbing i was reading the container and from what it says, it really does PRIME that PVC for the adhesive. I don't think i'd take a chance and not use it.

reasons for my thread here:

I've done plenty of PVC plumbing jobs without the primer and they turned out just fine. I don't have primer on hand but I guess I'll go pick some up now.
